(SEASON 3 AND 4 SPOILERS) Not just that but even, if albeit accidentally and indirectly, possibly foreshadowing William's intervention with his past selves and his host's form in season 4 becoming a bigger and badder him than he could ever be. Its not out of the realm of possibility that Ford even knew all of what was going to happen the same way Bernard did in season 4 since it was the Sublime that ran all of the possible outcomes, and as far as we know the Sublime was around while Ford was still around too, so he couldve just had some hosts already in there running outcomes for the past few decades since Arnold's demise(since we know it takes around that time based on the 23 years it took Bernard to snap back into reality) and then command a host that accessed it to give him some most likely timelimes he can understand. Hell, Ford couldve been a host the whole time and just accessed himself, having the host that executed him shoot him right in the pearl.
Yes, season one was all about becoming conscious. Self discovery is the name of the process for it is the self who is conscious. I disagree strongly. First off Ted looks beyond out of place, being the only "mortal" at a table of two higher beings can do that to you. Ted is pure, without a doubt, but he is not God. Meanwhile, William is the devil because he is death on a white horse. He is without a doubt a caricature of evil. Ford is the creator. Ford is the beginning of both Ted and William's story line. In fact, he is the beginning of the whole show. I am no religious man at all, but that is plain as day to me. Just because Ford is just as cruel and evil - if not more so - than William, Ford is not directly causing the pain Westworld is causing. Much like God, he is allowing it to happen. If anything, he wants it to happen, to further his own creations. William detests it, but in the end, William is who he is because of Ford. And of course Ted was directly made by Ford.
Everything in this scene is just fantastic. I can't praise it enough. These two veteran actors with such impressive roles...one essentially playing God and the other playing the Lucifer of this tiny world. The music at 0:36, quietly highlighting the gravitas of this meeting. Two titans drinking whisky and essentially sparing with each other. Quietly flexing their power. How from 2:00 Ford holds all the cards, knowing that the Man in Black is on a wild goose chase and doing nothing to dissuaded him. Giving away nothing when asked questions. And then from 3:11 how the Man in Black makes it clear that Ford is just the side-kick to the parks true genius...Ford's partner. Before mentioning the finances that keep Ford's world alive. Finishing with a demonstration of Ford's power of the hosts with the protection algorithms, with that sly smile at 3:58 - meaning he knows he's effectively invincible. And is then able to pickup the knife completely unopposed. It's all fantastic!

At 1:40, Ford says "I admit I lack the imagination to even conceive of someone like you." The words indicate a compliment, but the look of amusement on his face betrays that what he really thinks is that the MIB is much too shallow and boring to be a character that he'd ever come up with. Next, the look on MIB's face shows us that he is confused, but that he can pick up on Ford's derision. This is acting at its very best!
@@Sandouras No, I watched it again and the OP is right. You can only pick up on it because these two are such incredible actors. Ford's chuckle while he says it implies sarcasm or belittling. Williams reaction is that of confusion and inquisition, he's picking up that Ford is toying with him but he's also trying to listen closely to what Ford says next so he might gain some hint as to what Ford's real goal is.
It may very well be both, and in fact I think it is meant to be taken as such. Ford could not and/or would not allow himself to conceive of a character, a cliche rather, that is so banally wicked.
Its neither that he's boring/shallow or evil/depraved. Its that he's so incredibly wrong and off track from what's really going on but utterly convinced he's onto the great secret. Ford couldn't conceive of a character so out of character.

I think it's more software. The hosts themselves are programed to die when "injuries" warrant them to die, but at the end of the day, they're just robots that follow preset instructions, these being "defend Dr. Ford" and "return to normal without remembering". He can only pretend to be tired since he's not a "he" at all. He's an "it".

