- Let's talk truck build! Canopy, front bar, lighting, wheels, tyres, suspension, roof rack, paint protection, UHF, rooftop tent and more!
In this video Chris sits down with Dean, owner of Big Dog Builds and explains exactly what goes into building one of, if not the best, off-grid touring American truck in Australia - Our 2022 @gmspecialtyvehicles9260 Chevrolet Silverado.
We cover what is done to make these trucks safer for towing and touring, more-user friendly when traveling and how we set them up for off-grid camping. We talk about why we do things a certain way and how long it takes to complete such a mammoth build.
Dean also explains how at Big Dog Builds, they focus solely on the 3 American Truck platforms, Ram, F-Truck and Chevy and the different options and packages they offer from a stage 1 with lift, tyres & suspension to complete off-grid tourers like ours.
Everything is taken into consideration before a build kicks off; purpose - how will the truck be used, budget and so on.

I watch Dean’s Big Dog Builds Channel. Bloody Awesome. 👍👍👍
He’s great! Super informative in his vids 😁
I was shocked when you put the cup on the lawn, it must have sunk nearly 3 inches.
Your old man looks after his grass 👌
🤣 that’s a mates place on the GC. 😁
Thanks Chris, great build video. Alan looks majestic. 👌
Thanks 😁🙏🏼 Al 🤣🤣🙏🏼
Another great vid Chris looked at you setup at the show its sick.
Thanks 🙏🏼
What an awesome build. Can't wait to see the walk around.
Thanks mate
On behalf of America, We Approve this video 🍻 Amazing ute!
Haha - thanks mate!! 😁
Okay what an awesome video on an awesome build.
Thank you very much for the entire rundown and why you built it the way you have.
Safe travels.
Thanks guys!! So glad you found it informative 🙌🏼
so cool! Amazing effort!
It sure was mate…the best team in the business
Saw this monster at the Caravan and Camping Show in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. Massive, congrats. Travel safe and keep the excellent content coming.
Thanks Mark…appreciate it buddy 🤟🏼😊
Awesome build guys looks 🔥🔥🔥
Cheers you bloody legends
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown What do you think about Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tyres for a similar build? vs the Toyo RT ?
Congratulations. Just a great infomercial. 👍
The amount of coordination and mechanical skills needed for this type of build is epic 😎 🙌
Just take my credit card. And I don't even live in Australia.
Again well done putting this all together.
Thanks…yep it was an absolutely amazing team. The best in the business! !
Awesome rig , there's a place for all your needs 😀 Greetings from south africa 🍻 🇿🇦
Thanks mate 🙏🏼
Cool Ep
Thanks 😁🙏🏼
Awesome truck
Cheers Nathan 🙌🏼😁
What a perfect truck. Beaut.
Thanks 🙏🏼
Congrats on a great build, definitely one with the lot so to speak. I’m in a similar position to most as it’s a struggle to keep 1 your caravan under 3.5t and 2 the tow vehicle under its gvm, although I have a gvm upgrade gcm then comes into play. Don’t even mention rear axle limits.
Definitely the way to go, was tossing up between the Ram and the Silverado because of the way the conversions are done, but your build has swayed me to the Silverado.
What was your time line from order to completion?
Cheers
I don’t miss those days of being overloaded mate…moving into an American truck has been a game changer for us. We will never go back.
Have you watched our video on the remanufacture of the Silverado? They do such an amazing job.
Umm it was only a 2 month build in total but it was in the planning for well over 12mths.
Love your channel. You didn't cover fuel tank capacity. Did you add long range tanks? Thanks
Oh bugger we forgot about that…yes we installed a 210ltr titan long range tank.
Hey guys, truck looks awesome, one question is did you use the cameras that are mounted on the back of the cabin, ? If you extended them how did you do it, who did it,?
No, we used the ones that are on the tailgate. Offroad Creative did it when they built the canopy 👍🏼
great truck for sure, but I'm not a fan of the lift kit @16:17 how do you compensate for the torque reaction with 6" risers between the springs and axle?
It’s not a worry at all…I’ve been running a lift like this for years in my 2019 Silverado and never had a problem 👍🏼
Hi guys, incredible rig!
We are building our chev and want to know what gps you guys are running? Garmin RV?
Thanks! It’s the Garmin Overlander 😁
Any plans on doing the Tundra if and when it arrives in OZ?
Nah…with our weights we need a HD truck.
Looks good. Were there any things needing to be done before registration? We’ve opted for NB2 to allow carrying more stuff, but is there any mods that are easier done prior to registration?
I heard on another channel that some things were easier done before registration and I’m wondering if that’s accurate?
Great question…mine was registered NB2 from new but still needed to be engineered. You can upgrade it to NB2 after the fact. Mods aren’t a problem but still needed to be passed by an engineer
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown
Thanks for the quick reply!
As we’re not likely to get everything at once, are there mods you’d recommend as ones to get first, or an order of sorts?
It sounded like Deano suggested suspension and tyres.
Mate it really depends what you’re doing with the truck?
