  • Welcome back to my garden and today I am planting the landscape around the pond which I installed last week.
    Most of the plants I have relocated from other areas of my garden and these are:
    NANDINA
    Ilex Crenata
    Acer Palmatum Little Princess
    Picea PUNGENS Superblue Seedling
    Carex
    Sedge
    I also couldn’t resist adding some extra adornments so have been doing some online shopping and found the following:
    FROM AMAZON UK:
    Flexible Wooden Bridge:
    Trixie Natural Living Brücke, 28... www.amazon.co....
    Resin Bridge:
    Classic Pet Products Wooden... www.amazon.co....
    FROM EBAY:
    Frog House Shelter:
    GECKO REPTILE LIZARD RUGGED STONE CAVE COVER HIDE OUT VIVARIUM BOWL from a shop called “thfishroom”
    Frog Log Shelter:
    Aquatic Aquarium Fish Tank Ornament Long 30cm Fish Tunnel New from a shop on EBay called “TATradingDerby”
    I’ve had so much fun putting this all together and now waiting for some wildlife to come over and join me!
    I hope this has inspired you to add a wildlife pond in your garden.

    Hi Janette. Well it does not get any better than that. I love it all. We often forget to shop our own garden. The trimming and snipping, perfect. Love the extra little rock pool. I'm sure the insects will love having a drink in it's shallow depths. And all the little homes for frogs to rest in when they are not swimming. This was such a fun make over, thank you 🧑‍🌾🪴 x

    Hello there Janette You have thought of every thing to put around your water pond . It looks grand. Idid some gardening this afternoon the weather here was perfect, . I transplanted a kangaroo paw more to the front of my garden so it can be seen more. And I divided a begonia that was in a hanging basket. I got about six new plants out of that I think we both did well. Happy gardening And your dear Richard is so cheeky

    Hi Janette, I've been looking forward to this video all week. I have a suggestion, place some pea gravel on the exposed dirt to keep mud from making a mess when it rains. The planting looks great. The froggies are going to be living in luxury when they move in. 🐸

    I used to have a terrible problem with string algae forming on the rocks in my pond. This year, however, I put a coil of copper tubing in the pond and so far no string algae has formed. I always hated to use aquatic pesticides.

      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Marilyn that is an excellent tip, thank you! Do you have fish in your pond though because I think it could be harmful to them? Not that I’m going to have fish as my pond is too small for that but I just wondered. I will definitely have a Google and fingers crossed this is an excellent solution so thank you! Wow! It all looks so lovely! And what a bargain with the tree topiarised by your own good self! You could anchor the larger bridge with a couple of the old metal type tent pegs? I was worried about too much shade and leaves falling in the pond, but you altered that before I jumped in with a comment without waiting until the end. It all blends so well already! And, apples on the apple tree! Also, I like your top ! We send our snails on holiday in the brown bins with a picnic for the journey!

  • @ukaly1
    @ukaly1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The deafening noise that you may hear not only at night but also in the daytime is not from frogs but toads. We have two large ponds in our garden and it's the toads that you hear in the spring at mating time...not all year. Also frogs stay in the water most of the time except for hunting for food as their skin has to remain wet, but toads live mostly out of the water and will use your hiding spots. They find the water for laying their eggs after that deafening sound 😂 Nice job on your pond.

    Hi Janette, Wildlife Pond looks wonderful! So lucky that you thought of the Japanese Maple leaves falling. It must have been hard to walk away from the standard conifer at the garden centre and how lucky you did. Little Superblue was a great find. I love all the special adornments. You've thought of everything to make those lucky little frogs as comfortable as they could be. Hope you don't have to wait long for your first guests to move in. Richard's appearances are always fun and put a smile on my face. Very cold here this week, only 16 degrees today, might not seem so bad to you but I think I'm freezing. Love it! We have an area in our "woodland" back yard that I've thought about putting a small water feature in as well. You've given me some ideas! My only concern is having a mosquito haven if not enough wildlife were to come to control it and I don't want to do Koi. We get a lot of mosquitoes and could keep some under control with the tabs you put in the water, but I would for sure need some frogs to immediately come to eat mosquito larvae.

    • @christinaruns
      @christinaruns 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Jeanette you have excelled yourself once again. !!!Have really enjoyed the pond videos - some good tips. You have a remarkable eye for making lovely plants even more beautiful. You always know what works but you are quite happy to share having ‘after thoughts’ as with the acer. Good thinking 🤔. We have a very small pond with frogs. What still takes me by surprise is when they jump out when I’m gardening!!! My sister’s mother-in-law had a beautiful large pond made & actually bought a box of frogs & released them next to the pond. They all hopped away & never went near the pond😂😂. Thanks again for everything. Richard was pushing for an Oscar with his performance!! The nandina looks beautiful. Great idea placing it near the pond as it seems to be a snail habitat. I don't think I've ever seen anyone shape it like you have. I can see your enthusiasm for all those pond extras which will surely lure in the frogs. Love the lamium too. I so enjoy watching your vlogs. Bought a golden spirit smoke bush. Such a lovely colour. Otherwise no major purchases,just pruning the excess growth on larger shrubs. Any more heavy rain and I'll have a rain forest😂 Love to Lotte who seems to be in a very contemplative mood. I called Rich out to look because I saw 2 very tiny ‘things’ swimming in there, but he suspects they are mosquito larvae 🤣 so typical, I am breeding mosquitos 🦟 🤣 but I am waiting for another Nature and hopefully when the weather warms up it will start coming to life. Hi Janette, I always love that you don't mind moving plants about and pruning plants into new shapes. I think that the Nandina looks fantastic. That blue evergreen lollipop tree did look nice, but I wouldn't have paid out £160 either. We all have our limits. 😮 The blue tree that you have pruned does the job. Hello there Pauline ☺️ today is my birthday 🤩 thank you for remembering 🥰 yes, try as I might I always neglect to check mature sizes of my plants and so they have to move, but I’m trying to be better about that. I liked how the nandina turned out, it was a bit of a gamble! The blue lollipop was so overpriced wasn’t it, I’m so glad I saw sense and put it back. Hello Janette, I was waiting for this vlog for a week now🥳. Great idea to limb up the nandina, that way the spruce will have more room. It’s funny how we don’t really consider spacing when we plant, and when we do it’s never enough. While doing yard work yesterday I noticed a lot of my shrubs and bushes got way bigger than what their tag stated and that means they are happy but we had to do a lot of pruning. Same with the roses. I definitely think adding pea gravel will help with soil erosion around the pond. Everything is looking so woodsy, the frogs are going to be in a 5 star hotel😂🐸. Love all that you’ve accomplished my friend 🫶.

