  • Today I am delighted to be installing a small wildlife pond to our garden and here is a link to a preformed pond on Amazon UK which is the sane as the one we bought at our local garden centre:
    amzn.eu/d/92ND1iU
    The plants we chose for our wildlife pond are:
    Annuals:
    Water Lettuce
    Perennials:
    Nymphaea Aurora (Water Lily)
    Houttuynua Cordata Plena (Orange Peel Plant)
    Phalarus Arundinacea var. Picta (Gardener’s Garter)
    Evergreens:
    Equisetum Hyemale (Dutch Rush)
    Scirpus Cernuus (Fibre Optic Plant)
    Oxygenating Pond Weed
    I’m very much hoping we will have frogs 🐸 sometime in the future 😊

    I had no idea how to make a pond. It’s very pretty. We have a little solar fountain, we got at the thrift store. We have it in a salad bowl, and when it’s sunny it squirts really high. It would look good in a pond. The only problem is on a windy day we lose all the water. Love your garden.

      Hello Nancy, thanks for joining me today. I had no idea how to do it either so I had to watch loads of videos from other TH-camrs 😂 I have been thinking about a little solar pump or air stone, trying to find out more about that, there are lots on Amazon and they aren’t that expensive. It’s been fun doing this. Have a happy week 🩵💜

      Start with something small. Maybe an old container or piece of pottery such as a large bowl or old sink.. you can seal the opening. You don’t even have to put it all in the ground. Use some rocks or large gravel around it. Then put a small aquatic plant such as the lettuce plant and add decorative pieces as Janette has done. Maybe a broken flower pot for a 🐸 to live in.

    Bravo Janette, we visited Chelsea spectacular as ever but disappointing British weather.☔ Love the wildlife pond we put one in, a similar size about 3 years ago in lockdown, it is visited by lots of insects, frogs and birds, it got stinky so we put in a air stone to get oxygen in and also some aquatic snails 🐌that eat the algae. It looks brilliant you've done a fabulous job. Thank you for sharing,🐞🌻🌱

      Hello there Jane and thank you! I was thinking of adding some snails to help keep it clean so thanks for that great tip. I’m not familiar with air stones (I’m not familiar with any of this 😂) so I’ll look that up. Do you need electricity though? That would be difficult but I’ll have a look. I’m so encouraged that yours has done so well and you have frogs 🐸 which is my main aim. Thanks Jane 😊🩵

    Great job Janette. I hope it won't be too long until the wildlife come to their new home. I think it was on Gardeners' World that I saw a man sink an old mug in the ground then filled it with water and he said that every bit of water helps. I have a frog in my garden that makes me jump when I'm doing the watering. I didn't realise that pond plants were so expensive but I love that lily. Take care and have a great week.

    Hi Janette, I made a wildlife pond in our garden back in March. I was fortunate because there was already a hole. This was because the previous people had a water feature with a large pot and underneath was a hole with a large plastic container which, held the water and pump. I was pleased not to have to dig because parts of the garden is clay. The water feature didn't work so I was simply going to take the whole thing out, then I suddenly thought that I might as well make use of the container and hole. I bought a few plants oxygenating like yours a mini waterlily (which is a similar price) and a iris. My Richard keeps looking for frogs, but none have found the pond yet. Janette once again a job well done 👏 😊😊😊

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh what a great idea to recreate the hole into a wildlife pond. I think we are going to have to exercise some patience with our new ponds and let nature take its course. But you might get frogs yet because apparantly they go searching for new ponds around the end of June. You must let me know if you do!! Hope you’re having a great week Pauline 💜🩵

    Beautiful job! Looks nice! We have 2 fairly large ponds in our Illinois garden. I'm thinking that if you saw what looked like a frog in your garden last year it could have been a toad. Toads usually sit in the vegetation waiting for bugs to come along, whereas frogs usually sit in the water as their skin can't dry out. I looked into my rhubarb patch last week and was surprised to see a toad hiding there 😳🤣

