I do believe the "complement" factor is rather overblown in the fragrance community. Many reviews grossly exaggerate or embellish the performance. Especially when they ask people what they think.
Are there some scents that get unsolicited complements. Yep. Vast majority don't. Just buy the scents you love.

General rule to determine if it's good: if you hug somebody you know and they compliment you = thumbs up. If you're in the gym and people have no issue training next to you = you're not offending anyone. That's literally it. I've had just one person ever walk up to me and compliment me randomly in my life, it was about a pair of shoes. This probably varies from country to country, but in the UK nobody is walking up to you and randomly saying you smell good 😂 Maybe in a night club, but I hate clubbing as it is.

Oh great video! Thank you. Keep them coming. Really appreciate your hard work to bring us these videos.
Perhaps “contextual relevance” is another key factor. Context is deeper than just saying “place”, though that’s a context, but time of day, the culture you reside in, the function you’re performing ... Is the smell familiar or socially acceptability to your circle? Not every compliment grabbing fragrance will grab you the same attention in every part of the world. One man’s bergamot is another man’s oud. Though there are some universal truths, even Aventus isn’t loved by all.
Whilst clean, sweet, balanced and solid performing fragrances are great no doubt, in the boudoir, something thats closer to the skin, and often less clean might get more of the right attention and yes a compliment.
Attention whores (thank you social media for harvesting that) love compliments, likes etc .... But just like any art form, the compliment getters are often not very exciting to the trained nose. That’s probably why you like Machinedrum ... and probably why the greatest art forms are the hero’s in the shadows, far away from the limelight.

Compliments are bound to the culture you are in. It seems Americans always give compliments (or Americans are lying). In more down to earth countries you won’t get compliments or very few. Also the people who give compliments are people that know you very well such as your family. These are things reviewers not always tell ;)

I feel awkward if I go around projecting like a beast. I can hear people thinking what's up with this guy? The best scents for me is something I feel comfortable wearing that people can get a whiff of now and then. I think in the real world most men don't wear scents unless it's a special occasion, and if you do, you will come across as a bit weird.
I think the compliments depends on which culture and demographic you live in. For some it's natural for others it's absolutely not. What I have experienced is that wearing a nice fragrance can make other people smile more, open up more and be friendlier, even though they don't say anything.

This is an awsome video you summed this topic up perfectly the only things which you didnt mention, which i believe are the way you present yourself, if you seem like an approachable person and have a positive attitude makes it easier for people to compliment you compared to if you are cold and abrupt also the people around you must be appreciate fragrance to a degree, an example i work as a mechanic and no one in my work place is really into fragrances some of them dont even wear them at all im lucky if i get a compliment once a month at work but i know i smell good and somtimes that is enough to know that you smell good and wear them for your own enjoyment 👍

My wife of 25 years met me when I didn't wear any fragrance at all and we moved in together just a few weeks later. I didn't wear fragrance for the first 15 years we were together and we were happy as clams. Nor did I wear fragrances in any of my other longer term relationships and had no problem attracting people. It's not fragrance that gets you attraction, dates, etc. it's YOU!!! I totally agree with The Fragrance Apprentice in that if you take a shower and are fun to be around and treat people right and with respect, you'll have no trouble. We wife and I now do smell tests in the morning to test out the new samples I get and it's a fun tradition of ours but only in the last 8 years. But even if I only showered and brushed my teeth (and sometimes even not then) she loves me for who I am. Be the best you you can be and don't worry about what, if any fragrance you're wearing. If you do wear anything, do it for you (but still be aware of those around you so you don't offend people).

It all depends on your surroundings in regards to receiving compliments. If you live in London, you aint gonna get any compliments even if you're wearing a superb perfume. Because some people are odd in the city even if you smell a great fragrance and ask some people what they're wearing in my experience they gaze at you with an air of discomfort. As if you asked what kind of underwear they're wearing. I no longer care about compliments i wear perfumes for me because i enjoy it.