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown we’re going to be touring. We’ve never done it before and anticipate starting slow, free camps will be common, probably not going to try to get into difficult off roading conditions.
I thought to start with: recovery tracks, 15k winch, uhf, maybe an empty canopy (to build upon later).
We’ll have an Urban X-Terrain family caravan, likely at or close to 3.5t.
Probably get your multi tow bar thing so I can load bikes on as well.
After what happened with Lapping the Islands F350 and water intake, are you reconsidering the snorkel?
No we aren’t mate…the ford air intake is down in the Tiago as opposed to the chev being at the top of the bonnet. The chev intake is also designed in a way that air goes one way and water funnels back out
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown seems Chev thought of that scenario, which is good to know! Great rig, safe travels to you and the family mate, look forward to the next videos, yeeeew!
how offen do you drive at night camped up using the air frier you could cook on the lights !!!!
😂😂😂
What's the ball park figure for a build of this high quality?
Just under 400k Jamie 👍🏼
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown copy that cheers. Beast mode set up
to think this one is going as well 🤯
🤷🏽♂️
Wait till you go looking for service parts for it. Like most of these imports the backup is so limited it’s crazy.
I’ve had an American truck for years and never had a problem. GMSV has over 60 dealers around the country. If we don’t have parts here there are millions in the states…only a three day flight
Ha ha ha - you gotta know what you want in the first place and then stick to a plan and kinda know the cost.
I’m a bit older than you old mate and NEVER built a 4x4 and surprised that once you buy your vehicle can spend that amount again on getting it right for tourer in our case. Yes I do have trouble believing in the 200 wagon BUT give it a couple of good years working out what we want to do will then determine if there is a next bigger rig as 4495 GVM is fine but want the big GCM up around 8-10 …
Love the build and the vids … positive vibes win all the time!
✅✅✅
Thanks so much Tony! And yes, it’s surprising what actually goes into building a tourer 😁
Hay mate got 2500 with 5 in 50:17 how can u carry so muchlift 37in tyres 2023 model with canopy loaded the truck with camp gear tinny on roof motor on back caravan on in the end of it all we had hardly nothing in canopy it was all out and on ground they then said get weight distribution hitch so there goes gen y45 im shattered what can i do i got gv M up grade S well but rear axle does not change
What gvm do you have?
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown
5 5T axle weights not changed
Great to see that your both are happy with the whole build. I see that your over the moon with our eboards from tmax_australia. I enjoy watching the videos that you both make. Enjoy the truck around Australia. Dwayne from tmax_australia
Thanks so much Dwayne! We absolutely love the truck - and as Chris said - the eboards are our fav mod!! 😁🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Go Chevrolet
😁🙌🏼
I shore they are sore from patting each other on there backs
🤣
The American trucks certainly handle the load easily, but these trucks are only as good as their spare parts network. I have heard of a Ford owner unable to source a basic part here in Oz ex USA. Australian warranty backed by the company who did the conversion, not U.S.parent company.
Ford Australia have not sold factory backed F series in Australia for many years.
On that basis, when u r buying an F truck in Australia, from a private company, who import the vehicle themselves, and then do a RHD conversion, without factory support, what do u expect ?
These small firms don’t have branches or service centres all over Australia.
Relying on them to invest a lot of $$$ to carry a lot of stock of spare parts, is ridiculous.
Via these small firms, spare parts availability and supply, is always going to be a potential hassle etc…
And, no factory warranty on the vehicle, as it was not imported, or converted with factory approval.
A warranty on these vehicles, is from the small company that imported it themselves.
Risky situation.
What if they are not around 3 years after purchase ?
🤷🏻♂️
Walkinshaw have been remanufacturing Ram in Melbourne, with full factory support since approx 2017.
Approx 6,500 new Ram sold by official factory backed Ram dealers in Australia in 2022.
Due to ongoing strong demand, a lot more stock / supply for 2023, will result in a much higher sales result for 2023.
Walkinshaw have been remanufacturing Silverado in Melbourne, with full factory support since approx 2019.
Approx 2,500 new Silverado sold by GMSV dealers in 2022.
As of September 2022, Walkinshaw set up a new / additional factory to remanufacture Silverado in Melbourne.
The previous premises can now just be used for Ram.
Capacity of this facility is approx 10,000 vehicles per year.
The stand alone Silverado factory also has capacity of about 10,000 vehicles per year.
A lot more supply of Silverado in 2023, to Australia, will greatly increase the 2022 Silverado sales result.
And Colorado ZR2, about to be released in Australia, and be sold by GMSV dealers.
More variants of Silverado also coming to OZ.
These Ram and GMSV dealers are all over Australia, and they are officially factory backed, so they have access to a spare parts supply etc.
As said before, a stand alone firm converting a vehicle without factory backing etc, is a totally different situation.
On the basis of so many thousands of official factory backed Ram and Silverado now in Australia, dealers do continue to carry more supply of spare parts, and can get them much quicker, then was the case a few years ago.
FYI
Ford Australia are officially getting back into F series sales.
First batch of F150 getting converted in Melbourne right now.
Customer deliveries to begin approx August.
