    Thank you! I recently found a love for textiles (particularly relics from the 18th century and earlier) through my studies in Botany and interest in natural dyes. I've embroidered for a long time as a hobby and want to start making my own textiles for my projects. It can be expensive but this helps me out!

    Nice! Thank you! Question: if you plan to cover the whole weaving space to make a fabric to later cut out, would it make sense to put nails in all 4 sides of the frame? Seems like anchoring the weft could help keep the weaving straight?

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to put in too many nails. When you bring down each layer of weaving and beat it down with your weaving comb it would throw off your weaving if it was attached to nails on the side. A traditional 4 harness loom has no nails on the side of a loom.

  • @esteejmckee3880

    Why do you have two set of nails on your frame ?

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is much easier to add your warp threads when the nails are staggered. Also good if you are using a thick yarn then you only need to use one row of nails. If using a thin yarn for warp then you have it already set up to use all nails.

      I’m sorry but this question is difficult to answer as I don’t measure the thickness of yarn by oz.

    Hello Patti,
    I am new to this type of weaving my question is how come you didn't put
    nails on all four sides of the frame? I was at a wool arts tour and I saw these looms that were adjustable and they had nails on all four sides.

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The loom that I built is called a frame loom and for the weaving technique I am demonstrating for this series you only need warp threads that run up and down. Then you can pass your weft threads over and under to form your weaving. Therefore you only need nails on the top and bottom.

  • @galy-uh6yg

    why should we do two lines of nails in each side? can we do only one line of nails in each side?

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It makes it easier to wrap when the nails are offset. It also gives you the opportunity to wrap each nail if you want a finer weave or just wrap I row of nails if you are working with thicker yarns or fibres. But yes, you can make the loom with just one row of nails as well.

    • @galy-uh6yg

    What is the purpose of making TWO rows of nails, rather than all at the same distance from the edge? I notice some frame looms have all nails lined up at the same distance from edge. Please explain. Thanks so much for making this video!

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First reason for the the two levels of nails is that it is much easier to add the warp threads when their is more space between the nails. The second reason is that it makes your frame loom more versatile by giving you the option to use finer yarn or thicker yarn in your design. If you want to have a fine weave than you can use both rows of nails for your weft. If you want a heavy weave then you can choose to just use one row of the nails. This way your loom can create any style of weaving or mix the fine and the heavy look together which I did for this weaving series.

    Hi Patty, I was just wondering why do some home made looms have 2 rows of nail on top and bottom and some only one...is there a reason or is it just a preference thing? Again, love your serie on weaving...

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The first reason is that it makes it easier to warp your threads around the nails when they are not really close together.
      The second reason is that you will have two looms in one.
      If you want to make a wall hanging and you are using yarn that is bulky you can choose to only use the one row of nails or if you want to create a project like a table mat with more warp threads than you can use both rows of nails for a tighter weave.

    • @carolelynn4525

      That makes sense... I can visualize it now. Thank You so so much for your help and quick response. You have the best series out there, you are very knowledgeable, and clear with your instructions. Thanks Again.😊

    How wide are your stretcher bars from the lip in?

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

      I hope I am understanding your question.
      From the inside edge of the lip to the edge of the stretcher bar it is 1 3/8” (3.49cm).

    Thank you for your video. They are all very inspiring! I am looking to buy a weaving loom. Is there any one that you recommend, please? Thank you :-)

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so many variables. If you are new to weaving you might not want to spend a lot of money. You want to make sure you like the craft first. The basic loom is a frame loom with either nails, pegs or slots to warp your loom. The slots is the best one to buy. Also think about what you want to weave and how big you want your weaving to be. That will determine what size loom you want to buy. If you buy a larger loom than you can make different sizes of weaving. Go to your local wool shop and they might have looms for sale or check out amazon. There are lots of different company’s who sell looms.