I wear fragrances because I love their scent for my pleasure and enjoyment and I don't give a damn what other people say. And since my most loved fragrances are of the animalistic oud variety, the vast mass of people will pull up their noses because they find them disgusting. That translates into zero compliments and it suits me just fine....

I 100% agree about the balance between light and dark. I like Armani's Code Ultimate (only dark), and Givenchy's Gentleman (only bright), but never received compliments when wearing them on their own. Then I combined the two, and the combination is the most consistently complimented fragrance that I wear.

When i first entered into fragrance game to look for good fragrances after getting bored from my Acqua di gio and CK one, i was kind of surprised to see videos like ‘top 10 most complimented fragrances’ on almost every youtube channel and i thought that those videos were totally unnecessary and made no sense to me, because i never thought of wearing fragrance to please other people or to get attention. Wearing a fragrance out of the two i had was just the last step of me dressing well, which gave me that confidence to get on with the day and do my best. For this reason i never really knew anything about the projection and longevity of the perfumes. When i entered the fragcom i found it to be a totally different world with a mix of all types of people wanting different things. We start our journey from channels like jeremy fragrances and end up on channels like the fragrance apprentice when we start understanding the depth of the fragrances and art behind it. Thanks for being so passionate about fragrances man and for such amazing content!!

Here's my view. If you're into fragrances like this community at maybe an absurd level, then sure compliments are great. It's also nice for anyone who wears fragrances in general. Why wouldn't people like a compliment... However, I believe compliments on a scent are kind of trivial. We shouldn't be caring to a weird extreme about people complimenting our scent..

Most fragrance channels are just reviews but you are bringing some actual education to the table - fantastic! Keep it coming!
Just another note on why folk might not be getting compliments - there's an idea that complimenting someone on their fragrance means you are coming on to them. I would not feel comfortable complimenting a random man on his fragrance in a bar/ club because you never know if they will just say 'Thanks! It's xyz!' or spend the night following you around being a bit of a creep.
And to any men feeling deflated because they like notes that fragrance reviewers often say women hate (leather, oud, smokey notes, dirt, oud, tobacco) - some of us would rather that than some light citrus concoction on a man. Some of us wear things like 'Black Afgano' ourselves :) So wear what you like!

Really interesting video . But I do ha e a counter experience , in general, to what’s stated here . I’ve always got the most consistent compliments ( 5-10 times , closer to five to be honest )
With quite masculine “classic” style scent .
For example , I got more compliments wearing Azzaro pour homme than any other ,
was thinking that isn’t clean , but I guess there is a soapy cleanness to it , still , strange .
That would be followed by Kouros (you heard me !) and had more than one person say it’s “so clean and sweet” !?
It just doesn’t make sense George !
Fahrenheit Absolute , terre d’ Hermes and eau sauvage parfum . And a pp clone of Viking (forgive me )
I’m not particularly masculine . I’m a pretty tall big (see quite fat , I carry it well) and beardy . But not in personality.
I guess it takes all sorts .
Not actually trying to prove anything you said wrong , I defer to you , just a slight testimony to the ‘exceptions to the rule’ you talked of .
I have found over the years of being into perfum my desire for compliments has waned .
.....saying that I recently bought Pure Malt
(I have less sweet scents also , tbf) had never smelt it before , and if I don’t get some compliments when I wear that through autumn and winter
    I’ll be f*^•king gutted I don’t mind tellin ya x

It depends so much where you go in this world as to what people like. Travel around places like the mid East, Pakistan, India etc, people are used to big bold woody masculine smells. In Europe they like it clean. Climate and culture make a big difference. The sweet frags that the west seem to like don't seem to be as popular further afield

Complete bs video. No, fragrances don't get you compliments they get you attention. No 20 minute video needed. If you never talk to people you are not likely to get into many conversations. In the same way if you apply a scent to you body it will enter peoples' noses and if they are ALREADY interested in YOU, they will use it as a way to approach you. The same is true for glasses, watches, clothes, shoes, cars, tattoos, facial hair, haircuts, and pretty much anything else you can possibly wear.

