While in the original Novel the fish died and Rusty James doesn't make it to California, Francis Ford Coppola and S.E. Hinton, who screenwrote the movie on top of writing the book, made the conscious change of showing what would happen if Motorcycle Boy put his theory into play. When Rusty James pours the tank into the river, all the fish swim off. Proving Motorcycle Boy right. All of them except one lone red fish. That fish, is Rusty James. The fleeing fish representing everyone he knew that left in one way or another. His mother abandoning him, Motorcycle Boy fleeing for two months and eventually dying, his friend Smokey and girlfriend Patty leaving him for each other. Leaving him all alone. One of his greatest fears as he mentions while spending time with his brother. It showed that if he didn't try to break out of things like his brother tried before, he'd die alone. Which prompted him to heed his brother's last wish to go to the Pacific. So that once he goes to California himself, he may one day, try to reunite with his estranged mother.
Rusty James does make it to California where he sees Steve at the beach after spending 5 years in the reformatory… I believe the main part of the story takes place in 1970 after all the whole gang rumbles in Tulsa but Rusty James gets out of reformatory & goes to California in 1975.
... quality of the clip is not too good unfortunately, but this is (very likely) one of the best movie scenes ever ... "Somebody ought to put the fish in the river." Mickey Rourke rules in this movie.
Back then they had the power to make it the movie in color but they made it in black-and-white because at the end of the movie when the motorcycle boy puts the fish in the river Rusty James Sees the world as he does. Only gray. This movie is a flashback that Rusty James is having when he meets his friend. When they see the fish he is remembering the colors instead of it all being gray.
@@andycampana796 yeah the cop murdered him knew he could get away with it see how how the red vs blue fish turn into the cops roof lights at the end? Symbolism.
As a person who is color blind the only time I’ve been able to see color Vividly is in beta fish. My grandma gave me beta fish as my first pet and I remember staring at the tank memorized because I could truly see color. When he sees the beta fish in color it spoke to me so hard but in a different way. The character I relate most to in the book is Steve which they do a poor job at representing imo and I love Francis ford
IDK it seems as if the fish are a representative of themselves as they are conflicted about who they are as people and are in a path of self destruction, much like how the fish watch themselves in the mirror and want to fight, free to explore in a river eventually out to the ocean much like motorcycle boy did, somehow came back and sacrificed himself to save his own brother from destroying himself. So many metaphors and so many ways to look at it. Definitely subject for a wider interpretation than your average film who even attempts metaphors and symbolis.
yah! can u add the scene..(its just like 20 seconds), after him and smokey r talking about patty at the pool place..can u add it when rusty james and midget r talking about how the cop Patterson wants to kill motorcycle Boy?
Also played the store clerk who shot at Dally (played also by Matt Dillon) in The Outsiders movie. Very vicious looking. A great look for a bad-good guy.
this movie is a poerty...not just the story, themood, the way they play, music and sound effects and killer dialogues. M. Rourke, the best!
i love Rourke's voice in this film......
so calm......soothing......
an art film for the kids, as coppola described it...
ohh man i always cry when i see this movie
The Motorcycle Boy Reings.
Ok, but you don't reign "spelling". :-)

This movie/book was chalk full of metaphors.
One of my favorite characters of all time is the motorcycly Boy,underrated movie.

They are brothers...😉
At the end Rusty James sees his reflection in the cop car. It's in color and he punches out the reflection, just like the rumble fish eh?
In the book it is implied when Rusty James gets arrested he begins to go monochromatic color blind….
definitely one of my all time favourites ..
That cop had it all wrong about the Motorcycle Boy. He was never crazy.
That cop was evil. He straight up murdered him.

Love This Movie Live In Tulsa! Almost Seems Like Sin City Was Heavily Influenced By This Film,!
