The story of Snow White has existed for hundreds of years and in each iteration, there has been a variety of dwarfs! The 1912 play featured the likes of Blick, Flick and Glick while Mr. Magoo’s Little Snow White contained the dwarfs Axlerod, Bartholomew and Cornelius, but no other story has a character like Dopey. You know what’s weird though? Why doesn’t Dopey speak? Can he just not speak? Is he a selective mute? Or is there some other deeper reason?

Wotso Videos am I the only one who thought dopey was a “special kid” when I was little? I thought he had Down syndrome
I thought Dopey had some form of disorder as well. Because his behaviour seemed so acceptable to the other dwarves as if it was a part of who he was. Not some kind of traumatic experience or a result of a terrible accident. This was Dopey and they respected that. Thanks for discussing this topic Issac. Can't wait to see hat comes next week.
queendsheena1 to be honest, I did too. Thinking maybe he had just some mental illness and with it being centered for kids, they wouldn't imply anything like that. But it would make sense if it's just more of a choice to speak like not wanted to speak over all or maybe some traumatic experience to cause him to say anything.
queendsheena1 I thought he was deaf or near it. My reason being was that he could hear but not very good so instead of talking and misunderstanding he stays quiet so he can hear everything
That was my guess as well; I had a friend in high school who barely spoke, he only said yes or no in a raspy whisper.

Consider this though, Isaac. Dopey is apparently the YOUNGEST of the seven Dwarfs and his actions have always seemed very childlike to me....much more innocent than the other Dwarfs (especially ones like Grumpy who seem to have much more maturity) His incessant desire to receive affection from Snow White for example....when she kisses the Dwarfs goodbye, he keeps coming back for more kisses. When the Dwarfs are mourning over Snow, the others stand in silence weeping and he buries his head in Doc's chest sobbing openly....much like a child would who doesn't understand death. When they are outside washing, the others are doing it correctly and he is playing. What IF Snow White's presumption at the beginning is true? When she finds the Dwarfs cottage, she exclaims over how untidy it is and concludes to the animals "maybe they have no MOTHER" and the animals agree. And then when she offers to be a mother-figure to them, they eagerly agree. And it is no coincidence when the Mermaid gave Dopey a wish, his wish was to speak and his first word to Snow was "Mama". What if, Dopey's mother DID die when he was very young and that's why he's never really learned to speak? Because he was raised by his brothers and never really taught?
CeltycSparrow yeah , I think so ... it’s a good theory ...bus I think his mother died maybe giving birth to him , and it would be alzo a reason why they don’t like women (Grumpy in particular)
I agree....Grumpy does seem to have some very negative opinions about women. The Queen yes, but women in general. They never really say how old they are, but Grumpy strikes me as being the oldest of the 7. And that's why he was initially so opposed to Snow. But then by the end, if you notice, when the animals come to warn them about the Queen attacking Snow, it is Grumpy (NOT Doc, the unspoken leader of the Dwarfs) who really steps up and says "we've got to save her". And other than Dopey, he is one of the only Dwarfs at the wake who turns his head away to weep for her. The others are silently weeping, but he just can't bear it.
Well,in my opinion Grumpy is the third born , in fact his brothers don’t listen to him very much , but yes , he’s the true hero and he needs (with Dopey) considered as Disney Prince (NOT Florian ,who just kissed a 14 year old girl and...KIDNAPPING her ) . And I think that Grumpy is 28or 26 and Dopey is 14or 16 . Anyway ,we need more of them ,we need an origins dwarf movie that talk About the brotherly love between those 7 brothers ,tell me if I’m right

And I do agree with you that an origin movie on the Dwarfs would be cool. We got a tiny little hint of a backstory for Grumpy at least in Once Upon a Time (apparently he was originally named Dreamy and his named changed to Grumpy because a fairy broke his heart.) but I would like to see a more detailed backstory. Who were they? Did they have a mother? Where is there father at and who was he? What happened to them after Snow White left?
Tell me if I’m crazy , because I think...that they are the sons of the...Dwarf King...in my opinion Doc is the first born,Happy the second one,Grumpy the third ,Sneezy ,Sleepy and Bash are a triplet and Dopey is the last born. And an advice : don’t believe in Once Upon A Time because isn’t Disney Cannon . Tell me your thoughts