If you smell great, trust me, people are noticing, but not saying. After 2 months of getting to know my colleagues from an old job, they really gravitated towards how I smelt and collectively at one point said ''you smell amazing/you smell lovely/what are you wearing'' (I was wearing Terre D'hermes at that time). I think it's important to work with a fragrance, stick to it and ofc the most important thing is hygiene.

Initially I just wanted to get a couple of fragrances to up my game and then fell in love with the hobbie, so this was great. I did like the complement factor at first, but I also found that I would complement people not because I liked their fragrance but because I wanted to find out what they were wearing. Sometimes it was because I didn’t like it. Being honest with myself made me realize that complements might not be all that they’re cracked up to be.

This is my official compliment to you George on Espresso Royale! Love coffee in all its forms, but especially in fragrances. I'm sure there are other uber coffee lovers out there that would appreciate it too. Very true about your criteria. And regarding compliments, I think it's less about the scent than it is about the person giving them. Excluding unconscious exclamations, in the end, someone needs to make a decision to say something. And who's getting the compliment anyhow? The fragrance? The body? The room in which it's sprayed? Really makes you think about the complexities involved in person-to-person communication.

How would you describe Allure Homme Sport on the "masculine to feminine" and "classy to rugged" spectrum? Thinking of getting it just not sure if it would suit me

Its been my signature for years and it works great. To make it short, it smells like a powdery lemon/orange soda/popsicle with some smooth tonka in the back. The opening might be somewhat harsh when you smell it for the first time, peppery.. but it lasts only 10-20mins so you can get over it. I remember back in the day walking past by two girls while wearing it, both stopped walking and where questioning themselves what that good smell was haha

Great video, as always *SMILE* I do not wear fragrances for compliments, but for my own enjoyment and just in case someone wants to give me a hug! Anyway, I think the country / climate, can also pay play a part. My fragrance journey started a 3 years ago and have only gotten 1-2 compliments from people that could smell me close by (in Denmark). But, 15 years ago, when the Chanel Allure Homme Sport came out, I was in Venezuela working and the compliments came easy (1-3 per day). That was nice and a boosted my fragile ego a bit - made me less shy *smile* But, I agree, fragrance is only 10% of the deal.

The only aspect this video does not take into account is age & maybe that's because your probably in your 20s. Girls 18 - mid/late 20s typically like sweet stuff. Women over 30 are not typically fans of the sweet aspect in my experience. Good video though for the younger 18-25yr old crowd. 👍

I agree. I am definitely over 30, and l don't like sweet perfumes on a men, they will be nice, but not attractive or sexy. For me it's more attractive a dark and masculine scent, but not old fashioned.

trust me when i say this, a lot of reviewers as well as normies keep lying about compliments or overreact to it just as a way to justify the purchase. I have tons of fragrances, i am considered a not a bad looking guy and even so compliments from strangers are rare, family members will occasionally compliment you same for co-workers but if you are the only one wearing fragrances they'll be mostlikely used to it. It's like telling a girl everyday that she looks beautiful.. i mean it would get dull for both sides wouldn't it?

Why do people so desperately want compliments from fragrances? If you wear a nice shirt or trousers or shoes you aren’t disappointed if you’re not complimented on your good taste, so that you try something else instead.
Anyway, if that’s what someone wants, I’d pretty much agree with your ideas on how to get a compliment. I’d probably just simplify it to: wear something pleasant that projects. But I disagree on the choice of Eau extreme, as that has absolutely lousy performance, in my experience. Cheers 🙏🏻

yea, I think longevity on fragrance reviews websites are useless...yea, okay, I can still smell this 12 hours later on my wrist, but if the PROJECTION is 2 hours, then who cares about longevity? I also agree that clean and simple gets compliments over "artistic" ones.

i aprove of your message.....me: co, i rock vintage 70- 80s scents myself, the memories, imo perfumes were ART back then....its liquid clothing, before designer scents were topnotch, no niche needed, and indeed too much scents lack performance these days.....my two scents.