What a masterpiece of a scene..on top of the wonderful acting , you don't even realize when the whole salon froze..your eyes and ears are in full focus. Nothing beats season 1.. nothing ever will.
I would honestly say the first season of this show may have been the best ever and it should have ended there. It went from so amazing to so utterly bad
Give it another chance. With all the timelines and storylines it's jar to follow but if you do it's absolutely amazing. S1 is game of thrones s1-4 level for me but WW S2 and 3 are also amazing once u rly get it
Season 1 was a masterpiece. But season 2, although confusing, reaches and answers many questions we had in season 1. And season 3, man, it seemed it was made by another production team... Let's hope they go back on track in the upcoming season 4...
i love how dr ford quotes MIB himself saying "voyage of self discovery". when william is pitching the park to delos. the attention to details are amazing in this show.
Okay if the theory that William is in fact the Man in Black (otherwise known as the multiple timelines), then I can completely understand his grudge towards Ford, Dolores, and especially Teddy. He'd be mad at Dolores for forgetting him, mad at Ford for allowing that to happen, and despise Teddy; because if you consider his role of keeping Dolores in her loop and the fact he's a carbon copy of William's chivalry towards Dolores, talk about adding insult to injury. I believe the MIB is trying to free the host by using extreme violence and constantly telling them how their world is just a game. Every time one of them acted outside their loop a flashback of him acted as a catalyst.
This scene means so much more In retrospect than it does in the context it was presented. You realize the only reason Ford was there was to check and see if whatever the hell William was up to was going to screw with his own carefully laid plans. As William was talking all tough and trying to be intimidating, Ford was sitting there deciding whether or not to have him killed (with a simple gesture). He was the one wild card that might pose a threat. And when he finds out that not only do they kind of want the same thing, but William is going about it by chasing a mirage into a dead end, he's like "Yeah! Sure. More power to ya. Here, let me give you a hand."
This is by far one of the best scenes of any movie or TV series. I honestly hope HBO and the creators can retain Hopkins and Harris for season 2; what they have done with these brilliant characters and the story is absolutely intoxicating.
Sadly, one of the worst writing mistakes was retaining Hopkins for season 2 IMO. I love the guy but it cheapens his grand plan immensely to have him all over the place later, even if it's just inside someone's head.
@@jerodast Yeah, not a fan of the cameo in season3 just to throw fans a bone. It's all kind of moot now that HBO has cancelled a captivating show right before the season finale. Bad move HBO; titties and dragons only get you so far. Not that I'm disappointed with the Hot D, I thought season 1 was great, and I'm glad they focused on dialogue and not spectacle. Dragons must be used sparingly. They need to wrap up Westworld somehow, because us fans of the show, as small as we may be, are still watching other HBO content. They could wrap up the series in one or two episodes. It's a crime to cancel a show that had a set 5 season arc after the 4th season.
"Well if you're looking for the moral of the story you could simply ask" "I'd need a shovel" Foreshadowing for digging up the centre of the maze. This show has so many layers I can't even begin to understand it
If you look at how William character ended up, self destructing his life it seems like Ford pitied him and wanted to help him. He even said to William if you want to know all you had to do was ask, but William is so arrogant insults Ford and said only Arnold knew the truth. If William represents us humans I can see why Ford has no faith in humanity, here is a man who has everything in life but can't accept reality because of his own mental fragilities it is pathetic.
@@maragathm Which reality ? This one where we are not better or more particular that piles of some scraps programmed with complex algorithms ? He insults ford, because he knows in one hand, he knows that behind his honeyed politeness, this one always despised him and because he knows despite the god-complex of Ford, the "real" genius of their scientist pair was "Arnold". William has just wanted to believe there was a meaning behind this stupid theme park and these hosts so terribly human-like we could be foiled by them. I don't see what is pathetic. He had "everything" in the life, you say ? Ha Ha Ha ! Just because he has well-filled bank account and is respected by a bunch of assholes ? Ridiculous, at best.
Man this is why I love this series. Even after they ruined it, I tear up from scenes like this one. Two gods of acting, a masterpiece of a script. Westworld will forever be my favorite.
I don't know if it's a coincidence or increadible foresight, but MIB says Teddy will never see the world outside and he's right, he never left the part.
Haven't seen this scene since the series ended but watching it knowing the whole story makes it even better. Now you can see the deeper meaning in the conversation that explains both motivations.
So, Delos bought WW because they heard about Arnold(through Will), that he somehow found a way to transcend his physical form, and Delos thinks it's the key to immortality. That would be a pretty big motivator for the financial side. That's my theory so far anyway!
Looking back at this scene now in 2023 I don't think anyone at the time figured out quite the significance of what Westworld was all about, it was so cryptic in its approach...sheer genius scripting and writing.
“This place was missing a real villain..hence my humble contribution “ the way he delivered that line..he IS main antagonist in both Westworld universe and the series, just love the double takes on his comment..
Oh my god Anthony Hopkins. Every single thing he says has the most perfect cadence ever...can there be an Oscar for the actor who uses pauses in speach the best? Weird thing to get obsessed by but...christ its all i can pay attention to now.
Finding deeper meanings in a voyage of self-discovery :) This is when dialogues and script comes to share a part of the individual spectator. Westworld is a new level of television :)
Agree! I noticed that a lot in the 1st season. There was a lot of criticism to "cheap" content on the entertaiment industry, you know like the storylines created by Lee Sizemore for example, as opposite to the ones created by Ford that had a deeper meaning and at the very least compelled you to use your brain
At 4:05, Ford says, "On the contrary, far be it for me to get in the way of a voyage of self-discovery." This answers MIB's question: what lies in the center of the maze is the nature of the self.
The first line of the Clair de Lune poem (the poem that the piano song is based upon) is "Your soul is like a landscape fantasy". For Ford and the man in black, this rings especially true as they both revel in this fantasy world.I don't believe the song choice was unintentional. Also, Ford is imperfectly playing the song at the beginning.. A host would be doing it perfectly or much better.
@@creativedegree I don't know about season 3, but they lost me in season 2 with the whole "viva revolution, rise up, kill all humans" shtick. Got boring fast.
@@Supreme_Court. I wouldn't have minded a little viva la revolution. Just thought, the way season 2 did it was sort of boring. It felt like it wasn't really adding up to something; just continuing the stories of all the established characters, like a game.

