dude, your timing is IMPECCABLE lol I just started fixing one I bought last tuesday and I was looking for a few pointers. This is most welcome.

That's great. I hope it's useful to you.

@@spidiq8 turns out mine was most likely a botched repair attempt by a previous owner. The shutter blades were *nowhere near* where they should have been, and no they would have ended up there without someone actually putting them there

@@JeffDvrx Did you get them relocated and sorted? It's so easy to misplace items inside cameras so I can understand someone doing that.

@@spidiq8 I did, as far as I can tell either one of them can go above or below the spacer as long as it's between the two. The aperture blades gave me a headache of their own though haha... I ended up setting the two rings so that the guides would allow the blades to go from fully open to the smallest setting and _I guess_ everything should work fine. I'm way more used to German shutters than Japanese ones, a system like this is very unfamiliar to me. Now I'm figuring out how to set the two springs on the screw that holds the lever with the arm that moves the shutter blades (the one with the pin poking through the board, threading through the end of the aperture blades).

@@JeffDvrx This is further than I've delved and sounds interesting. I don't suppose you filmed it?

Real interesting. I've just got back into film photography, but SLR's. It's dearer than it used to be, but... isn't everything. Started processing myself too with B&W

Sadly yes it's much more expensive now but for b&w it's irreplaceable.
I've never found a satisfactory digital b&w conversion that gives the feel of film stock.
Plus you can never get that excitement of pulling the developed film from the drum feeling from digital.
You should look into some of the rangefinder film cameras if you're enjoying the SLR.

@spidiq8 I've not used a rangefinder... but, I do have a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 518/16 ready to go. :) Looking forward to that too.

@@ianlainchbury Rangefinders are fun for their compact often pocketable size. A fave of mine is the Olympus XA.
The Zeiss Ikon sounds nice! You should do a little video showing it.

@spidiq8 I may do at some point in the future. Inspiration for my rekindling of film came from "Shot Film Like a Boss"'s channel. He does some great videos if you've not seen them. Nice to be using film again though for sure. As you say... better than digital.

My rangefinder is a Yashica Campus, bought new 1960s and still working. What I like about rangefinders is that one can see what is coming into the frame unlike an SLR.

This is so helpful! A while ago I bought a working Canon Demi S and was really enjoying shooting with it, but it actually jammed on me mid-roll. Judging by the description you gave of how your camera was broken when you got it, I think it might be a similar issue on mine where the shutter leaf blades were sticking together and need to be lubricated.
My camera actually consistently had a problem where if the zone-focus was set to "slightly beyond infinity", the leaf shutters would jam open until the focus ring was moved. Which obviously lead to some funky pictures lol. But the shutter sticking is making me think that it just finally gave up and stuck closed.
Question about the disassembly: Do you think it's possible to access the shutter leaf blades just by taking off the front lens element with lens without disassembling the body? From your teardown, it sounds like the only thing required to access that part is a lens spanner/wrench. I'd definitely prefer to do that instead of tearing down the whole camera, since this would be my first ever camera disassembly and I'm nervous about breaking things.

I believe you could yes but the important thing to remember is don't flood any solvent in there that can creep into areas it shouldn't be.
Now I'm no camera expert and any decent tech would tell you the 'proper' way to do it would be a full strip and service of at least the shutter assembly but as a quick bodge you can try like this.
My thinking was it was worth a chance given it wasn't too expensive.
