This was really nice to watch, thanks Michael. And I enjoyed reading the comments too. By a weird coincidence, my new album is released today, so there's three new songs on my channel as of now. I hope people enjoy them.
To me all that matters is the emotion the music conveys. I'd rather listen to someone pound on their instrument and wail, than something played perfectly with no meaning. So if you found this video intimidating, thinking you could never play something that complex, then please remember, it's not what really matters.
Love to all. Get well soon Eric. 🖤

@@Guitargate The verse is Lydian. It's like an Am to F chord sequence, but resting on the F. (Sorry I'm transposing here, but these seem like more guitar-friendly chords! I mean, E flat! Who does that)
Now, Am and F is really a VIm to IV sequence in the key of C. And that's where the chorus goes: C! So it sounds really uplifting and resolved.
I didn't plan any of this. I just wrote a melody and words, and then found a nice tuning and worked the guitar around it.
The groove is 6/8, but leaning heavily on 4, so it's basically a "cross rhythm" all the way through the song.

I've seen him live playing for 30 people, I was early and by coincedance I helped him with the lighting, there was nobody of the venue who knew how it worked and that's my job so that was funny. Jon is a very humble and nice guy and nothing tricked in this video, Jon can do it live too! At the end of the concert he got of stage and preformed in the middle of the room full accoustic. I saw the owner, who didn't really knew who Jon was, with tears in his eyes, when Jon played High and Dry(Radiohead). Jon is a one of a kind Guy! Respect!

From Wikipedia: "Jon Gomm started playing ukulele at the age of two. Classical guitar lessons began at the age of four, and at twelve he was accompanying his father, a music critic, to blues gigs in his hometown of Blackpool."
What has been left out here is that his father was also one of the first Roswell "alien hybrids" the US Govt experimented with mixing alien and human DNA, from the ones that had crashed to Earth in the summer of 1947....

I saw Jon perform this and a whole set in a very small Glasgow pub a few years ago, I was literally about 10 feet from him. When we went in he was just sitting at the bar like a normal bloke, I had to double take when he casually said "Alright mate" to me. Afterwards he had plenty of time for everyone. I asked him about his tuners and some other stuff. A proper humbling experience from a humble guy. Jon you are an inspiration. And I love your philosophy on guitar playing and your love of effects. 👍😎

Jon Gomm is a uniquely talented musician who’s technique’s are exquisitely well pronounced in the most impressive ways possible. His music is truly beautiful and emotionally connected. I discovered him for myself just a few months ago and instantly became a fan. Song for a Rainy Day, is so amazing. Which he did as a rearrangement of a song written by one of his students as a tribute to his unfortunate passing. This song was so well performed and articulated that I couldn’t help but feel its intensity. Jon Gomm, is quite simply the best fingerstyle guitarist I have come across.

Basically, follow Candyrat Records TH-cam Channel, and watch all their videos... Antoine Dufour, Andy McKee, Erik Mongrain (I’m not sure if he’s with Candyrat though), etc.... All that stuff really inspired me to practice when I first picked up guitar. I remember watching videos of Dufour and Tommy Emmanuel for hours every day after school as a young teenager. I still put it on for a while when I’m trying to relax, meditate, or even when I go to bed... Don’t get me wrong, I love a wailing electric guitar. Some blues, rock, jazz, metal - all of it, any day of the week, but this style of acoustic playing (I suppose it’s called “percussive”?) is very special to me.

this man is literally my idol when it comes to percussion guitar, he's the reason why i actually decided to give it a try, i wanted to do things like this because it just opens a new realm of possibility for the guitar and brings new meaning, lets you convey stronger emotion, take each part of this song, put it on other instruments and yeah it'll still sound great, but by god doing them all on 1 conveys a level of skill, love and downright emotion you cant achieve anywhere else. its admirable to say the least.

I saw Jon live, must be 15 years ago, at the Black Swan in York at the suggestion of my cousin. Been a fan ever since.

I saw Jon play in my hometown about 9 or 10 years ago, along with Andy McKee and Preston Reed. I'll be honest, I wasn't that into this whole style of music at the time, but Jon's set, and this song in particular really blew my mind. Incredible from a technical perspective, and truly beautiful to listen to.

His low E (and possibly A) strings are actually bass strings too as he couldn't get the sound he wanted with regular strings. I saw him in York in the uk once and he blew my mind. Then was lucky enough to use the same producer with my band years later. FYI he's just released a new album today and it's amazing 🔥

Michael, I spent my first 8 years of playing guitar pursuing this genre and know the rabbit hole inside and out. In the two years since, I have dedicated myself to learning how to play the guitar the “normal way” which was spurred by the Grateful Dead.
If you have any questions, I would be overjoyed to discuss matters of techniques, gear setups from the Passionflower video, etc, as well as Dead culture/music and the possibility of combining the two. Keller Williams is the only person to bring chops like this to Dead music so far that I know of and I’m working on figuring out how to potentially integrate the two in my own way.
Thanks for bringing killer content on a regular basis.
    Best,
    Darrius Spangler

I’ve been lucky enough to see Jon play live twice here in Belfast. It’s hard to believe how mesmerising he is to watch in real life and the pedals he puts through the PA make it sound like a heavy metal band at times. There’s lots of people doing this sort of thing in recent years and he’s not a pioneer but he’s certainly unique and world class. He’s a new album out too which is meant to be awesome!!

So good. 'Wukan motorcycle kid' is also one of my all time favourites of Jon's. The story of the song translated into music is really what makes it so memorable.

i’m not someone who typically listens to percussive guitar but Jon is the only exception he does an amazing job executing that and his singing just complements his playing so well

All that incredible technique, AND singing at the same time... but let's not forget it's a fantastic song too. A lot of guitarists who go down this route just don't write music anywhere as good as this. Their music is in service to the technique. Gomm's technique is in service of the song.

Someone has probably already mentioned this but those are banjo tuners, pre set to tune between without going sharp or flat. This in no way negates Jon's ability, if anything he ascended the majority of modern percussive fingerstylists incorporating techniques like this. He's one of those players who blazes the trail that countless others follow

I can barely strum bar chords in rhythm trying to sing let alone holding a beat on my guitar while fretting with both hands, picking, tuning the pegs, and whatever else is going on. Incredibly playing and such an amazing song.

Jon wrote this song about a flower growing through the concrete outside his flat. 🤯 I asked him how one goes about learning the various techniques required to ultimately combine them the way he does, & he said he is working on a method book but in the meantime he recommended “New Acoustic Guitar” by Peppino D’Agostino.
He’s also got a unique pickup/mic setup, which I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I think it’s a combination of 2-3 internal pickups/mics, one for percussive sounds (contact mic), a “traditional” internal acoustic pickup/mic, & a line-out, & he’s able to mix the three to his liking. It’s something like that. Plus if you listen with headphones he applies a vocoder to his vocal, distortion to the guitar, etc. Cool stuff & great guy. Thanks for doing this video. Please consider checking out Pino Forastiere’s “Wild Parking,” Andy McKee “Drifting,” etc. Bill Frisell is always welcome too ; )
Oh! After seeing your commentary on Danny Carey I’m confident you’d like drummer Mark Guiliana. Check out the video entitled “Mark Guiliana drum solo with Jason Lindner’s NOW vs. NOW” for starters. Ok thanks, bye. 👍
