In her 2012 Biography (Markus Thiel: Edita Gruberova - Der Gesang ist mein Geschenk) this TV appearance is mentioned. In those days she believed in sticking out the tongue ist the only way to achieve the perfect high note. Untill now it is embarrassing to her.

So wurde Edita Gruberova zum Beispiel 1971 für die Sendung "Ihr Auftritt, Bitte" in ein Studio des Österreichischen Rundfunks gebeten. Vom Klavier begleitet und im Minikleid sang sie die zweite Arie der Königin der Nacht: grossstimmig, unerschrocken, mit gestanzten Koloraturen und musterhaftem Lagenausgleich, jedoch auch ziemlich unbeteiligt. Und mit einer kleinen Besonderheit, die sie noch heute peinlich berührt: Bei jedem hohen F streckte sie die Zunge ein Stück heraus. "Ich dachte damals einfach, nur so kriege ich den Ton optimal." Egal: Die Fs kamen problemlos. Und die dramatische Mutter-Wut sollte sich die Gruberova im Laufe der Zeit schon noch erarbeiten.

I had the honor to see her perform this role in 1977 in Munich. After this aria. the ovation lasted for several minutes until she appeared embarrassed for causing such a long interruption.
GOD DAMN i admire how still she is even when singing the crazy shit....no tension at all. just stillness... a relaxed mind and a relaxed throat, and a relaxed sound. astounding.

+Khalid Al-Thani This, along with Zerbinetta are her best roles. When she started attacking Donizetti's Queens is when I can't no longer listen to her. And she had her great years. Now, she is unlistenable.
Vette gaddia I believe her voice was not made for Italian opera at all, she never maintained smooth legato line, she never had a precise trill, never had solid high notes (although they are effortless but scooped) her chest notes are the most awful they are like yawning. Zerbinetta is the only role i like her in.

Lucia at Lyric was my first opera as a nine year old with Sutherland. Since that time I have been in love with the opera. I also heard the one in 1970 with deutekom and Tucker.. Those were the days. I also taped highlights of the Gruberova/ Shicoff performance and have returned to it many times over the years. It remains a favorite.

I tool heard her Lucia in Chicago in 1986. They were tremeondous performances. The role was doulble cast (with June Anderson, who was adequate, to be gracious). I recall a critic who complaned that Miss Gruberova broke character to accept the ovation from the audience! Miss Gruberova never appeared At Lyric opera again. A great loss. Lyric did Lucia last year, and I felt as though I was hearing singing from a good music conservatory Lucia. How far we have gone from greatness in Chicago.

Edita is demonstrating only her wonderful vocal skill in a bare studio with just a pianist, cameraman and sound engineer for company. In such a setting it would be inappropriate and distracting if she made hand gestures and tried to fabricate emotion. She has shown a thousand times that she knows perfectly well how to present herself on the concert or oratorio platform or in costume in a packed theatre. She is the real thing and has been a terrific performer for so long.
