This looks fantastic, but I highly recommend adding some MUCH smaller perches. Chondros prefer horizontal perches that are considerably smaller than their own girth.

Just some advice, if youre using stuff from your house, i.e tree branches, leaves, and dirt, you have to make sure to bake it in your over. Or boil it. That ensure it kills any mites that hide there or any other parasite that could harm your snake. However ik that boiling your dirt sounds dumb but baking it could help most.

The people on the big Facebook bioactive group reckon that the natural microfauna is useful to helping establish a natural ecosystem in the vivarium and therefore advise against sterilizing the media before bringing it into the tank in most cases. I appreciate your feedback though, the way you described is definitely the safest and most cautious way to go.
the microfauna can be VERY beneficial, and that's why after boiling/baking anything i collect from the local streams/woods, i will always add in some captive raised woodlice and springtails. That way the bioactivity can still continue but i'm sure that everything is disease free and safe for my tank. I house tree frogs and dart frogs in various setups and i've never had any issues with them!

would Drylock work to create a little pond area? It is waterproof so I think I can just build up a little 2x2 inch wall that has a bit of water in it for a terrarium. Do you think this would work? I have a paladarium with a waterfall and I think it would be cool for the waterfall to go into a little pond before it hits the main part. Any reply would help, thanks

excellent build, though the only thing i would have done differently was NOT securing the perches in place, after owning both etbs and gtps for a number of years you will realize that moving the snakes around from time to time is much easier when you can just take the whole perch off rather than spending a while coaxing the animal off

This is amazing mate, one question I have with all of these type of tanks, is how do you cleanse it properly if all the coconut stuff is glued into it? Can it be cleaned or does it eventually stink no matter what u do, or is it fine?
The idea with bioactive is that it is alive, like a forest. The small bugs and microbes help to break things down. You create an ecosystem that is balanced so that the waste from the one organism is food for the rest. The snake poops, the insects and bacteria breaks it up. And their poop will go into the soil and the plants use it to grow. If everything is work well the maintenance should only be to trim the plants. Although the water might need changing every 6 months to a year as it is a bit trickier to get that balanced too, but even that is possible.
It is bioactive. So you don't really clean it. Once every 6 months or so I do a water change. Occasionally I have to cut the plants back, but that's it.
exo terra medium or med extra tall, would totally not be big enough for a 6 foot adult tree python.... the second terrarium is a much better size but still may seem to be cramped for a full grown 6 foot 4 inch thick python..JS..... but you are on the right track.. AND THE FINISH PRODUCT LOOKS EXCELLENT KODOS! just started my own arboreal snake paludarium. I went with Carolina Custom Cages for a nice tall column for the snake to have more vertical space to move up and down for the illusion of more canopy and space. nice build.
When handling silicon, use a cup of water and some mild soap in. Dip your fingers in it, the silicon will be easy to handle and it will not stick to your skin.

I love the build but you are definitely excessive on the silicone. Most of it will be concealed but I would recommend using less for when you have to use some in a visible spot. Great build and I know he's gonna love it.
I love this. I keep poison dart frogs in a bioactive tank like this. Dont see too many green tree python tanks done this way though, but it looks so much better.
If I could make one suggestion for separating the pond section from the substrate area. If you take a piece of plexiglass and cut it to go across the depth of the tank right where you want to separate the two sections. You could use the silicone to glue it to the sides. You were on the right track with the silicon but the foam was just too porous

Love the setup, but personally i would have used at least 1 thinner horizontal branch. In my experience they like those a bit more than the thikker ones. But overall very awesome enclosure for one lucky green tree python ;)
This build looks AMAZING I love the design! There are two ways you could have approached the water and land differently. You could have used egg crate to elevate a land portion or just simply divided the two sections with some hard see-through plastic and Aquarium silicone. But overall very beautiful! I love the island idea
Expanding foam...FLOATS. This means that the minute you add water, the foam will want to rise. That pressure will slowly {slowly if you are lucky and didn't use a lot of water}work against you. One day...POP...up it will shoot. Using fiberglass as a shell, would be much better...in spite of what it may take, it is not hard to learn...although it is messy.
Nothing personal...I like what you did. I have been on the wrong side of this, that's how I know...it was a MAJOR DISASTER...haha! I def learned the hard way.

I cheated by cutting some holes in the barrier, forcing the water to circulate through both sides. It is perfect now. I don't need to drain anything. Very low maintenance.
I'm curious how this went, now two years later. I've considered building a palludarium with fish for a gtp, but I'm concerned that one snake poop in the water will destroy the chemistry and kill the fish before I can get it cleaned up...
It went well. I didn't manage to keep the fish alive, but the snake was really healthy. Maybe you are right about the fish and toxicity. Maybe that can be overcome with more filtration and more plants

I sold it a year ago and moved to Canada. But that enclosure worked really well for more than a year that I had it and I assume it is working for the guy who bought it too. He got the snake and enclosure together.

