You wouldn't happen to know the dimensions for a 57s water pump? I've heard some may be a for different models and look similar to a 57s pump but doesn't really fit like it should. Just seeing if anyone has insight before I order and take my lower apart
I have my dad's 5.9 Mercury, Super Silent 6. He bought it new in 1956. We used it in Canada for many years, but in the late 70s early 80s, he couldn't find any points. (I found out later that the Sintilla type points were gobbled up by racing enthusiast). So when I got the motor in 2006, after dad passed, I installed two electric ignition modules. Last spring we used it in our annual crappie trip! It worked very well, and I think dad would have been proud.
Enjoying the pontoon rebuild a lot. Got one that needs the same thing. Thanks for sharing with us.
I have heard some bad and some good on those transistors but I haven’t worked with them yet ! Think the plug things bad a buddy put the stater plate on backwards ! Lol. I was always taught that never spin it over without both plugs in and grounded , never do one at a time , what’s your thoughts ? The 58’s are by far one of my favorites right up there with the 1954 QD-15 10 hp , just completed my collection of Holiday Bronze 5 1/2hp’s ( 56,57,58 ) ! I have 3 grandkids ! Lol. You do have some OEM tools there but look into buying a Magneto Synchronizer ( single ) you will never hand gap your points again ! No need to disconnect the points ever again !
Let us know how these Nova II's work once you get this QD motor running. I tried them a few years ago in an early 70's Johnson and they kept burning out. They only lasted anywhere from a few seconds to less than an hour so hopefully they have improved the quality of the components in them since then. By comparison, the red Atoms I've tried haven't let me down yet.
One, lasted about 3 minutes, the other just past 10.
@@BrandonsGarage Dang, just what I was afraid of. We've had some deep conversations about transistor modules for these motors over at AOMCI.org and one knowledgeable person explained how the Darlington transistor used in the Nova II's couldn't handle the voltage spikes found in the older OMC mags. They need the red Atoms!
@@mumbles552 Wonder if mounting the condenser back into the system would take out the voltage spike effectively.
So if you don't have the coil gap ring what's plan b? Is there a measurement across the contacts of the coils?
I've rebuilt a 1958 35hp Johnson and I have play in the ignition plate although the holes appear to be lined up. Any thoughts?
Wow, love the color on that motor
Brandon I watch your excellent videos all the time and have a question regarding these NONA @ chips replacing points on outboard engine. I have watched all the videos on youtube on this transition away from points. It seems every one of them converts a engine that uses the under flywheel coils like your johnson. I have tried on two occasions to use the chips on a 115 hp evinrude with charge coil and points ignition under flywheel that has exterior coils mounted on block. No spark at all even after reversing the polarity on the chips. >Help ORLANDO FL THANKS
Well, that is a completely different setup.
Magnet in your flywheel are designed for CDI units.
The NOVA chips are for the points and breaker type ignitions, and are not compatible; thus, why you see them in setups similar to mine.
@@BrandonsGarage No its a driver coil with points under the flywheel that fires external coils mounted on the engine block no cdi
How do you get the timing set with these?
for a gale buccaneer 1959 25 hp which Colin can I use
Great video ! Have a problem when I install the flywheel seams to drag the plate with the coils on it . ? I used a tool to locate the coils .
If you are striking the fly wheel, either your coil are too large(happened to me on generic coils) or you did not have them aligned correctly. Note the ring tool he uses. Very important to align the coil before snugging screws down...
very good video and excellent expiation, I always follow your videos from argentina greetings brandon's
It’s cool how you do stuff and not explain what you’re doing 👍
With plugs out to test spark i use a socket and variable speed drill which makers it much easier but you should not use it to try and start one with a drill unless you can come op with a ratcheting adapter that lets it slip if it starts or it can loosen the nut and back it off and could damage key way if its started to run or throw the socket and adapter in your face lol so far i have n0ot found a adapter rached i can use that will racket if it should start letting it slip
Will this work on a 1961 Johnson 40hp RDS-23?
It didnt even work for the 10 HP
But yeah, you could.
Hey Brandon can you give me the exact diameter and spec on that ring tool. Im gonna have a local machine make one as i cannot find a replacement for the one someone stole from my work bench...
its cheaper here:

@@BrandonsGarage my man! Thats awesome!! I was looking at 125$ or so.. thanks a ton. Ordering now, ill let you know how she holds up.. i was having a chuckle btw watching your vid. I was waiting for the abysmal fail. Did you ever get it working? I haven't had a chance to watch the follow up yet...
Do they make an affordable flywheel puller for the 2003 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke? I looked on eBay and can’t seem to find one for the smaller 6/8/9.9/15hp. All the pullers on eBay say 40+hp. Would appreciate your help, im sure you know more than I do lol.
made my own with bolts and a bit of plate
stevencox75.... do you have a video of it on your channel by chance?
@@Rscmgw23 no
They make a 30 one on Amazon that fit my 5.5 and 10hp.. have not tried others

what plugs did you get .TY
Copper Autolite 303
Had to special order them from O'Reillys
They weren't very much money.
What's the purpose the coil ring?
It lines up the coils to provide proper gap between the flywheel. Im trying to get the specs to make them as you cannot buy them ne where at this point...
Pm me in a few weeks i may be able to sell you one..
24:04 Shouldn't you be looking for the butterfly in the carb to move?
eh, on a newer ignition system, there isn't the play that this link& arm type had. So to answer your question; probably.
I'll adjust it both ways and report results.
So where's the finished product? Don't leave us all in suspense!
its coming, new video today
Wait why can’t you use modern wires???? Ugh
The graphite core? Dont strip the same.
Although.... Ive never tried.
Next project!
Brandon's Garage oh so say I was able to adapt them and I’m showing spark I should be fine??
yeah probably
Graphite ones has more resistance. What will the old coils like of them?
Very cool conversion. Can't wait to see how it idles/starts compared to the points system. Love your vids btw.