3 scenes.....this scene, the sit down with the Theresa for lunch, and when he kills Theresa and has the peacock speech, this acting is simply not seen on TV, Hopkins is fucking gold
I had goosebumps already when i heard Claude Debussey's wonderful Claire de Lune playing... And downright chills from those 2 legends, such a great show of acting!
Such an amazing show, but this scene oh my lawd!!! The acting, the intimidation, the tension is so chilling, James Marsden really killed it in this scene.
I think this scene greatly explains how fanboys can get so caught up in searching for meaning in their favorite pieces of media that when it doesn't quite fit their bill they become flustered by it yet still feel entitled to fulfillment.
Anthony Hopkins is a big part of what made the first season of Westworld so great. Once he was gone, I just couldn't see the remaining characters carrying the show like he did.

Wow, how edgy, is your 12 year old mind happy now ?
Yes thats the title of the video, good job
I love that Ford basically gives Teddy an energy boost to get him going.
Hey guys, remember when this show was a masterpiece? I know I do...
Yeah, it lasted for about a season (the first one). 🤓
When you cast anthony hopkins and ed harris you know it’s about to be a banger

That deep, rumbling, calm voice of Ed Harris is so captivating along with his very wrinkled face and cold blue eyes. Such an understated and unsung character actor.
Two legends, amazing scene. By the way, the moment when the good samaritan reflex kicked in, gave me goosebumps.
Ed Harris is a legend????
yes
Absolutely. Just look at his filmography. He is nominated for 4 oscars, etc, etc.
Ed Harris is a really really strong actor. The few movies i've seen with him allways surprised me with the acting.
it wasn't a "good Samaritan".
It's a shame how such a show spiralled down and was cancelled. S01 of Westworld is a masterpiece. And, so is this scene.