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener

    Good morning Janette, Richard and Lotte
    Your pond is fabulous. Definitely frogs will eat your snails/slugs. Although i am no officianado on anything,they do say animals like a bit of green to aid their digestion. Maybe try her on a bit of lettuce,endive etc. Like cats like cat grass,i guess. My neighbours cat did start to chew a plant of mine with spikey leaves and couldn't leave it alone. It came to no harm because i believe they eat just what they need. After all, Lotte does not chew on any other of your plants😂😂I love your choice of pond plants. Will be eager to see how it develops. Janette, you are absolutely adorable in your hat. So cute. One of the most important things in adding a wildlife pond is the liner. Y’all choose a perfect size, especially the depth. Great choice of plants as well. I’ve built five and I have loved each one. Yours is great especially for little insects, they have great places to rest will visiting.. I love that Richard added the snail. It’s so cute. Y’all did an exceptional job with the build. Your garden is so beautiful and impressive. It has every element that makes a perfect haven for y’all and the wildlife. 🐝🐌🦔🐸🦟🦗You and Richard could create a beautiful Chelsea display.
    I wish mine was already established. Building from scratch last year was rough and I’ve added a large area for my cottage garden room this year. But it’s been fun designing. My daughter is ready for me to stop moving my pots around 😂but it’s getting them in the perfect spot that’s important. Oh, she got me a small tiller! I’m so excited. It works great for what I need it for.
    This video has truly been a delight to watch. I can’t wait for the reveal of the finished project. Just a suggestion but maybe ask a neighbor to donate a frog from their yard. @@TheEnthusiasticGardener it’s probably a little too small long term for goldfish as they get quite big. They also produce a lot of waste so work better with a filter. @steviesfishandplants thanks Stevie, that’s just what we thought - too small. I’d hate to have distressed or stunted fish. I did look up very small fish and I’ve watched videos about white cloud minnows but I don’t want to have to bring them inside for the winter so it’s going to have to be a no fish pond here. Will do we are across the pond in North Coast of N Ireland. Frogs are as scarce as hen's teeth over here I reckon St Patrick must have driven them out with the snakes. Your gdn is amazing Chelsea gdn standard in my humble opinion.👍

    Lovely video Jeanette, so relaxing to watch as you do everything so carefully. Your wildlife pond looks so attractive. Hope the zinnias are doing well too, from my packet of 40 seeds 75 came up 😂. l have just potted on 4 large pots of them for the family , (hope they like Zinnias😉) and still have masses left for the garden !!

      Hi there Chris and thank you! I had so much fun doing my wildlife pond and I’ve started on the plants around it. But the zinnias are not such a success story I’m afraid. Sounds like you’ve had far more success than me. Nothing at all in the pot on the left, I do have seedlings in the right one though. But I had 2 packs of seeds and I think I have maybe 10 seedlings 🌱 never mind, I will nurture those!! Hope you’re having a great start to your week 💜🐸

    I did love the themes especially the woodlands for the Chelsea Flower show! This is my favorite show every year. I’ll be rewatching ❤ I thought of you when I saw the woodland displays. I’d so love to go. 🐝🦔🐌🍄 I do love my woodland ponds. I’ve got to redo them somewhat. They are surrounded but absolutely gorgeous mushrooms of all kinds including red. 💚❤️💜

      I loved the woodland gardens too, well I loved most of them!! We have Hampton Court Flower Show coming up next. I love watching both because of course they are 6 weeks or so apart so you get to see gardens with different plants in. Hope you’re having a great week 💜🤩

      @@TheEnthusiasticGardener Thank you. Looks like continuing rain and thunderstorms. ⛈️ I have pots that are just waterlogged and they have proper drainage but absolutely no sun. My yard is woodsy so I can’t really plop them in the ground… I am gonna till up some areas for wildflowers but beyond that there is no more space with sunlight. Is the Hampton Court Flower Show available to watch in the U.S. during the event? I guess I could google that lol but I’m with you on “most” woodlands, there were a couple I was not crazy about. But I definitely love the theme of it. 💚☺️

    One bullfrog came to our pond the day after we put it in but a raccoon came and ate him. Other frogs I put in it were eaten by birds, so I gave up. Here in California.

    Hello Janette! How adorable! I love your new pond. Do you have to worry about algae building up or do the plants help prevent it? I hope you see some frogs soon. If I were a frog I would like to live there 😂. Will all the plants minus the lettuce over winter in it? I’m sure you have it all figured out. Enjoy! 💕💕

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Lauren and thank you!! I don’t know if all the plants will stop the algae or not. In fact today I went and bought 3 more bunches of oxygenates just to be on the safe side. I might look into buying some pond snails which are supposed to keep your pond clean (who would have thought I’d actually be purposely adding snails 🐌 into my garden 😂) but I don’t really want to add a pump as (a) we have no electric there (although there are solar versions) and (b) apparently frogs prefer still water. So I’ll have to see. But I think the plants will overwinter in the pond. Thanks for watching - hope you’re having a great week 🩵💜

    I love you new pond! How many litters is it? Do you have a local pond you can get some water from to add to it? The pond water could have frog eggs in it.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there Therese. Thank you! It’s only 50 litres which is about 11 gallons, I forgot to say! I did suggest to Richard that I go and collect a jar of silt and water from our local park’s pond but he said best not to, you don’t know if you’re bringing in something harmful? He said I need to have patience 😂 he’s probably right. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great week 🐸💜

    In my tropical climate, this pond would require constant cleaning bc of the rabbits and birds using it. Hopefully, you will not encounter any trouble like this. We have an explosion of wild rabbits, that even the red hawks can't keep up with. 🧐🐇
