Busby StandUp I said the same thing about Sturgill a few years ago(I’ve never heard anyone else use say “sing the phone book” 😂🤣)Both have an amazing country voice and SEVERELY underrated guitar prowess
This is, in my opinion, his best song. Someone else said this but I definitely agree, if this song had been released 60 years ago it would be a classic.
My dad's family is buried on a butte in South Saskatchewan. His Mom & Dad and 17 of their 18 children. My dad will be their last when we bring his ashes there this summer. Thank you Colter Wall.
This kid is one of the most epic story tellers in any genre of music. If you can't appreciate this, then I'm afraid your inner Jukebox has done been broken.
Take a trip over to VHSonTape and WesternAF, my friend. This genre is more alive then in 50 years. (sorry, that only goes out to those with a broken jukebox)
Read a mainstream piece that criticizes this session. Honestly made me sick. They claimed his second attempt was much better. Nah, gimmie the heartfelt stuff everytime. Keep your overproduced , for the masses bullshit. It means far less. Even at a glance.
I don't know what it is but your comment kind of enlightened me about who colter wall reminds me of. Ralph Stanley. Not the music style, but the power his story telling has.
Back in the day, if I didn't go to school, my dad told me then, your coming to work then, I grew up in Cypress Hills, cutting post, learned how to drive a 66 3 speed chev manual transmission and everyday after work we would stop at the lil lake in the middle of Cypress Hills and we would have fun, god I miss those days, I hardly ever went to school, I never took any books home, I learned everything from my dad, he was my step dad but he's the only dad I knew, I started working 5 years old, everytime we had tests and quizzes at school I always passed, my dad taught me as I worked, I'm so glad I learned from him and all my step brothers and step sister's. The memories are always fresh in my mind, I'm so blessed to have had all the human beings in my life and for air that we breathed and all shared, I'll see you all again dad and brothers and sisters, I know your always around me, I catch a glimpse out of the corner of my eye, I know your all there guiding me to this day, I know your all out there on some other world waiting to come get us when it's our time to leave here, I'm 54 now and it feels like I'm here for another 100 years but that's ok, I know your all out there, I'll see you all again, I can't wait but we all have to run our time here first, I can't wait to start living again, all of us together again. I wish that everyone knew what we all know, the end here is all that matters now, so to all you other human beings here I'll tell you, you have everything to live for here for now but life here has to run its course then the others that are not here are waiting to come get us, so have that to look forward to when you are not feeling yourself or your down, life goes on elsewhere just let your life run its course here, you will understand when you're drawing your last breath, believe in that, believe in god. 5:51
“Henry took to stealing, robbing on the CP rail. Got the Devil on his shoulder, and the lawman on his tail.” Those are some of the most clever and descriptive lines I’ve ever heard. Boy he can write...
Agreed, He is way better live. After the studio and recording people put their 2 cents in they ruin him a bit. I bought some cds and didn't like them so I still listen to the sessions.
Amazing the story he can weave in under 6 minutes. This might be my favorite Colter song. I feel like I’m in a Louie L’Amour novel every time I hear it.
I'll tell you, driving through the desert with no one around and during this winter storm that hit near here, it was eerie listening to this music. It doesn't always snow in the desert but when it does, it snows a lot. I remember sitting outside too, out in the middle of nowhere really and listening to his music. You get transported to another time, a more simple time. I started thinking of the railroads, the trains that no longer ran, all the folk that came before me on the ground I stood and traveled on. Good music paints the best pictures ever. But it also complements your life and travels, enjoying the beautiful scenery. Colter's music is just that.
Admiring greatness is the most masculine thing we can do in life, great carpenter builds, ranch hand feeds, and some pluck a six string portal to our souls.
This is hands down my favorite song from Colter Wall and that's saying something cause all of his songs are great. He's the best country/cowboy singer today
I love this tale and this song, Colter is a natural Western story teller, the whole tale is complete as it comes full circle, master songwriting right here
Having lived, worked, fought fire and hunted in many of the places this song passes through, I still feel connected to that wonderful land. Thank you Colter.
Just discovered Mr wall. Never listened too country music before. So feel lucky that I get too listen to so many great tunes. That just keep getting better.
Man me too. I went to a record store show. At the end he asked “what do y’all want to hear?” I said Bald Butte. He said man that songs like 5 minutes long then played something else.
This is my favorite Colter Wall song so far. It has the lyrical greatness of Sting's "I hung my head" but because of his deep register reminds me of how Johnny Cash covered it. Regardless, truly a great song. No fat on it, from wire to wire, an original and very well done story song.
This mofo has had me enthralled for years. Finally commenting. This is the best country ive heard for a long time. How TF it cane from Canada is beyond me anf makes me cry for American country music. God bless you Colter please keep going like i know you have. I'll keep buying every song, album and EP you put out.
I absolutely love music that tells a story like this... Kenny Rogers would be proud! Can you imagine Colter singing "Coward of the county"? I get chills just thinking about it...
This is such an expansive, yet sparse, song. Its wonderful! Leaves your imagination space to breathe. Love this guy. He and Billy Strings should tour. They can call it the "Toying With Your Emotions Tour", lol.
Kate mcCannon and snake mountain blues is the best songs in the world in the history of songs! All of colter walls music is excellent but those two songs will forever be my favorite!
“Henry sat there laughing up his blood” I love that line. It says a lot. He knew his life would would end with hot lead tearing through his body. I imagine a feeling of relief in his death, and that line perfectly portrays his content, anger, and relief in his death. Such a beautiful line
I'm fairly certain he meant literally laughing. If I had to envision it that laughing would involve coughing too. It paints a sardonically comedic image. (comedy in the tragic sense. Think Greek) @@WOODALLY
great sense of history in addition to the song writing and performance much like the novel "Cold Mountain" the book not the Movie Bald Butte and the river Wapiti are part of my lore much like Grand Father Colter is my spirit animal (something for a 70 year old to say about a 20 something)
I can not explain how much I respect this young man amazing talent. But my true respect comes from not being sucked into the music industry that would have him being the next country sensation who sings about being a farm hand while there boots cost 3 grand. It's amazing story telling about things that matter not who you are endorsed by and if there's a controversial figure on your beer can

