- A prairie-born songwriter known for his storytelling and adherence to traditional music, Colter Wall continues to win over listeners across the world. His effortless cool and authentic personality are present in every performance.
This release is the perfect end of summer cut, penned by legendary Canadian rancher/ songwriter, Ian Tyson. “Summer Wages” has become an anthem for the working West, and Colter Wall has preserved another classic song for us in this new video. Recorded in an undisclosed Nashville location between ranch hand gigs in Texas, the new video features Wall’s longtime band member Patrick Lyons on the dobro. Lyons is responsible for the tasty steel on the recent album Western Swing & Waltzes. Taking the live video series world by storm with Colter Wall’s rendition of the Stan Jones classic “Cowpoke”, Western AF is excited to bring this newest collaboration to viewers. Will you guys ever put this on Spotify?
Is it western as fuck ?
That moment when a Canadian is more country than anything coming out of Nashville, TN
A Canadian singing a cover of another Canadian. There's some true cowboys north of the border
As a Nashvillian I can assure you no one is more disappointed in the state of country music than us.
Them high plains boys are pretty country haha it takes a hard person to exist out there.
Almost all of Canada is pure country. Nashville is for sellouts
This isn't country music, it's COWBOY MUSIC, son
This guy is an absolute once in a lifetime type of talent.
Hell yeah he is!
You are correct
Yup. Don’t tell anyone. 🤫

Dangus Changus howd you know
He looks great for being born in 1849.
My only problem with Colter Wall covers, is he does them soo good, that it’s then hard to listen to the original the same
Same the only song i still think is slightly better than colters version is night herd song by ramblin jack eliot
He does big dave so good i cant listen to the original
For someone like me who got into country music by hearing Colter Wall these covers of classic country songs help me explore the genre
Please do listen to tony rices cover of this song. It's beautifullly done too
Ian Tyson does it far better than he does.
“Northern Montana.... Funny man”
Good people
*clears throat*
Classic
“Northern Montana... Funny man” should also be on a shirt, I’d definitely buy it 🤷🏼♀️
That T-Shirt needs to have a photo of Colter looking very unamused
Are we just gonna ignore the slide player’s magic?
No we ain’t! I turn it up even louder when it’s his turn.
NO WAY WE WILL NOT
But when Colter wall said "go ahead bud" That's worth mentioning
And “yes sir” was right on time
Not a chance!
My Dad first introduced Colter Wall to me about two years ago. He was fighting cancer. We would listen together....makes my heart ache now
I'm sorry for your loss, Chris. May your dad's memory live on in you and in the music you shared.
Time will help. It won’t fix anything but it will dull the pain.
I pray for your heartache
I've been, through that three times. Dad, wife, and Mom. But Mom, didn't have cancer ☺️.
Head up brother
Best voice in real country music
It really is just ridiculous. Truly something to behold.
certainly the most unique. I cant get enough of his music.
Amen.
Him & Charley Crockett are my favorite "country" artists at the moment. They still don't get the recognition they deserve.
@@ComedyBros5 yessir charley Crockett gang!
For the love of god, release this as a single
Amen
I think Western AF puts some stuff out there, think I've seen a playlist on Spotify. Do some searchin you might find it somewhere.
And dont add a thing. Just like this.
Please... Put this song on Spotify.
It really touches my soul, deeply.
Nobody comes close to Ian Tyson with this song.
Fine AF!!!!
Colter Wall.
Because country is an unstoppable force
Ol Colt might as well be 200 years old when he opens his mouth, and the cowboy ghosts of the past come rearing to life right in front of you. I wonder if when Colter would cry as a baby, it just sounded like an average adult man screaming.
Edit: *WesternAF,* would you please consider bringing in Vincent Neil Emerson for a song? He's a criminally underrated working country artist that I'd love to see y'all bring in for a nice session, instead of the live recording y'all did a few months back. Thanks for the great work you guys do!
*comes out the womb* "Well..."
@@MrAppalachia Hahahaha, damn right.
To calm him down they'd give him a pinch of dip and a shot of crown lmao
@@2bitmarketanarchist337 When Colter left his parent’s home he turned to his dad and said “You’re the man of the house now, take good care of my mom.”
@@ComedyBros5 His dad is actually the former ...premier I think its called of Saskatchewan
Western AF introduced me to Colter Wall awhile back and I'm so proud of the good ole Canadian boy getting the love and recognition. Being an Asian woman, raised in Toronto, who just happens to randomly love country music, I always felt out of place. Country music from all over the world is getting its moment in the sun!
