    Correction:
    2:03 I pronounced "c" as "ch" in “céng jīng”. It should be "c". Sorry for the mispronunciation.

      Thanks, your teaching method is very good.
      I am little confused
      How can I make past continues tense.

    • @GraceMandarinChinese
      @GraceMandarinChinese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can use adverbs to indicate the time is past and use 正在 or 正 to show the action was going. For example, 我 “昨天” “正在” 睡覺的時候, 有人走進來(我“昨天” “正在” 睡觉的时候, 有人走进来)meaning: when I was sleeping yesterday, someone came in.

Explanations seem very flexible, easy to understand. Keep up the good work while you have the motivation! :)

    hey, nice video, well, there are some strange examples I've got to say. 我昨天吃一个蛋糕 is a bit weird, we'd rather say: 我昨天吃了一个蛋糕。 The same situation would be: 我已经吃了一个蛋糕。We do sometimes really only use time words: for instance: 他刚刚到 (Tā gāng gāng dào, he's just arrived).

    I'm a native(ish) speaker and I find this channel so interesting in learning the nuances of the language that I already speak fluently.
    Also, it's interesting how when Grace explained the auxiliary verbs for future tenses, “要回打算” can technically be a phrase/sentence on its own 😂😂😂

      you can add or not add it. The meaning is the same. Sometimes too much “了” would be redundant.

    These time words are very similar to the japanese language. Last year (去年) which is spoken as "kyo-nen". It sounds very alike with its chinese counterpart (qù-nián). 以前 in japanese is "ee-zen" and in chinese "yi-qián". It's very interesting!

    • @mateuslacerda284
      @mateuslacerda284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's even more fascinating that 書 in chinese means "book", but in japanese it means "to write". 在 in chinese (zái) it indicates the present continous tense, but in japanese (zai) it means solely the temporal word "present". I loved it!

    • @zachjarsle4606
      @zachjarsle4606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mateuslacerda284 書 in modern Chinese means "book", while in ancient Chinese and some of the sinitic language dialects in china it does mean "write" like in Japanese. 書 could mean "write" in modern Chinese as well when using the verb word "書寫", which means writing with brush or writing something big like history or legend when in formal article writing instead of daily dialog.

    Thank you for your video. For a suggestion, I would be interested in a video that goes through how phrases that sounds different when spoken in real conversation. For example, it took me way to long to realize my husband was saying 等一下 because it sounded like "dei-xia" to my ears. Or, what words often get omitted during conversational speech?

    • @GraceMandarinChinese
      @GraceMandarinChinese  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samantha Corber This is such a good suggestion!! Thanks a lot! :D

    • @pheasant139
      @pheasant139 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like "dei-xia" probably because your husband was speaking relatively fast. Just like liaisons in Western languages, Chinese, when speaking fast, may pronounce some characters "together". (I am a native mandarin speaker so I know haha. I myself also often say "dei-xia")
