I still can't get over the fact that The Blossoms sang background on Doris Day's Move Over, Darling. Darlene has truly sung on some iconic and timeless songs.

The Blossoms could sound any way the needed. They’re the angelic backup to “Johnny Angel.”

I disagree with her about The Blossoms singles. I was interested in them as I loved most of the girl groups back then, but the Blossoms singles were too generic sounding and the arrangements were not very catchy. The vocals were beyond reproach, but a hit takes more than great vocals. The Supremes had no luck with cute, sweet little songs like "Breath Taking Guy" but once they knocked your ears off with those hand-claps (wooden rail-clacking in actuality) you HAD to listen. My response to "Where Did Our Love Go" was immediate; I HAD to have it! But Darlene Love got me with other hits like "He's a Rebel" (a powerful lead vocal) , "He's Sure the Boy I Love", "Not Too Young to Get Married" etc, and her excellent Christmas song. It was the mad genius Spector who seemed to capture her best qualities as a vocalist. Amazing that no producer succeeded in capturing her magic on a smash album, but they couldn't quite capture Martha Reeves either on her solo album on MCA. I probably bought several singles that Darlene sang uncredited lead vocal on. She was an in demand studio vocalist in that era and remains a national treasure.

Did the Blossoms sing back up for Jackie Deshannon, on What the World Needs Now?
I always wished I could have heard them more on that record; they were perfect ❤️.

But how did the crystals and supreme seem to cross over

Berry Gordy did not want any music sounding too black. No music sounding to much like jazz, blues or gospel. He was trying crossover. He didn't want music that was too political. Motown's heyday was in the 60s during the civil rights movement. The Supremes original lead singer was Florence Ballard and not Diana Ross. Florence sounded more like Darlene Love. The Crystals and Supremes had a pop sound. That's why they crossed over.