I’ve grown up moving across the north eastern states and never ran into any real country people but the moving around made me relate to these rambling country songs
I'm from the south and while the "country" people my age are listening to the crap on the radio I'm listening to my dead country heros and people like Colter Wall.
Dude I thought the crap on the radio was what country music was and I just found this and was like "ohhh this is the real country" yeah this is good as fuck
But this is Country music coming from the same continent as all the other country music 🤔
the Thrift store Cowboy yeah and so does jazz but that doesn’t mean they’re remotely similar in any way
Is it just me, or does this song get even better after the 500th listen?!
Yep -it does !
Fun fact: Buffalo AirwayS C47 WWII era plane operated out of Yellowknife NWT is named after this song, which is by the Canadian Country Legend Ian Tyson about blowing a summers wages from the logging camps in the beer parlours on Main Street in Vancouver.
Now this is country music
Absolutely love Colter Wall, but this comment section needs way more appreciation for Ian Tyson- especially today, on his 87th birthday.
I love Ian Tyson's original
Ian Tyson is legendary! Loved him since 1967 or so!
One of my biggest thrills was seeing Ian sing "Four Strong Winds" on a perfect summer evening in the 1990s
Colter makes me really miss things I didn't knew I wanted. Chords and Lyrics below folks, have fun. On Ultimate Guitar by tomorrow as well.
Colter plays this song - as usual - two half steps down with Capo on 2, you can play it in standard tuning without Capo though as well.
Intro G C G G/F# Em D7 G
Verses G C / G Em D / G C / G D G (in 2nd verse, a G7 is added after the first G)
Chorus D C G / G G/F# Em C G / D C G / G Em C D
Interlude G C G G/F# Em D7 G C G D G
Last Verse G C / G Em D / G C / G D G / C G Em D G
[Intro]
[Verse 1]
Never hit seventeen when you play against the dealer
For you know that the odds won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone, when your friends are out to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone like summer wages
[Verse 2]
And we'll keep rollin on, 'til we get to Vancouver
And the lady that I love, she's living there
It's been six long months and more since I've seen her
She may be gambled and gone, like summer wages
[Chorus]
In all the beer parlors, down around main street
The dreams of the seasons, get all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber, waiting for the falling
And the hookers standing watchfully , waiting by the door
[Verse 3]
So I'll work on the towboats, with my slippery city shoes
Which lord I swore I would never do that again
Through the gray fog bound straits, where the cedars stand a watching
I'll be far off and gone like summer wages
[Interlude]
[Chorus]
In all the beer parlors, down around main street
The dreams of the seasons, get all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber, waiting for the falling
And the hookers standing watchfully , waiting by the door
[Verse 1]
Never hit seventeen when you play against the dealer
For you know that the odds won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone, when your friends are out to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone like summer wages
Years are gambled and gone like summer wages
Your a good man
Putting in some honest work and not asking for anything or for the sake of a channel plug. It isn't too common and certainly not in a comment section. It is refreshing to see though. Good on you man.
man that a solid, thank you !
Thank you sir.
Be warned if you play this 2 half steps lower in the registry your voice will sound even more like a young girl compared to Colter lol.
I love the fact he doesnt over indulge in that deep voice of his. He keeps his style natural live sounding and doesnt have do that “flashy” thing.
You mean like the "new" country singers do? Paul Brandt in particular. Makes me want to barf.
@@alan4sure I haven't heard that name since the 90s lol. Is he still making music?
@@jaredgreen3232 yeah he is as far as I know. He's from my area.
I grew up around true working cowboys in the badlands of NM and West TX. While I chose a different career path the characters I met, worked with and admired as a young man; their stories, music, art and culture left a mark on me. For no good reason, I was always sceptical about cowboy culture north of the CO/NM state line. I found out about Colter Wall about the same time my daughter started attending college in Montana. I've made the trip to see her several times by driving through Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana while listening to Colter. I get it now. He is definitely an old soul and expanded my narrow mind. Hopefully one day I'll get to explore the Canadian cattle country of his youth that left such a deep trail in his mind. Well done young man.
Thanks for the thought provoking comment 👍. I’m from Vancouver but have visited Canadian Cattle country many times. It’s vast and dry and barren. Hard folk living there. Even Vancouver was just a watering hole for all the timber workers looking for booze and company , up until the 80s! This song was originally composed by a legendary Canadian country musician in his own right. Ian Tyson I believe? Take care
You gotta be a certain kind of man to brave the winters this far north. Some say strong, i say mildly Retarded.
Been listening to all kinds of music for a while now. This may be my favorite performance I’ve ever heard in my life. Have not stopped listening to this on repeat for weeks now.
