Agreed. The organ triplets really make the song for me. They should have made that the LEAD single for the upcoming "Pet Sounds" album and put out "Sloop John B" as a single after "Summer Days", as it fit more with that imagery than Pet Sounds. Capitol really missed the mark getting behind "Barbara Ann" instead. They should have listened to the opinion of one of their own artists, John Lennon---he RAVED about the song, and he has oood taste. Also agree about the Fendertones. Their harmonies on that song were brilliant, especially the one guy singing the falsetto---he was really doing Brian Wilson well
It wasn't until I got the Party album in high school that I really began to understand the context of "Barbara Ann". It was never supposed to be made a serious single, until Capitol edited and made it one. It was just a throwaway, just one of the songs the Boys did for the party. And when you hear it in the context of the album, you hear them end the song doing it with a "broadway" production ending and everything. It was never supposed to be taken seriously. And now thanks to Capitol pushing it as a hit, they're obliged to perform it every time they play!
Never been a fan of the song, and it bugs me that this is one of their most popular. It's not even top 5 on the Party album. Right down there with Hound Dog being in Elvis' top 3.
@@paladin1726 I agree 100 percent. It stole all the glory away from "The Little Girl I Once Knew" that song should have received! In fact, that should have been the lead single for the upcoming Pet Sounds album!
There's No Other Like My Baby and Mountain of Love are my favorites from this. Almost every time I saw the Beach Boys in concert in the '70s, Barbara Ann was the last song played . It was one of many crowd favorites. As usual, I really enjoyed this video.
Loved the episode! I never realized that was Carl saying “thanks, Dean” at the end of Barbara Ann, I always thought that was Dennis. Thanks for your amazing work, guys, I can’t get enough of this podcast.
Here we go again... hahaha - I read somewhere it was Carl long ago but your comment jogged a memory so I went and listened and I think it is either Dennis or someone else - LOL! thank you for listening and engaging on a regular basis - it means a lot :)))
I quite like the fact that they performed "I Get Around" and "Little Deuce Coupe" as a joke. It showed to me that they could make fun of their own songs and not take themselves too seriously. I thought of it as them saying, "okay, this old stuff was kid stuff---we're going to start doing REALLY serious music going into 1966"
You guys are out of control!!! I'm trying to catch up on your parties, guests and series reviews. I can't take notes fast enough!!! Now... Another Hartz showed up!!!!!!
Steve Howe has his famous piece, The Clasp, on his Martin four-stringed tenor guitar. It's a great country/swing/blues tune that I've seen him play with such passion. Joel
Matt, I had no idea that you played with Asleep at the Wheel. That's awesome! I've only got the album they recorded with one of my all-time favorite musician/singer/songwriter extroardinaire, Willie Nelson. I bought it over ten years ago at Walmart, of all places. On this cd they back Willie. I think that there a number of cuts on here which are instrumentals that feature great ensemble playing from the band and individually Willie. I don't have it anywhere near me so I don't know the title of the album so all I can do is to tell the people out there that they should try to hear it. Joel
Thank you Matthew, Adam, & John for another outstanding Beach Boys podcast! I am entertained and learn new information on every podcast you have done. My first encounter with Party was hearing "Barbara Ann" on the radio. I enjoyed the song but what/why was I hearing extra voices & sounds. My small Iowa farm town record store had the 45 but not the lp. A week later the album showed up and I listened to it over and over to appreciate what I was hearing on My Sears record player. Years later I also fell in love with the "Ruby Baby" outtake on the Good Vibrations box set, which I still listen too. The recent Unplugged Party CD is also fantastic.
I've read a handful of books and bios on the Beach Boys, but Matthew always provides insights and stories on the Beach Boys I've never heard or read elsewhere. There's a best seller book waiting to be written if Matthew's ever inclined. Devoted to You is my favorite on the album. Love the way Brian and Mike's voices complement each other on the tune.
Great episode. You know, Herb Alpert’s Taste of Honey also had notable dead air, yet was a massive radio hit and seller, earlier in 1965. Would be interested if you have any further comment on Little Girl - which I think is my favorite BB’s single of all.
I read once one reason the dead air is so off putting on is because if you try to count it out, it’s hard to hard to know when to start singing again (in reference to 1 2 3 4), Pardon my comment is off base to the Party album but the dead air Herb Albert comment reminded me
Fun fact: in 87, the Beach rerecorded Barbara Ann as "Here Come the Cubs" to be the Cubs' theme song for that season (not sure how long it stayed in place). Search it up. it's real funny in my opinion, and a bit corny.
Little Girl I Once Knew is one of my favorite singles of theirs. Fendertones do a great cover of it.

Ditto and Agreed!
Agree 100% with your remarks!

Wow!! Thank you so much :) I'll pass that on to John (gonna see him at my nieces basketball game in a few :))

Your teeth reference was on “you’ve got to hide your love away.” After the song is over Mike is is singing “hey somebody hid my teeth away.”
thank you :)

Thank you so much, Michael, for all :))) love hearing "bits" of your BB story too!
Amazing podcast! Love listening to Matthew. He's really an expert in BB's matters...
Wow! thank you :)))

thank you so much!! Yes - I think the next episode will be a stand alone episode on "Little Girl" -- I love it too! (I know - predictable :))

Never let Mike improv.

very cool! thanks for the tip :)
