  • Berning Robot I 35mm camera.
    Serial number 21873.
Carl Zeiss Jena 3 1/4cm f2.8 lens serial number 202899.
    Manufactured c 1937-1938.
Designed by former watchmaker Heinz Killfitt and manufactured by Otto Berning from 1935 in Dusseldorf, this was the first spring drive 35mm camera produced.
The drive was capable of taking 24 shots without rewinding. A skilled operator could obtain 4 frames per second.
The compact stainless steel body of the camera contains specially designed 35mm film cassettes.
The camera produces images in the 24x24 format. As a result, a standard roll of film can produce 50 images rather than the usual 36.
The rotary shutter is capable of speeds between 1 and 1/500 second. An internal yellow filter can be set in place using the switch around the shutter speed dial.
This camera is a slightly later version with the added shutter release locking ring around the central winding column.
This camera, with its innovative motor wind, was the precursor of the extensive range of cameras developed specifically for special covert purposes by the Berning Company over the next sixty years.