High pressure when Colter Wall says “go ahead bud…”
Written by the the great Ian Tyson.
Colter absolutely nails this song.
@@TheBigBruski Yep, except he leaves out the verse "She's a woman so fine, I may never try to find her. . ." which expresses the longing and fear that keeps the central character from going back to try and contact her. I wonder why Ian didn't sing it either--pretty sure he wrote it, never heard of any co-writers. Anyway, I like it. Otherwise, it's a great reading of the song.
Colter wall can make even the most city boys wanna be cowboys

73 years here and I thought country was gone, then I heard my 26 year old son playing Colter. Thought he was an old timer...well I guess he is. 😊
Finally, we have a "Stan Rogers of the plains"!
THIS IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE IAN TYSON SONG. This is incredible
If love to see a Corb Lund and Colter Wall duet covering M.C. Horses. Or Royal Wade Kimes Dyin Breed
Michael Temmen Cowboy Pride too. It’s right up his alley.
CowpokeCannoneer I would like to hear him do “Someday Soon” all three are great tunes, if you like the western songs give Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Rodeo Wind” or Red Stegall’s “Dawson LeGate” a listen, I think colter would do those well too.
This and Someday Soon are mine!! Seen Steve Earle do this in concert 4 or 5 times, he does a great version too!
From my hometown, his grandparents lived on the same block as my brother
It doesn't get any better nowadays than Colter and Sturgill.
You need to listen to Ian Tyson who originally sang several songs this guy has tried to sing.
@atfinn both of them are in constant rotation in my playlists.
@@power_hungry_diesel7841 I definitely will. Thanks!
Please add Cody Jinks to this list, Ive never understood the love everyone has for sturgill, he doesnt seem to be able to hold a tune in a bucket. perhaps I should give him a second chance.
@@wuskers Sturgill's best work is live, not studio. Check out some of Sunday Valley.
I'm a simple man, I see a new Colter Wall video, I listen and I like. The fact that this came out on my birthday makes me like it even more.
Happy Birthday Bud 👍
Happy birthday. 🍻
"I'm a simple man..." another overused yt comment. Where is originality nowadays?
Love this.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm surprised you're into this kind of music, Austin.
Now this is a pleasant surprise
Gotta love when creators I admire, admire the same musicians I do
Hell yeah, buddy.

His looks are growing into his voice
Real country
My only beef is that this isn’t on an album yet.
Ya really I used up all my data playing on TH-cam in the car
There was once Hank Sr, then Cash, Haggard, Nelson, Jennings, and Coe.. Now we have this man. Keeps getting better!
Ian Tyson would be proud!
Keep singin the good ones friend
I would love to see Colter cover a Stan Rogers song
I was thinking that too
I think Field Behind the Plow would be a good one for him to cover
My favourite singer singing my favourite song originally by Ian Tyson
I def grew up in the right generation if it means I got to hear this dude's unmatched talent.
Man's a Canadian Icon
My daughter and her boyfriend are fans, that’s how I ended up here, but I’m glad I made it. I’m a little late to the party, but I’m here now, and I’m glad I got here!
I heard Ian Tyson singing this while riding in a 76 Dodge Power Wagon, (4wd natch) hauling a load of pipe from Lake County, OR, aka "the big empty", to Pocatello, Idaho to quote a Valley Irrigation System for a cattle rancher.
If you can picture it you're as old as I am. Lol. My first love and husband was driving. He pulled over cause I wanted to hear the song over the sound of the pick up and pipe trailer rack on the roof. We had just crossed Fandango Pass. It's one of my all time favorite memories of a time in my life that's gone like summer wages.
When I ran across it on TH-cam and heard Colter Wall's voice and that AMAZING steel guitar break, yes sir, I was transported. Dropped my horses hoof, sat down on the barn floor and cried like a baby. Not much brings a tear to my eyes having already mourned two husbands and my only child.
Someone tell Mr Wall to cut it out, he's scaring my horse!😢❤🤗🏇
child.
I remember listening to that Ian Tyson Cowboyography Tape in the Jeep with my dad all summer, so this was a trip down memory lane for me
You don't know how many quarters I put in the juke box to hear this in the 70's.
Defff one of my biggest inspirations
Colter makes me wanna go back home to the Prairie even though I’m born n raised in Surrey🤣
Another Ian Tyson classic covered very well by an excellent artist.
Man. I cannot stop listening to this
He’s not country music… He’s real music…Bringing the sound back to its roots…
No flash, just back to the basics!