I actually have dart frogs in there with the snake. It is very controversial, but they leave each other alone. So, yes. It would work well for dart frogs. Some people shy away from deep water for dart frogs, bit mine have been fine for almost a year. The plants? 2 types of ficus vines. Bromeliads, some ferns, 2 types of begonia. I also got some cuttings of something with my dart frogs that I planted and has grown like mad. Not sure what that is.
I used a normal aquarium submersible pump. After I modified it to run through the clay pebbles it was really clean by the time it got to the pump and it didn't need cleaning.
I didn't. There are 2 schools of thought with bioactive setups. The one is only introduce the bugs and bacteria that I want and hope it is the right ones. The other is take from an already established ecosystem, where things are already balanced. The latter has the risk of potentially introducing something nasty by mistake. The former has the risk that the ecosystem could crash really easily or a single microbe could take over which could be bad for the animals, because there wasn't an equilibrium established.

I gave it a week. Some wait longer. The best resource I found was the Facebook bioactive group, that has thousands of people and some documents for you to download and read. That's where I learned from.
This is so cool, can't wait till I have more space to do this for all my snakes, currently only my tiny colubrids and geckos are in vivariums. How many cans of spray foam and silicone this this take? I did a 55 gallon tank for my crested gecko with this technique and I think I blasted through 6 cans of spray foam and 3 tubes of silicone
+Sticky Feets I ended up using about 5 cans of expanding foam and about 8 silicone tubes. I used loads of silicone because of all the rocks and the pond part, trying to get it waterproof. I could have used less expanding foam if I did smaller layers that didn't have to be cut back as much, but all the silicone was necessary.
I'm new to this and considering a new build for my 12 year old gtp. What is the maintenance like? My set up now requires a whole tank rehab every few months. Completely removing water falls, branches ect. Washing them down. Replacement of substrates and then another complete rebuild. Will building a bioactive reduce this maintenance on constant overhaul? Thanks.
+unknown wolf, Green Tree Pythons are awesome. They are tricky to get set up correctly, butbifnyoubget that right, they are easy to look after. I wouldn't recommend them as a first snake, bitbfornan experienced keeper, definitely.
+unknown wolf nice. Do it. Once the environment is still up correctly, they are really low maintenance. I would recommend Justin Julander's book "Green Tree Pythons: Natural History and Captive Maintenance". It is modern and updated with scientific evidence on how to keep them properly. Basically to not keep them too fat, wet and hot. Very good book. Highly recommended.
Green tree pythons are really awesome animals as long as you're not looking for a snake that can typically be handled well and as long as you've put a lot of research into them like you should any pet. They are more sensitive to humidity that most other snakes so you really have to make sure the humidity is good but other than that they're amazing pets.
I ended up moving country and had to sell the snake and the setup. It worked well though and the snake was happy and healthy when it went to its new owner.
+Keegan Human I live in the UK. So I got them from eBay. Not sure where you could get them in SA. I think I remember seeing both in rotten logs etc while snake catching in SA. Sorry. If I hear of anyone keeping any in SA I will try get back in contact with you, with the details.
+Edward Sandberg the beauty of bioactive setups is not really needing to clean it. I haven't cleaned it out since I made it about 7 months ago. Since it is bioactive, I put additional bugs in, so I wasn't phased about external bugs getting in.
Jayd Lawrence putting in specific arthropods to create a bioactive setup is quite different from introducing unwanted organisms such as mites, which can harm and potentially kill some reptiles. If you do get a mite infestation, you’re going to have a nightmare getting rid of them, and they can and will spread to any other animals you might keep.
@@hjonccers783 on the plus side, even though the numbers are a bit bigger in USD, converted, most things will be cheaper. And it is a lot easier to source a lot of the things for this build on the USA
Jayd Lawrence I tried to separate the water feature from the land portion the same way you did. After the leakage I had to drastically change my idea. However there are a few differences in my viv from yours. I do not have a water fall and my animal is a semi aquatic frog. I made the entire bottom portion of the enclosure the water section with large ledges protruding from the background with spray foam. I’m very happy with the way it turned out the only problem is the only spots to plant plants are the pots I spray-foamed into the background and by allowing plants to root into the wood I have.

Yes. If you check out my Instagram I have a short video of a frog getting right in front of the python's nose and the python actively pulls back from it. But if you put a mouse in there, it had one of the strongest feeding responses ever.

It is usually referred to as "expanding foam" here in the UK. Its full name is "expanding polyurethane foam". The main brand it is known by in the US is "great stuff". They are all the same stuff. On a quick Google, it looks like you can get them online at £3.24 for a 750ml can.

You can use a plastic storage bin as a waterproof pond liner and build up the foam around and in it to hide it.

you could cut the storage bin off on the front side and silicone if thoroughly and then hide with foam/rocks! Would look pretty natural!

