This 1979 song fit right in with the disco of the period, and Shalamar had a lot of additional hits through the early eighties in both the US and the UK. Their first hit, "Uptown Festival" from 1977, was a medley of sixties R&B hits set to a disco beat. "Take That to the Bank" (1978) and "Make That Move" (1980) are a couple of my favorites of theirs.
That "pew! pew!" sound y'all have noted in a few late seventies disco songs started to be common after the first "Star Wars" movie debuted in 1977. I think it was supposed to sound like some space gun or something. Y'all should listen to Meco's hit 1977 disco version of the "Star Wars" theme. It may have been the first song to feature those "pew! pew!" sounds.

The great thing about music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s , specifically RnB music it just makes you wanna move something. Even if you think you can’t dance, the groove will lift you mind , body n soul. By the way the lead singer name is Howard Hewitt, Jody Watley , and Jeffrey Daniel completing the trio. Try “ Make That Move” and for a change of pace “ This Is For The Lover In You” …. Enjoy.

Oh, I wanted to share some music trivia with you guys relating to Shalamar. This groups was found and created by Soul Train creator and legend, Don Cornelius, and Dick Griffey (Soul Train's booking agent). It was initially supposed to be a disco-driven group, but then the direction of music changed and so the group became primarily an R&B and funk group. Band members Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniels were regular dancers on the Soul Train program before Cornelius chose and asked them to be a part of the group he was forming; for them to sing backup vocals to lead singer Gerald Brown, who left the group quickly and then was replaced by Howard Hewett (who sang the lead vocals in this song, "Second Time Around").

Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels started out as Soul Train dancers. The lead singer, Howard Hewett, is an amazing singer with a great falsetto. Please check out This Is For The Lover In You! Fun fact: Jeffrey Daniels taught Michael Jackson how to do the backslide, which was renamed the moonwalk. He also was the co-choreographer for MJ’s Bad video.

Great to see a Shalamar song. I am going to see them in December ,their 40 anniversary tour, a really funky R and B group with great vocals. Other good ones to react to are 'There it is' and 'Night to Remember'. To digress there is a Beatle's song you have to react to 'She's leaving home'-so good!-Colin Ward

Jeffrey Daniel (who sings the high part in the video) was more known for his dancing. He performed what was to become known as the “Moonwalk” and then taught it to Michael Jackson who then went on to do it live when he performed Billy Jean on TV.

This was the JAM back in the day! And still a vibe! Positive, melodic and so danceable. They had several popular songs in late 1970s-early 80s. You should definitely check out a few more of their songs. I recommend in order: A Night To Remember, and For the Lover In You (slow jam), and Make that Move. Shalamar's main singers came from Soul Train as dancers, if I recall, so you see they're nice moves on display here in this video. I loved their sound--Howard Hewitt was a heck of a singer, and Jody Watley had a fantastic sounding voice that brightened every song she sang with them. She had some hits as a solo artist in the 1980s but I always thought her voice was actually better suited to the group dynamic in Shalamar.

The Female singer is Jody Watley, who you might remember you did a reaction to her song "I'm looking for a new love" about 3 weeks ago or so. Jody and the lead singer of Shalamar Howard Hewitt parted ways back in the 80's but during the 70's Shalamar had many hits that graced the dance floor. Both Howard and Jody had very successful careers going solo, with Jody taking home a Grammy for best Female artist of the year (without doing a search I think is was 84) and the year after Jody's Award, Paula Abdul took best Female artist. Jody and Paula were neck to neck pumping out Club Hits, after Hit, after Hit.

Shalamar is comprised of Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. They met when they were all three dancers on Soul Train and the host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius suggested they become an R&B group. They had several hits on the R&B charts throughout the early to mid 80's. The group would eventually split up due to creative differences in the late 80's. Howard Hewett went on to have a solo career with hits on the R&B charts. Jody Watley went on to have a solo career with hits on the R&B and Pop charts. Jeffrey Daniel went on to be a Choreographer and worked with stars such as Michael Jackson, L.L. Cool J, Baby Face, Paul McCartney, Sheena Easton and Vanessa Williams in the late 80's and throughout the 90's. Hit's by Shalamar, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley include:
    1. A Night To Remember - Shalamar
2.This Is For The Lover In You - Shalamar
    3. Make That Move - Shalamar
    4. Dancing In The Sheets - Shalamar
    5. Show Me - Howard Hewett
    6. I'm For Real - Howard Hewett
    7. Once Twice Three Times - Howard Hewett
    8. Say Amen - Howard Hewett
    9. Don't You Want Me - Jody Watley
    10. Real Love - Jody Watley
    11. Everything - Jody Watley
    12. Some Kind Of Lover - Jody Watley
    13. Friends - Jody Watley
    14. Still A Thrill - Jody Watley

Hey there Jay & Amber, hope all are and is well. Really enjoy your vids and your reactions to so many realms of music, a true and genuine appreciation for what is indeed a universal language. I just watched your vid featuring Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4. The 70's were my H.S. days and this was a "must have" on vinyl and for sure in the car. For me, that was 8 track (yea I know, right LMAO) to cassette to CD then through my iPOD and everything else since. I left a comment some time ago suggesting an artist who's work I've enjoyed and I thought to plug it again. Jay you mentioned funk in that vid and Amber, you really have a liking for horns . . . Johnny Guitar Watson. My favorite album being A Real Mother For Ya. You like to strut . . . the "Real Mother" title track. Prefer to grab on close & glide . . . "The Real Deal". Very unique guitar style and the scat vocals rival the best of them (Ella, Billie, Cab, and so many more). Might strike a familiar chord with other channel members as well . . .