lyrebird207. In reality, a litter of kittens can have more 1 dad. However, regarding Aristocats Duchess, I think Duchess either had a Black - Furred or Brown - Furred Husband & the other colour came from the grandparents. Duchess' husband may have died in an accident or had walked out.
We see the fathers of the kittens in the movies. When a female cat goes into heat, she'll go outside and howl until all the men come to her, and she doesn't just take one "husband". They're not too picky when they're in heat. We don't know who Marie (the female kitten)'s father is because she looks exactly like the mom, but thomas o malley would likely be the orange kitten's father, and the fat black cat that sings jazz would be the black kitten's father.
lyrebird207. Do you mean Descendants or are you referring to the story 'Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister'? I haven't read the book or seen the movies but I do have a theory regarding both her & Anastasia's personalities. Drizella DEFINITELY takes after her social climbing snobby mother while Anastasia was more in taking after her deceased father, this is clearly shown in the follow - up Cinderella cartoon movies.
I have a son with Angelman Syndrome and I’m obsessed with this theory and Dopey. It’s an extremely rare syndrome that most people (including doctors) have never heard of. So to think that Disney knew what it was and wrote it into one of his movies is very special!

My daughter has Angelman Syndrome, and I agree. His traits seem to match perfectly. My daughter has the desire to speak, and has been able to muster up MaMa and DaDa. She has complex thoughts and we struggle with her frustrations on not being able to talk. I am able to understand from reading the situation and knowing her needs what she would most likely want to communicate. Very similarly to how Dopeys brothers do when they speak for him. Thank you for your theory. You may not know it, but you have brought awareness to our rare syndrome!

Could Mother Gothel be related to Frollo? Think about it: Both Villains keep the main protagonists locked up for many years by convincing them that the world is cruel and dark, they both have the same looking daggers, they both try to kill the protagonist’s friend, and they both fall to their deaths. Pretty interesting huh?
Well, Mother Gothel was already dead before she hit the ground but everything else, you hit the nail on the head.
Alpha I think, maybe not directly related, as the stories are hundreds years apart. So I think maybe they have a shared extended family member
It’s entirely possible that Mother Gothel could’ve had a bloodline (because of the eternal-youth and hundreds-of-years thing), and the geography makes sense. Tangled takes place in the rough vicinity of Germany (since Rapunzel is a German fairy tale) while Claude Frollo is a Catholic church official in France. We can’t use genetics to prove this one, unfortunately, because of Frollo having gray hair.
Connor Plisga. I think they may have been husband & wife at some point. I came up with a descendant's theory for who Frollo's daughter's mother may have been. My money's on her.
Hey don't forget the song "mother knows best" and Frollo's part in "out there" sound oddly similar

Thank you for doing this video! I was pleasantly surprised when you brought up Angelman syndrome. My sister has Angelmans and in all my years I never thought of Dopey also being Autistic but it makes total sense! It's cool to think I have another connection to Snow White now!

Even though he speaks, there's a character in John Steinbeck's Cannery Row (and later, Sweet Thursday), named Hazel who seems almost modeled after Dopey. He's one of Steinbeck's greatest characters, and just super-endearing.

I love this theory, it is very good and it could actually be true, but I think Dopey is more childlike. My theory is that Dopey is actually Japetto from Pinochio as a child, because of the similar nose shapes and face shapes. Dopey acts like a very little child, so he could be a toddler, because of the playful and clumsy way he walks. The dwarves found Dopey/Japetto as a kid they took him in, mistaking him for a dwarf. As he grew up however, Dopey started to feel very different from the dwarves, in his questioning he stumbled opon an old, abondoned house. On the table he saw items , which Dopey/Japetto reconized immediately. He ran to the rest of the dwarves, showing them the items and demanding them for the truth. Doc explained to him that they never knew that he was a human, they found him in the middle of the woods, all alone and thought that he was a fellow dwarf, considering his small size at the time. They decided to give Dopey a choice, he could stay with them or he could leave and start his new life as a human. Japetto chose to start his own life, leaving the dwarves behind.
Wait wait wait, they planned on having his mother killed. And he is a mute. Does anyone else think of poundcake from the 5th wave series when they hear that?
(For those who do not know the 5th wave poundcake is a boy who's brother wandered away while he was looking for food. His mom died from the plague days later. He became mute not wanting to talk about the scarring past)

