    I remember hearing a story about Shannon back on the old Casey Kasem show. I think Shannon made a pledge to herself that if she didn't hit #1 on the Dance Charts with her first single, she'd give up music forever. Well, she did hit #1 with her first single (this one). She also hit #1 with her SECOND single, "Give Me Tonight", and later a third time with "Do You Wanna Get Away". This is one of those songs that never leaves your brain, ever. This was right in the same wheel house as artists like Teena Marie. There are a few others that you haven't checked out, though. "Meeting in the Ladies Room" by Klymaxx, "Mercedes Boy" by Pebbles, "The Way You Love Me" by Karyn White; "A Love Bizarre" by Sheila E. (feat. Prince), and "Everybody Everybody" by Black Box.

    It was 1984 and I was out one very hot Saturday night on the west side of Chicago at a very popular dance club. Like always, the dance floor was packed shoulder to shoulder by all these amazingly talented, beautiful couples just tearing up the dance floor.
    For reasons I can't recall, probably heat exhaustion, around 1:30 am the dance floor was empty for a brief period and Shannon's "Let the Music Play" fired up and right away a couple ran out there that were very different from all the folks you'd normally see out there dancing for they were both very large and considerably older than everyone else. I remember better than half the people in the club were either giving them a ""Are you two serious?" type looks and many pointing and laughing with their friends. I thought it was absolutely awesome that these two folks, who appeared to be in love, having a beautiful night out and didn't have a single f*ck to give what anybody else in that club thought and just blew me away with how much fun they were having. You should have seen them out there just gliding around the dance floor as if they were were skating on ice.
    She was mouthing the words and the two of them were acting out the lyrics to the song. By the time the song had ended I don't think there was a person in the club that wasn't part of this amazing roar of approval at the conclusion their moment out there alone on the dance floor. For some reason this sticks with me and it's probably because it was one of the most beautiful, awesome feeling and kick-ass displays that I've ever witnessed.

    I suggested this almost a year ago, glad you got around to it. The song is basically dance club culture, dancing with a stranger before even knowing their name, unspoken vibes, but no one is committed to dance with the same person. So she was getting her groove on with a guy, then another song came on and he moved on to dance with someone else and she is just trusting the music and the groove to bring him back to her. This was a very common occurence in the clubs back then.
    The other band of this genre I think of is PLANET PATROL with tracks like Cheap Thrills, Play it at your own risk, and I didn't know I loved you til I saw you rock and roll.

    Shannon was one of the first to introduce Latin Freestyle into the clubs. Latin freestyle was a popular genre in the 80s, characterized by sporadic, dark, syncopated rhythms (similar to Latin American rhythms) and synths out the wazoo. It became a fast, cheap way to make hits. Thanks for this video!
    That said, you guys should react to some of Alisha's stuff. All Night Passion, Do You Dream About Me? (from the movie Mannequin featuring a young Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall) , and Too Turned On are some of her popular ones.

    • @soakedbearrd
      @soakedbearrd ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What’s interesting is that freestyle music was mostly created by blacks and latins, like hip hop in the beginning especially in the Bronx. Blacks artists developed hip hop and Latin artists developed Latin freestyle which was a hybrid of club, some disco elements, minor keys heavy, hip hop elements and synth pop elements. As the genre grew more Latin influenced beats came in as well.

    I remember Shannon from the Streetsounds albums in the UK with 'Give Me Tonight'. I requested this song at the school disco in '83 and the crowd clearing so some of the lads could show off their breakdance moves! (I believe she was a classically trained vocalist too!) Awesome tune 😃

    Glad you guys discovered the 'FREESTYLE' genre. Basically it's like love/break-up songs, done to a dance beat, during the early to mid-80's up to early 90's (were the height of the genre's popularity, even though songs are still made to this day). NYC was on fire (when i was kid) to this music! Clubs, parties, block parties, you name it! Mostly Latino and Italian-American artists sang the songs, as well as black artists, like Shannon, Joyce Sims, Trinere, Nayobe, Monet, etc... My faves were Stevie B, The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Sa-Fire, TKA, Cynthia, Noel, Coro, Fascination, Expose, Judy Torres, Sandee, Alisha... so many more! Y'all should DEFINITELY do more of this genre!

    • @jkbezo1
      @jkbezo1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is very true and great comment. I was a kid same time frame as you jaja in LA, CA. Also to add it was /is very popular in big urban areas with large latino, black, Italian population in NYC/NJ, Illinois (Chicago), Michigan (Detroit), LA/San Diego, California, the Bay area in CA, Florida (Orlando, Miami), Philly, Toronto (Canada), Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus, El Paso), DC, overseas in Italy. I agree though that the heavy presence and start up was on the east coast (NYC/NJ and Miami, FL) Many great Freestyle artists came from there.
      Also Filipinos and Filipino-Americans love it.

    This song was created with a synthesizer and drum machine only. One man mixed them both together in the studio to bring out all the little nuances of what was the finished project. I was not a fan of so called “disco” music back then but during my stint as a radio DJ in the late seventies and early eighties, I played this song often because of the tremendous drum line in it. And I really liked the way Shannon sang it. It even has a synthesized cowbell in it.

    RSR FAM Y'all did it. FREESTYLE FREESTYLE. This is the Club music during the freestyle era in Miami, New York and a couple other big cities. Underground sound that was everything in the 80s. It was music that was popularized by its Latin hip-hop sound. This song is one of the ones that started it all. She had the B side of this song "Give me Tonight" was also a jam.
    Exposé, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, The Cover Girls, Lisette Melendez, Cynthia, Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond and Will to Power to name a few.

    So many extended mix versions of this song back then as well. There was even a version playing on the airline radio station you had a choice from with those little movie headsets you got for long overseas flights. I remember expecting elevator music but there was actual relatively modern music which was a bit of a surprise. Especially as I had neglected to pack extra batteries for my walkman...

I don't know why those two songs stick out except they were both monster hits around the same time. Good night I can still smell the White Rain aerosol hairspray and "Sure" spray deodorant permeating that locker room!! Lol!

    Shannon was part of the Freestyle Dance movement (not to be confused with Freestyle Rap). This is a kind of electronic dance music that was popular in the mid to late 80s, which I don't think you've reacted to until now. It was mostly an underground dance club scene, but some songs like this one did hit the charts. It competed with New Wave Synth dance clubs. You can read about this music style in the Freestyle Music article in Wikipedia.
    If you do any more freestyle songs, I highly recommend the following:
    The Cover Girls - Because Of You - th-cam.com/video/lSwDOENwNR8/w-d-xo.html
    Expose - Exposed to Love - th-cam.com/video/23MGB8QtLgI/w-d-xo.html
    Cynthia - Thief of Hearts - th-cam.com/video/-d42VJ8AgnU/w-d-xo.html
    There are tons of others! Rob will especially love these songs!

    I was 9 when this came out, and I spent a lot of time after school at the Boys Club, before it became the Boys and Girls Club. That summer, breakdancing became really popular, so they made one of the activity rooms into a breakdance room, with lots of cardboard on the floor. "Let the Music Play" was a favorite for a lot of the boys to pop, lock, and break to.