Colter makes me absolutely proud AS HELL to be a busted up tattooed lineman/ranch hand from Alberta Canada. Best pickup truck tailgate beer song ever, Ian Tyson would be proud! The entire western Canada is anyway!
Now this is music 🎶
I have loved american western movies since I was a kid. Now I love Colter Wall. Saying hi and thank you from Finland!
Hello Maria 👋 how are you ?!
@Tanja Maria: Hiya! I'd like to recommend Sam Peckinpah's "Junior Bonner" (1972), starring Steve McQueen and Robert Preston. It was Steve's favorite film.
your voice takes me back to 1960 and I've never even been there.
I love Colter Wall’s music! He makes me wish I had a horse to ride!
Get one. The relationship is like no other you will know.
proud to be canadian
Brad Wall's son from Speedy Creek, Saskatchewan. Hot dang, this is some old-time country music magic!
Colter wall may be 25 but hes 45 in my heart
If his voice is this gruff and smokey now at the age of like 25 can you imagine what he will sound like when he is 60?
Sam Elliot and Tom Waits
@@bigmac51290 fair point.
When he's 60 he won't have a voice no more, it'll just be grunts and moans and we'll appreciate it all the same 🤣
Calling it now, his voice will age like a good whiskey in a barrell.
Steve Earle??
Wish this would hit on the radio
We're watching an anomaly right here. No one else is like him.
Thank god.
Gosh DANG!! THIS MAN IS A LIVING LEGEND
Hail nimrod
Our son introduced Colter Wall's music to us Jan 2019 after his 2nd year of fire fighting in BC stationed out of the Kootneys . Bought us tickets for an Xmas gift in Vancouver with other fire fighters and their parents. I think it's safe to say the entire 'Rocky Mountain Fire Fighting' squad think his got a special gift worth sharing here in BC.
They sure do ma'am
Country music 🤠🔥🔥🔥
Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson

is SO dang good
Colter...YOUR version of this song...is forevermore the standard. It is superbly arranged...with minimal instrumentation. Your voice is quintessential "cowboy"...like coyotes and hot dust. Your pine...is sublime.
thanks for that, my favorite for 40 years!
Unbelievable. His voice is haunting yet familiar, so aged with a beaten down tone usually only heard by people in thier later years. If your in NYS let's jam!
Haunting and familiar aren't opposites. It'd be more along the lines of "haunting and familiar but new still"
From Canada:
Most Americans know very little about us.
Anybody think it’s better that way?
This man better go down in history. I will be there every step of the way!
Please god put this on Apple Music
I feel like I am witnessing something special every time I hear him sing
From the first tune i herd im hooked man damn good tunes brother
This guy is just f*cking incredible
He mastered both kinds of "Country Music".....;)
Even Jake n' Elwood would agree....
There really is no more pure of a voice than this man right here.
I have not been this impressed by music in a VERY long time.
Colter wall makes me feel every emotion in one in a good way
That slide solo was absolutely insane, what an amazing version of this classic song.
Truly amazing to see Colter’s evolution , from the brewery sessions to the newer songs , I know not all people enjoy Colter’s new tonality , but damn if this isn’t the best evolution... years will pass and his music will only get better .
Colters dad. Brad was premier of Saskatchewan.
He drove home 2.5 hours every day after work.
They lived at the end of my street. Brad owned Waylon’s Cadillac. Colter is named for Jesse Colter. Brad thought naming him Waylon was a little much. Lol. Great People.
Love to see Colter covering old cowboy songs, specifically this one by Ian Tyson
When not knowing what to listen to, I "default" to Colter Wall. He's thát chillax
Holy shit. This man is really honing his voice into something even more incredible.
A Dingo 100%
this guy is exactly what American music needed
Yes sir
Best song I've heard Colter Wall sing yet.
Ian lives 20 minutes from me
Colter grew up 3hrs from me
This makes my heart smile more than I can ever start to describe.
When I was a teen(around 17sh) I never really liked this guy. Now i'm absolutely addicted. I used to think his voice was too low and sounded weird. As I got older I started loving him and his bassie voice. his new singing style on his new album got me extra hooked! Seems likes he's found the voice that fits him perfectly. I'm now 22 and i love all his music. Colter has to be on my daily playlist.
Great job, on an Old Song.
I could listen to this song all day, excellent performance. Absolutely, well done by both men.
Man that cowpoke song was something else. This ones great too
Yeaaaaaaaa mah boy Colter
Now THIS is country.
After hearing this lad, my desire to keep playing aaalmost left me...like summer wages.
Colter is 120 years old and he don't even know it.
Great song!
His latest album is just great.
Not many can write them like Ian Tyson