Honestly, I always saw Dopey as someone who had a submucous cleft palate (something I had but had an operation to get it fixed when I was 4) where your words have a very nasally sound and you slur your words a LOT. And as a result of this, I never/ hardly ever spoke. I had the ability to make vocal sounds (such as scream like Dopey can) but I couldn't actually say words right (just to show how bad it was, i couldn't even say "Mama" properly since it'll always come out "mah ah") so I always thought that dopey had what I had and that's why he didn't speak.
As a kid, i just figured he just consciously chose not to. The rest of the dwarves were on board with it and allowed him to do what he wanted and never forced the subject. They understood him and that was that.
I think your explaination makes more sense though.
The more you think about it with his back ground with his mom... the more tears you get when he calls Snow white "mama"

My theory for why dopey doesn't speak is is because when he was a baby his first word was something so cruel and gruesome that his mother died of a heart attack and his father was already dead and he thought that it was his words that killed her which though technically was true still so he vowed never to speak again and hopes that he will never kill anyone again

I used to be selective mute and it was always super hard to get any words out.- my Grandma once told me a story of when she was little she didn’t really talk. She said that the first time she really expressed her feelings through talking was when she complained about her potato lumps. Her parents asked “why only talk now?” And she said “well, until now everything has been satisfactory.” 🤣 This story always cheered me up and gave me hope to talk in the future. Which I do now!
Also not all selective mutes have all of the symptoms so it could be Dopey has it. I was pretty expressive in my later years because I had things to say and no way to say them ^^”

Mabe ursuala from the little mermaid took his voice or made it limited. She did it to Ariel. Mabe she did a spell on dopey first, but perfected it when she did it again on Ariel. Mabe that made it hard for him to move without talking. Mabe he was also not a big talker as well previously.

Hello Isaac! Thank you so much for sharing this video. Dopey is a character near and dear to my heart. My older brother, Charlie, loves and identifies with Dopey. Charlie has Down syndrome and I remember when we were little he would always wear his Dopey t-shirt. I always assumed Dopey had Down syndrome, largely because of this personal connection. The happiness, smiles, lack of speech, flapping hands and ear shape seemed to confirm that to me. But Angelman's syndrome fits well too. In particular, I might be misremember, but I thought there was a scene in Snow White where all the dwarf walk over a little stream of water and Dopey comes back to look at it. One of the signs of Angelman's syndrome is a fascination with water.
My uncle is autistic and he can't speak, but he can make sounds. He smiles a lot but he isn't clumsy. I figured it could have been that but this other theory sticks as well. I had heard of this syndrome before but I didn't know too much about it but I suppose it fits.
Selective Mutism seems to be more of what Link has than Dopey, after all there has been instances where Link spoke (barring the cartoon, comics, books, manga, and cdi games) but usually the only things that come out of his mouth are vocal utterances; mainly grunts, but Dopey never canonically spoke proper words completely mentally unhindered at all.
Honestly I always saw him as autistic. A lot of his characteristics are super common in autistic people, and it'd also explain why he doesn't talk, as some autistic people are mostly or completely nonverbal, and the levels can vary(for example, I'm usually verbal but in certain situations, usually if I'm extremely stressed, I'll go nonverbal for a while). idk, maybe I'm just self-projecting onto him

I always thought (when I was old enough to understand) that dopy had some type of developmental delay. I used to work with special needs kids. Most of them could not speak, but they made lots of vocal noises. I guess what ever disorder he has, he has high enough function to communicate thoughts with gesters. I also wonder why he is the only one without hair.
I'm slow of speech and hearing I'm in my 30's I saw snow White and the seven Darwhs way back when sorry for any misspells or mistakes in spelling.

John Lasseter after becoming CEO of all Animation Parts of Disney in 2006 insisted DisneyToon Studios who once did Straight-to-Video/DVD Sequels/Prequels/Midquels to these Disney Animated Feature Films to only work on Spinoffs like the Tinker Bell Franchise after the release of The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, which scrapped several films they had in mind, one of which I see being a Prequel to Snow White that’s dedicated to the 7 Dwarves.

In fact, the characteristics of Dopey, like Gideon the Cat of Pinocchio as well, are based on the comedian Harpo Marx - who never spoke on stage or on screen (mute By choice), using only horns and whistling. His style of comedy included pantomime, silliness, and musical mastery. Also, Harpo was very energetic, happy-going and acted with enormous variation of facial expressions.This is, of course, just a external reason.