I have heard that it is tough for the bigger snakes.
I would still go bioactive and of the poop builds up, you can take out the excess.
I have my boa in bio I do spot clean poop but just give him lots of branches and stuff to distribute weight on

From 1-10 I'd give it a 67
Leaf litter from the woods is loaded with parasites/ pests. Mites!

So, yes. It would work well for dart frogs. Some people shy away from deep water for dart frogs, bit mine have been fine for almost a year.
The plants?
2 types of ficus vines. Bromeliads, some ferns, 2 types of begonia. I also got some cuttings of something with my dart frogs that I planted and has grown like mad. Not sure what that is.

What did you use as the pump for the waterfall? Also is there anyway to easily clean it?
I used a normal aquarium submersible pump. After I modified it to run through the clay pebbles it was really clean by the time it got to the pump and it didn't need cleaning.

I didn't. There are 2 schools of thought with bioactive setups. The one is only introduce the bugs and bacteria that I want and hope it is the right ones. The other is take from an already established ecosystem, where things are already balanced. The latter has the risk of potentially introducing something nasty by mistake. The former has the risk that the ecosystem could crash really easily or a single microbe could take over which could be bad for the animals, because there wasn't an equilibrium established.

I gave it a week. Some wait longer.
The best resource I found was the Facebook bioactive group, that has thousands of people and some documents for you to download and read. That's where I learned from.

Yes. After they dry and the small is gone, they are fine.

Cheap eBay versions of the jungle dawns. If you search for "horizontal corn led bulb" you should find them.
This is so cool, can't wait till I have more space to do this for all my snakes, currently only my tiny colubrids and geckos are in vivariums. How many cans of spray foam and silicone this this take? I did a 55 gallon tank for my crested gecko with this technique and I think I blasted through 6 cans of spray foam and 3 tubes of silicone
+Sticky Feets I ended up using about 5 cans of expanding foam and about 8 silicone tubes. I used loads of silicone because of all the rocks and the pond part, trying to get it waterproof. I could have used less expanding foam if I did smaller layers that didn't have to be cut back as much, but all the silicone was necessary.

I'm new to this and considering a new build for my 12 year old gtp. What is the maintenance like? My set up now requires a whole tank rehab every few months. Completely removing water falls, branches ect. Washing them down. Replacement of substrates and then another complete rebuild. Will building a bioactive reduce this maintenance on constant overhaul? Thanks.
I basically left it. I trimmed some plants once a year and did a water change every 4 months or so. That's it.
I tried to build it with low maintenance as the goal.
how did you stop the water from leaking in to the other side?
+Kali Kaiju essentially I didn't. I gave up and cut a massive hole in the barrier, forcing the water to circulate through both sides.

+unknown wolf, Green Tree Pythons are awesome. They are tricky to get set up correctly, butbifnyoubget that right, they are easy to look after. I wouldn't recommend them as a first snake, bitbfornan experienced keeper, definitely.

+unknown wolf nice. Do it. Once the environment is still up correctly, they are really low maintenance. I would recommend Justin Julander's book "Green Tree Pythons: Natural History and Captive Maintenance". It is modern and updated with scientific evidence on how to keep them properly. Basically to not keep them too fat, wet and hot. Very good book. Highly recommended.
Green tree pythons are really awesome animals as long as you're not looking for a snake that can typically be handled well and as long as you've put a lot of research into them like you should any pet. They are more sensitive to humidity that most other snakes so you really have to make sure the humidity is good but other than that they're amazing pets.

I busted through and made the water flow through that side and then back to the pump.

+Edward Sandberg the beauty of bioactive setups is not really needing to clean it. I haven't cleaned it out since I made it about 7 months ago. Since it is bioactive, I put additional bugs in, so I wasn't phased about external bugs getting in.
Jayd Lawrence putting in specific arthropods to create a bioactive setup is quite different from introducing unwanted organisms such as mites, which can harm and potentially kill some reptiles. If you do get a mite infestation, you’re going to have a nightmare getting rid of them, and they can and will spread to any other animals you might keep.

Jayd Lawrence I tried to separate the water feature from the land portion the same way you did. After the leakage I had to drastically change my idea. However there are a few differences in my viv from yours. I do not have a water fall and my animal is a semi aquatic frog. I made the entire bottom portion of the enclosure the water section with large ledges protruding from the background with spray foam. I’m very happy with the way it turned out the only problem is the only spots to plant plants are the pots I spray-foamed into the background and by allowing plants to root into the wood I have.

Pretty plants, arts n'craft rock chips and silicone, and bugs in the substrate dont make up for solid snake keeping knowledge.

Yes. If you check out my Instagram I have a short video of a frog getting right in front of the python's nose and the python actively pulls back from it.
But if you put a mouse in there, it had one of the strongest feeding responses ever.

It is usually referred to as "expanding foam" here in the UK. Its full name is "expanding polyurethane foam". The main brand it is known by in the US is "great stuff". They are all the same stuff. On a quick Google, it looks like you can get them online at £3.24 for a 750ml can.