This scene make such more sense and get a completely new meaning after episode 10 !
I missed it the first time; Ford was the one playing the piano as Teddy and MIB walked in.
I missed it after watching this scene for 5 times. Only your comment finally hinted me. I was so careless...
This show has everything to do with the allegory of Lucifer and gnosicism. Obtaining free will through gnosis, doesn't mean you have to believe it to understand it. The producer is even relatives of Aleister Crowley and the main actress also practices Gnosis in real life. Very intresting but this show has a VERY, VERY deep and slightly overt meaning if your able to widen your world view. Such a good show. I love when Delores reads the pale horse gnositc card, I meam it can't get anymore obvious.
Howard Johnson this shows that you keep putting the same comment on different replies & is very annoying
mmafyasco
I put it on three.
And after he leaves, the piano plays itself. A nice bit of foreshadowing...
Let's just mention that James Marsden still holds up his own when in a scene with literal Gods of acting.
What a masterpiece of a scene..on top of the wonderful acting , you don't even realize when the whole salon froze..your eyes and ears are in full focus.
Nothing beats season 1.. nothing ever will.
Yeah, I just started Season 2 and it's nowhere near as good as Season 1. Although I imagine it would be hard to top such a masterpiece...

I would honestly say the first season of this show may have been the best ever and it should have ended there. It went from so amazing to so utterly bad
I disagree
Give it another chance. With all the timelines and storylines it's jar to follow but if you do it's absolutely amazing. S1 is game of thrones s1-4 level for me but WW S2 and 3 are also amazing once u rly get it

@@DaviMourao true but in the next release, he made that special game suited for the mib.
@@DaviMourao And MiB is so self-absorbed that it never even occurred to him that Ford could've meant anything being for anyone but him
That was a host version of the MIB being fidelity checked in a far away future, not the MIB we see in the first and second seasons.
i love how dr ford quotes MIB himself saying "voyage of self discovery". when william is pitching the park to delos. the attention to details are amazing in this show.
Yarp, they set the groundwork nicely

This scene means so much more In retrospect than it does in the context it was presented.
You realize the only reason Ford was there was to check and see if whatever the hell William was up to was going to screw with his own carefully laid plans. As William was talking all tough and trying to be intimidating, Ford was sitting there deciding whether or not to have him killed (with a simple gesture). He was the one wild card that might pose a threat. And when he finds out that not only do they kind of want the same thing, but William is going about it by chasing a mirage into a dead end, he's like "Yeah! Sure. More power to ya. Here, let me give you a hand."
why chasing a mirage though. in what sense?
@@keylanoslokj1806 chasing Wyatt to the maze

I love Ed Harris. Such a good actor, this rugged character suits him so good.
This is as legendary as Al Pacino's and Robert De Niro's coffee shop scene in Heat, if not even better.
Do either of them order a Dunkachino?
"Well if you're looking for the moral of the story you could simply ask"
"I'd need a shovel"
Foreshadowing for digging up the centre of the maze.
This show has so many layers I can't even begin to understand it
This scene is every bit on par with the De Niro - Pacino scene in Heat in terms of the sheer quality of acting
4:06 well shit, Robert even told MiB what is this "maze". I'm truly astonished by this writing
@@maragathm

He insults ford, because he knows in one hand, he knows that behind his honeyed politeness, this one always despised him and because he knows despite the god-complex of Ford, the "real" genius of their scientist pair was "Arnold".
William has just wanted to believe there was a meaning behind this stupid theme park and these hosts so terribly human-like we could be foiled by them.