Lol no shit on that
Colter Wall, the phone book sessions. Coming soon.
🙌
It would be a short concert they are small books now.
Colter Wall is what modern country music should be.
Amen
Colters music ain't country.

You are correct. This song is incredible
It's an instant classic
I always thought it’d make a awesome movie. It’s my favorite colter song too.

It’s definitely one of his absolute best written. It’s an incredibly vivid story. And the details and usage of words leaves you speechless.

Fitting that this kid is from Saskatchewan
God bless. God speed to that frontier. Hope your family rests in Christ and peaceful forevermore.

Those two folks who disliked this video are very likely to be relatives of the McCannon family.
They can catch 3 rounds too!
Them damn Mcannons are no good I tell ya
how grumpy can you be not liking this!
Good one 😂😂😂
Nice reference to the CWMU (Colter Wall Musical Universe)
This young man is bringing country back all by himself. Real country. Real stories. A true artist.
his voice and words draw so much attention people rarely mention that he’s an amazing guitarist
I think about this so often. I'm a session guitarist and I can't play many of his songs. It's incredible how he plays them while singing.
I don't know what it is but your comment kind of enlightened me about who colter wall reminds me of. Ralph Stanley. Not the music style, but the power his story telling has.
Every time I hear this song it’s like a movie playing in my head.
Its a great song

This song chokes me up sometimes man..
They hit the dirt...he reveled in the sound...epic.
whole song is high level story telling and poetry
Like a holiday in his music
Man! I am a cattle farmer and have longed for a new musician who sings good cowboy music. Colt does it and does it superbly! This guy rocks!!!
Cowboy music.. u got it not country
I think all of these sessions are better than the album versions...way better.
I can’t agree with you. Some of these are better like Kate McCannon but this version is missing a riff that I like. It’s still a great song.
Agreed, He is way better live. After the studio and recording people put their 2 cents in they ruin him a bit. I bought some cds and didn't like them so I still listen to the sessions.
I feel the same way but Colter doesn’t like the Sessions stuff. He says it makes him cringe w how forced the vocals are.
These sessions need a physical release on cd/vinyl. Outstanding
This version, of this song, is one of the greatest acoustic songs ever. Period.
I’ve often thought how awesome this would be to make a short film from this story.
This is an instant modern classic cowboy epic. Wall at his best.
M. D. 100% agree. The first time I heard it, it became my all time favorite song.
Son, come to Fitzgerald’s Chicago.
Wait till he gets older those will be instant hits

I hear a little more Ian Tyson than Prine.
I do hear J Prine in the guitar an the words are good but there will never be another JOHN PRINE. COLTER might get close

That switch to first person after 3:07 makes the whole part so much more intimate. Colter's storytelling is just too good.
He does this in a few other songs and it just shows his story telling skills are so high level