      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Elizabeth, so glad you like it!! You’re right about us planting too close without thinking of mature sizes, and I’m always guilty of doing that. I do have more gravel so could add some round the edges too, good idea. Hope you have a very wonderful week 🐸💜

    I absolutely agree with you about supporting nurseries as against Garden Centres. Whenever possible I go to nurseries. Usually I only look at the “out of season”/half price” section of garden centres. Even then, the prices are often too high.
    Yesterday I went to Leonadslee Gardens in West Sussex - my daughter was running in the 10K race and we were looking after the grandchildren. On the way out I looked in their plant sales area. Given the fame and importance of the garden, both the range and condition of the plants was very poor. Even though there was someone with a hose, the plants were bone dry and the Rhododendrons and Camellias were all drooping, so I didn’t buy anything even though there were a couple of Rhododendrons I would have bought had they been looking even half decent. The garden itself was superb, even though most of the spring flowering shrubs were over.
    Your pond is looking wonderful, but don’t be disappointed if the frogs take a while. I have a wildlife pond that has been in for over 10 years, loads of Palmate Newts but never a frog, even though I see them in the garden almost every year, ditto toads.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Goodness me, 10 years and still waiting for frogs 🐸🤣 but I’m just joking about all the frogs coming, i will just Mother Nature do her thing and what will be, will be 🤩 I so agree about some of the plants in garden centres being less than desirable and dried out. Also I never buy from my local Tesco, they wheel their racks in and out each day but the poor plants always seem to be in such a sorry state. Hope you had a great weekend and a good start to the week and thank you for always watching and being such a great support 🎈💜🐸😃

      Hello Sara and thank you and so pleased you’re going to have a pond too. The Carexes don’t self seed but they do grow little offshoot plants around the edges, I call them pups, and you can dig those up carefully getting some root with them and transplant those. All the ones I planted here were little pups from other plants so they were all freebies!! Have a lovely day and good luck with your pond. I think the ladders come in different lengths and widths too if I remember correctly. There is more than one shop selling them on Amazon so you can compare. 🐸💜

      Hello Sheila and hello to your little grandson too! Oh that will be fun for him to do with you. I got the snail from my local garden centre, not Amazon unfortunately or I could have shared a link with you. It’s been a whole lot of fun 🤩 have a lovely day 💜🐸

      Hi Kate, I’ve had those a long time, I bought them at a craft Fayre, they are carved out of wood and I painted the stems grey and varnished them in one of my very first videos (don’t watch it 🤣). Pretty aren’t they? 💜🍄

      Let me know if that link doesn’t work. They have so many beautiful plants, shrubs and trees etc and are so helpful. Have a great day 💜

    How do the birds have a bath with the stones in the water? Try putting them round the pond to hid the plastic. 🤗😘

      Gillian you read my mind because after I filmed I thought the same and removed a couple of the stones. I’m hoping the grasses will fill around the edges of the pond a bit more too. I didn’t really want a lot of stones around the edges (as I’ll have to go and buy them and they’re quite expensive) but I may change my mind about that. Thanks so much for watching 🥰

    Wow, that blue spruce was way overpriced and like you, I never would have paid that price which means it would cost even more American. The one you got was a good buy for sure. Now, are you going to put a few gold fish in your pond? Can you buy live frogs from your local pet store to put in the pond? Just wondering.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know! I had a moment of madness but thankfully came to my senses and put it back. Honestly I never spend that much on a plant! No fish unfortunately, it’s far too small for fish. I’ve asked quite a few experts if I can and it’s a flat no. Plus fish would eat the frogspawn etc. I know it’s illegal to capture wild frogs here but I don’t know if you can buy them? But I’ll wait to see what happens naturally. Have a happy day 🤩🐸

    • @silverdawnintx
      @silverdawnintx 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheEnthusiasticGardener OK, no fish but you could always buy a fake frog or two to put in the pond, maybe sitting on a log if no frogs show up. If you add some big rocks on top of the black edge of the pond it would look even better. Also, I would not be surprised if down the road you decide to add another small pond with maybe a pump added this time. The only "pond" I have is a large metal tub I filled with water and fake aquarium plants and a floating fake lotus. Works for me.