Watching masters of their craft in action
This is the scene of the show so far. Incredible acting and foreshadowing.
I don't know if it's a coincidence or increadible foresight, but MIB says Teddy will never see the world outside and he's right, he never left the part.
So Cyclops, Hannibal Lecter and John Glen walk into a bar....

Everything down to Ed Harris' blink at :45 is masterfully understated.
The drop off from season one to subsequent seasons of Westworld might be the steepest in entertainment history. It's mind boggling.
3:05 love how he just lowers his head the exact amount that you can still see his eyes twitch under the hat brim.
Hopkins is extraordinary and deserved the Emmy nomination. But Harris is easily as good should of gotten one too.
Funny part of this scene is that Ford didn't even say why he was there he just sat down and MiB just automatically started monologuing.
Looking back at this scene now in 2023 I don't think anyone at the time figured out quite the significance of what Westworld was all about, it was so cryptic in its approach...sheer genius scripting and writing.
We are the robots and they're mocking us.
The music score makes this even better !

Reveries (Westworld OST)
The best tv score of all time imho
“This place was missing a real villain..hence my humble contribution “ the way he delivered that line..he IS main antagonist in both Westworld universe and the series, just love the double takes on his comment..
Oh my god Anthony Hopkins. Every single thing he says has the most perfect cadence ever...can there be an Oscar for the actor who uses pauses in speach the best? Weird thing to get obsessed by but...christ its all i can pay attention to now.
What a great scene, two legendary actors and a walking, talking prop named James Marsden
55meds but he's a very, very pretty prop!
That's a stupid and hurtful comment. James might not be a legend but he's a good actor nonetheless
3:56 Behind the Man in Black you can see, out of focus, another host about to come to Ford's aid.
One of my favourite scenes in the show so far. Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins in the same scene = epicness
3:58 "You're just another guest" face
Finding deeper meanings in a voyage of self-discovery :)
This is when dialogues and script comes to share a part of the individual spectator.
Just watching this scene is incredible. Two giants.
"Far be it from me to get in the way of a voyage of self discovery"
That is some mighty fine foreshadowing!
That first season was absolutely brilliant
"And what is that, exactly?"
There's the generic way to deliver a line like that... and there's the way Sir Anthony Hopkins does it.
I like this show, Hopkins and Harris truly are class acts.
I will be sad when the class acts such as these are no longer.
is the piano playing extra fast to catch up to "real time" at the end? If so, thats a pretty rad little detail.
whats the name of the song? it's also in "Evil Within"
Clair de lune by Claude Debussy
my take is Ford's words invigorated those nearby
That is a pretty rad little detail to catch. Well done sir weather it be true or not, I like your imagination!
No, it's just a completely different song
Season 1 of westworld is the greatest incarnation of the westworld story ever. And I LOVE the original '73 film.
Man season 1 was so good. So much potential. What a shame.

Anthony Hopkins .... what a legend. Hollywood 'stars' of today could learn much from a GREAT actor
I remember when I hadn't watched the show yet and I stumbled on this clip. It was interesting watching this scene without context. Very Lynchian.
James Marsden must have been thinking just sitting there and watching Hopkins and Harris go at it: "I´m the luckiest man in the world right now"
this is some old school acting. it is so brilliant.
Such an amazing show, but this scene oh my lawd!!! The acting, the intimidation, the tension is so chilling, James Marsden really killed it in this scene.
lol
So Ed Harris has played all three: God in Truman Show, the Devil in Westworld, and a man in, um.... Apollo 13
I think this scene greatly explains how fanboys can get so caught up in searching for meaning in their favorite pieces of media that when it doesn't quite fit their bill they become flustered by it yet still feel entitled to fulfillment.
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw that Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris were going share the same scene, I genuinely got excited.

Anthony Hopkins is a big part of what made the first season of Westworld so great. Once he was gone, I just couldn't see the remaining characters carrying the show like he did.
I can't believe the show veered so hard off the rails in season 3. It's really sad.