In the DisneyXD series the 7D, dopey actually does vocalize, but with animals. Also not technically on the subject of dopey, i do recommend checking out the 7D show, it may not be canon but it is a lot of fun
I always thought he had some severe mental disability too, but I wasn't sure what it was until now. This theory that he has angel man syndrome makes perfect sense. With that in mind, it was kind of insensitive to name him Dopey even though I'm sure there wasn't any mean intentions behind it and I suppose there could've been worse names for him. But still, that's just as cringey as naming a big character Fatso. But, this movie was made in 1937 and what was politically correct back then is different than today. Plus, this movie is still a good classic despite that.

Maleficent Forever. Know what you mean there. I saw the movie Maleficent but was rather in 2 minds about it. I liked the idea of Maleficent being a misunderstood character in this version of the Sleeping Beauty Tale, but I was rather affronted by the idea of re - casting King Stefan as the villain. Why not make a new character for the villain role, like an evil sibling (like Lion King's Scar) or a scheming courtier (like Aladdin's Jafar)?

I think the real reason Dopey doesn't speak is the same reason Harpo Marx or Gromit the dog don't speak. They can say everything they need to by facial expression and body language alone, and sight gags are one of the oldest forms of humor.

Angelman Syndrome is an important genetic disorder we learn in medical school, and I'm sure in other healthcare professional schools as well, because of its complex mechanism of inheritance. It's interesting to think about diagnosing animation characters like this, haha! 😊
There is a theory where Dopey is Geppetto from Pinocchio. One day the 6 dwarves were hiking in the woods when they found an abandoned baby (dopey) babies can’t speak and they’re bald just like Dopey. This is why Dopey never tried to talk bc he’s a baby. Also he doesn’t look old like the rest of them he looks like a baby. Since he’s a baby he’s really small so they assumed he was one of them. Babies don’t know much which does kinda make them a little dumb so when the dwarves saw the way he acted they decided to name him Dopey. But he’s actually human so when he grew taller than them they realized he wasn’t one of them so they kicked him out. He was so heartbroken he moved to Italy and changed his name to Geppetto and he had a crush on Snow White soooo bad he wouldn’t go out with anyone else. That’s why Geppetto doesn’t have a wife. But he wanted a son so he made Pinocchio (which looks similar to Snow White) bc he would be the son they never had. Also Geppetto and Dopey both have red noses, big ears, blue eyes, love for animals, clumsiness, kindness, and they’re both a little off. They are definitely the same person (I didn’t write this theory someone else did) BUT IT’S SUCH A GOOD THEORY!!!

I had my own theory on this a long time ago. I thought since Dopey was clearly the youngest of the dwarves he'd spent his developmental years being talked over by everyone around him and so "...never really tried..." to talk. But the Angelman syndrome I think suits the character much better.
I know it's a Pixar film and you mostly do theories on Disney films but (if not done already), can you do something on Brave? I love that movie and would love to know more about it in general. Like the characters possible back stories?

IDK you heard this before, there's a theory suggest Dopey is not a dwarf but a human child, looking at Dopey you can see he's clearly the youngest of all dwarf, he have no white hair or beard and he behave like a child. Maybe he just too young to speak or he never learnt how to and he just mimic other dwarf's action. A theory even suggest Dopey is a young Geppetto, I'm not 100% convince but I do find it interesting.

I had a client who had this syndrome, on top of other things developmentally delayed. He exhibited Dopey to a T, the clapping, that was when he was really happy!

My theory is that Disney has a thing for pulling the rug under Mel Gibson. If he was considered to voice Dopey, that would be 2 movies in a row he was considered for hire as a voice actor for a character that was ultimately decided not to have lines.

Also bro I don't know if you ever noticed this but in #OnceUponaTime Dopey never gets cursed they cut out a scene when they had the Frozen Arc kind of indicated that he never gets cursed also when they had the finale in season 4 and they were all in an alternative world don't be still has his purple hat so I think the show was trying to tell us that Dopey cat get cursed no matter what curse it is I just thought that was a cool interesting fact

Besides Ariel, Are there any other Disney princesses who have children? In books, comics or information about them? I’ve always been curious to know.
Growing up i loved watching Ariel’s daughter in what was almost her own movie. So I hoped to see animated movies of the princesses having their kids go off on their own adventures.
There was going to be a sequel called Snow Which and the seven dwarfs:The Seven dwarfs and it talks about dopeys whole backstory and him losing his mom and the other dwarfs past and snow White's history pass
