Great walk through of this fantastic record and a very unique way of reviewing the BBs albums when you isolate, highlight and play sections from certain songs. A must watch for us fans 👏👏👏
Brian was a goofy guy and could get to a high pitch, so if he was doing the laughing, i think that was him imitating a kid. I also think it’s viable that Al must have been the man saying “costs too much”. the baritone is very similar to what he sounds like, but more forced.
"Summer Means New Love"--I'm one of those who subscribes to the idea that great instrumentals should be left alone with no lyrics added. Don't paint a moustache on the Mona Lisa. There are some people, however, that feel that every song should have lyrics. Believe it or not, I think there was some British artist who actually recorded "Let's Go Away For Awhile" with lyrics! My sister tried to re-imagine "Summer Means New Love" with lyrics, and it sounded like a song a muppet would sing! It just falls flat when people do this! But again--I'm a big fan of Brian's instrumentals, and its amazing to me that no one in Hollywood ever asked him to write film scores, because of his prowess in writing and arranging great instrumentals!
Sorry to keep commenting, but hey…great content. 2 more things: Lol…a Beach Boys enjoyer on the spectrum…that’s like a day ending in “y” …it’s all good. Also…we wouldn’t have the Brian & “Real” Beach Boys renaissance without Melinda… they may have ended on the lowest of notes in the flower-print, county fair “Mikesploitation” era. THAT would have been a tragedy. RIP MELINDA. Love & Mercy.
I think the Girl From New York City could have been a minor hit with a different solo. The lick Carl plays throughout is cool, but it needed a less repetitive break. Still a great, undervalued album track.
Oh, I completely agree! It has a great hook and opens the album with a bang! I tell you, those guys at Capitol did not have very good ears, and this one was yet another one of their many misses. In my opinion, this track was one of the greatest album openers of all time!
@@Toobzilla You must be thinking of "The Little Girl I Once Knew". Now that one sounds like Pet Sounds, and probably should have been the lead single of that album, with Sloop John B on this album, as it sounds more like a "Summer Days" track and was recorded around the same time that album was released. The Girl from NYC, I think, stands on its own progressive merits apart from Summer Days or Pet Sounds. Its more like something they would revisit on Wild Honey
@@impalaman9707 No, I definitely have the right song, it's one of my favorites. what i may have is the wrong album, i haven't dived in to learn but, i thought they mentioned LHRW on this video?.. anyway, thanks for the input.
I’ve been so looking forward to this one!! Similar to you, Matthew, this album holds a very special place in my heart and could very well be my favorite Beach Boys record. Thank you both for this incredible show.
When I was 10 or so, back in the mid 90's, we had an old piano in the house that my younger sister was using for lessons. We were not a family deep into music but for sure music of the 60s, 70s and 80s were always playing on the kitchen radio. I was playing around on the piano and stumbled upon a riff: C, E, F, E, and repeat. "Dad, what is this? I recognise it.". He brought out a beat-up LP that he'd had since the 70's called "The Beach Boys 20 Golden Greats" - the only album he had by the band. The song: The I Kissed Her. Almost 30 years later and there isn't a single week that goes by without me playing at least one of their albums. They've been there during my teens, my 20's, and into my 30's, and now I'm elated to see my baby boy smile when I play this glorious music (his favourite seems to be Catch a Wave currently). Then I Kissed Her is a cover, but I owe a lot to that song. So the album that this song calls home is the most precious to me. I thank you guys so much for covering this album and for all the insights you give (I learn so much new on every episode). It's such a pleasure. May I suggest a Patreon page for your supporters to donate.
Thank you so very much!! Wow - love the "feel" of the story -- and thank you for participating and bringing your baby boy into the fold :)))) We did explore the patreon option, but had no response so we decided to go "direct" - might be time to take another look, though Thanks again :)))
Speaking of fiddle, Fred “I’m 2024 Jack Rieley” Vail is releasing an album of “star studded” country songs with T Bone Burnett that apparently has a lot of “Brian adjacent” vault material from the Sunflower era. Word is they will not be calling it Stars and Stripes Vol 2….
Wow, I never noticed that the chorus of California Girls was just a I ii descending by a whole tone. That makes so much more sense. I was trying to conceptualise those chords all in the key of B which boggles the mind a bit! Thank you for your insights!
Thanks again, boys, for helpin’ to keep the summer alive. One request: Please do a segment on the Brian Wilson/ Andy Paley recording sessions. I think right now Brian could use some collaboration with Andy, a great guy ( check out “Paley Brothers Complete Recordings.”) Especially given the sad passing of his wife. Bless you all.
"You're So Good To Me"--for me, this was one of the most interesting songs on the album. First of all, the guitar sound. The closest I can remember to hearing this same guitar sound again was years later, James Honeyman-Scott from the Pretenders (who ironically enough, deputised for Carl on one of the Beach Boys tours in 1981) would run his Rickenbacker through a Leslie to get that same organ sound on "Message Of Love". Second--the vocals. Brian had two different voices in the 60s. His soft and tender voice, and his loud and obnoxious voice--and sometimes, he uses both---just like he would do a year later on Pet Sounds with "I'm Waiting For the Day". But he sounds like a completely different person when he is singing in his loud, obnoxious voice! And I'm not so sure he wasn't singing in his loud, obnoxious voice here, because he imagined this was the way he would have had Dennis singing it? (and even there, its hard to imagine Dennis singing the song like Brian did here!)
Matthew I wish we could meet in real life. I am really into Mandolin history and alternate fiddle tunings on the mandolin. And I am a huge Beach Boy fan. And I'm working on a book about Child Ballads and Folk Tunes. I bet we would have soooooo much to talk about!
let him run wild is ground breaking. the chorus breakdown that leads into "i guess you know i waited for you guurrrl" is a great chordal progression that hooks you. instantly. i will admit brians vocal is my least fav part.

@@beachboyshangout +1 from the gorilla.
I'd like to see you do an episode where you just discussed Carl's guitar work. Albums, live, best performances, limitations, everything.
Wow -thats a great idea, Jason
This is like pure intravenous crack for someone like me.
you made my day!!
Thank you Matthew & Adam - love your passion and perspectives on all of your Beach Boys Podcasts. Looking forward to the 'Party' Podcast!!
Michael, thank YOU! - you are really appreciated and we are grateful :))
I feel like this podcast was tailor made for me. Great stuff.
thank you!!
I always assumed the little “is it real?” voice on Amusement Parks USA was Marilyn
good call - I can certainly buy into that :)

I feel like if you’re watching this, you know that iconic “Kyaliffornia” is Bruce already. Haha.
I will add he’s also got the iconic “Gayad Onlee Nose” He really showed up early on…

Melinda and Brian's relationship is outlined in the beautiful movie "Love and Mercy" starring Elizabeth Banks and John Cusack.

First off: great episode! Matt, that 1-2-1-5 bass riff is straight outta Be My Baby. Brian’s favorite. He uses the line in Barbara Ann also.
