  • For the first time, scientists have found a Neanderthal fossil that appears to have come from an individual with Down Syndrome. This find may provide us with important information about how Neanderthals cared for each other! This is a summary of a recent scientific paper "The child who lived: Down syndrome among Neanderthals?".

Neanderthals were humans the same way we are. Same Genus, different species.

I see it more like other human species show other ways of being human. They are a different species precisely because of the differences, not the similarities. They were not just like us.. they were stronger and more robust, had better senses. And although they had larger brains, they were wired differently, with much more brain space dedicated to the occipital lobe and less to the prefrontal cortex.. hence better vision, better low light vision, but not the same level of cognition as us. Smart yes... but not inventive in the same ways as us.

@@SeanMahoneyfitnessandartright. Their lack of cognitive ability in comparison to us wasn't just due the organization of their brains, when you adjust for overall robustness or body mass, they actually have significantly smaller brains. FE: if they were the exact same size as us, their brains would only be around 1100-1200 cc compared to our 1350-1400 cc

I have known a number of people who once their gums healed they pretty much ate what they want...
Tooth decay is common in the poor and drug addicts.
I can easily see the Neanderthal coping without teeth in just a few weeks and thriving in the weeks to follow.

They referenced humans for the plate joining, but it was a Neanderthal. It is just as likely that Neanderthal fusing age is different to humans. If they checked the fusing of all great apes and they are about the same age that would be fair, but by just checking humans doesn't seem that solid to me. I could be wrong however.

Interesting as always. We should remember though that , even though we have good evidence that some individuals wirh healrh issues were being cated for, we also have evidence of interpersonal violence and even cannibalsm from other sites. So.... Neanderthals were probably just as mixed a bunch as we are.
On a personal note I think the "old man" from Dmanisi is the best and most interesting example...... possibly because Im an old man with no teeth😃. Seriously, I do quite a bit of foraging and in normal circumstances could probably survive all right on what I collect , but I would certainly have starved if forced to do so just after losing my teeth. And thats with modern equipment available. Im sure the Old man had help.

@davidroosa4561 no. Adam and eve had children. Noah is descended from Adam and eve. Noah, his wife, and his sons and their wives were on the Ark. Only 8 people were on the Ark, everyone else died in the global flood judgment. You are descended from Noah. Since Noah is descended from Adam, you also are descended from Adam. Adam was the representative of humanity before the Creator God, and he rebelled against Him. Because of His rebellion, he and all his descendents suffer sickness, sin, and death. That's why this world is filled with sin, evil and suffering. The good news is that God sent His eternal Son into the world, and His Son lived a perfect human life, obeying God's Law perfectly. The Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, died on the cross in the place of those who trust in Him, and rose physically and literally from the dead. He is alive today. Jesus is truly God and truly Man, truly human. If you repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, your sins will be forgiven. Will you trust the Lord Jesus Christ?