Every Ford dealer in Australia will carry spare parts, and have access to them from Ford Australia warehouse….
And
Toyota Australia are currently doing R & D on Tundra with Walkinshaw.
Toyota Australia using Walkinshaw to remanufacture Tundra to RHD
As of early 2024, you can buy Tundra from Toyota dealer with full factory warranty and support etc.
This is a common misconception mate…GMSV has over 60 dealers in Australia. FTrucks have always been privately imported and don’t have the factory backing. GM and Ram do.
@@StephenFogarty2023 Great in-depth feedback explaining Walkinshaw history with Ram and Chev in Australia. Do you work for Walkinshaw?
@@iandibley8032
No
But I’m ex Motor Trade
I’ve always been very interested in cars
Grew up in a Holden family
Peter Brock was my hero
Holden began good mods and faster cars via
Peter Brock
HDT
Holden Dealer Team
Back in 1980.
Brock stuff from HDT was fantastic.
Approx 1987, Holden & Brock parted ways.
Holden then went into same arrangement, with Tom Walkinshaw in charge of
HSV
Holden Special Vehicles
After Tom sadly passed away, many years ago, his young son Ryan took over, and very successfully continues to be in charge of Australian operations
When Holden stopped local manufacture of Commodore at end of 2017, the easy option was for Ryan to close down HSV, and leave Australia.
Thank god he didn’t, as not everyone wants to drive a white Camry or Corolla !!
Ryan is a smart operator.
With Walkinshaw he did many pivot and long term approach.
Started doing Ram remanufacture to RHD.
HSV released an upgraded version of Holden Colorado
HSV remanufactured the Chev Camaro to RHD
Holden pulled out of Oz during 2020.
Walkinshaw continued by also having begun remanufacture of Silverado.
Walkinshaw not tied to GM
They have done Amarok for VW
All new Amarok launches here in April.
Walkinshaw enhanced Amarok will happen
As mentioned, Toyota using Walkinshaw to remanufacture Tundra to RHD
Walkinshaw business is now very diversified, they no longer just modify Commodores.
In HSV days, their biggest year was the modification of approx 3,500 Commodore.
The business is now hugely bigger than it used to be.
Walkinshaw will remanufacture or enhance approx 20,000 vehicles, or more per year, as of next year in 2024.
Walkinshaw employ Aussies, and support heaps of Australian business for their automotive needs.
Walkinshaw is a top quality organisation
Absolutely world class…
On this site, is an excellent recent video whereby Chris & Miriam, tour the Walkinshaw factory, in Melbourne, and see the remanufacture process up close. 👍
Oh yeah
Walkinshaw also fully own
New Age Caravans
They bought this business a few years ago, after realising the potential in this rapidly growing industry in Australia…
Must have cost a fortune, nice rig though 💀🤙🕶
Yes, it’s not cheap to build something like this!
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown how much, without sponsorship?😊
@@robertwilson1827 sponsorship still costs mate…just in a different way. Just under 400k this this setup
Another good vid but,
I thought you were boycotting WA?
When they treated the rest of australia so badly, we boycotted them. What they did was disgusting and inexcusable and we saw so many travelers devastated due to the lies of reopening dates. We do not condone what they did and made it public. Things are back to normal now and they are treating the rest of Australia as equals so we are here. Hope that makes sense? 😁
Imagine if the whole of Australia locked down international travellers, we all could have all travelled freely, like we did for a good 18 months accross WA till the border was opened. Sorry you were on the wrong side of that one. Regardless, good to see you have moved on.
The last time Chris drove at night? Hmm ... probably once.
Not sure what this comment is about? We drive at night quite a bit. Last time was a few days ago 👍🏼
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown Sorry, been following a while. Chris occasionally expresses his dislike of driving at night.
Great tow vehicle few of my mates have them but Absolute useless if you want to see iconic places around Australia as our roads and tracks just aren't built for American trucks its just that simple
creb track , OTT, high country, Fraser Island list goes on place's you couldn't go plus the fact got to be 0.00 parking it just to get Groceries another headache. Need a step just to use the canopy to cook seems not very Practical So many negatives for me. But it's your money and if you like it and are proud of it that's all that matters I guess 🤙
Exactly the same comment you put on FB…righto 👍🏼
@Aussie Destinations Unknown I look forward to watching your travels and how you get around this huge downfall of having a truck why touring oz 👍
Have a lovely day david 😂
Wanted a walk around but . . .
Have you seen the latest video in the Chevy playlist?
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown nope but I’m looking now 😁👍
Hope you find it 😅
Great if you want to stand out, otherwise...
Otherwise what?
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown ...otherwise get something else! Sorry but the arch gap and overall length/ width is a bit too much (styling wise) imho...
@@G-force_Motorsport in my professional opinion the length, wheel base and width make it extremely stable and planted for towing.
@@AussieDestinationsUnknown Not having tried one, but I couldn't argue against that! Practically speaking should be A1 as a tow vehicle.
Maybe in white...
Fantastic build. Good to dream be nice to have unlimited money
Thanks mate…yeah it’s taken a lot of hard work.
