Really good insight for someone in this day hearing Beatles 1st time! So many sounds today are high energy, people miss how intense that opening chord and verse were on the title track when it came on the radio. It was game changing, opening doors for other ‘60s bands to not hold back. I was 6 when they hit the US and they brought me joy and excitement missing in my life, and are why I became a musician and guitar teacher for my living. By the way, if you knew how lame most top 40 was before they hit…’nuff said.

‘Things We Said Today’ is in my top 10 favorite Beatles’ songs. Some of Paul’s lesser known songs are the gems for me, and they sneakily get darker as the relationship with his girlfriend at the time changed (more to come.) Also, Paul and John may have lead certain songs but they wrote most songs together and sang a lot of them together. For instance, on the title song, that’s Paul and John singing together. And honestly, all 3 harmonize in most songs. However, Paul was the driving force, the arranger, and the work horse of the group. He’s a genius. And he has one of the best male voices ever - with a 5 octave range. You should really watch the movie, ‘A Hard Day’s Night!’ So good!

Really this is John's first solo album, writing 10 of the 13 tracks (He gave 'Happy Just To Dance' to George to sing). When you listen to Beatles albums be aware that they rarely included any of their singles on them. So 'With The Beatles' could have quite easily included 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', 'This Boy', 'She Loves You', 'I'll Get You' and feasibly even 'From Me To You', which would have made it a powerhouse of an album. Those fairly new to The Beatles need to include 'Past Masters Vols 1 & 2' in their listening experience to pick up all the non-album singles they released over their recording career. Great reaction, dude.

Hijacking this comment to suggest listening to the Past Masters tracks in batches according to their release date, similar to how this creator did her Beatles reactions: th-cam.com/video/vCT-PqPTNno/w-d-xo.html
Listening to those songs in context can give you a better understanding of how the band developed musically over the years. 👍

John and Paul were still writing together a lot in this period so John definitely can't take all the writing credit.

Hey man! I have to say that your critiques are fascinating. Your vulnerability comes through and it is what is more important when you discover new art. You're opening yourself to an artist reaching you, and it's beautiful to listen to. I feel like I met a great human being in the last month. An artist of the musical appreciation. And probably a great artist at other things. Thanks for that.
Hope everything's gonna be okay for you!

Yeah, man, i've really come to dig his straight-up no BS perspectives. I just wish the snippets of him actually reacting to the music were a bit longer, and yes i'm too a hypocrite cos i feel too time-constrained to go over to his or anyone's patreon, lol!

Keep in mind, these songs were all written by the Beatles and recorded as the soundtrack for their first feature film, A Hard Day’s Night, which was SO good, that the American film Institute rated it in the top 100 films of all time! Steven Spielberg (Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, etc.) said they studied A Hard Day’s Night film’s cinematography in film school. You should react to that film!

I thought I had subbed already but I have now. Starting to love the way you love them. Their music looms large in my funeral rites. We got it down to 3 or, as my daughter says, we'll be there all day.
I'm being carried in to King Curtis' live version of "Whiter Shade of Pale" then it's Beatles x 3 mingled in. The after party (or "wake" if you prefer) is going to be awesome, all welcome, East Coast of England. Not yet though......

You might enjoy these songs more if you watch the 'A hard days night' film, which featured a lot of these tracks. It was scripted but had a documentary feel to it and the dialogue feels authentic to their individual characters. The way the film was shot and edited involves a lot of ground breaking styles in presenting a pop act, and for those, like me, who didn't get to see them live, it was the next best thing seeing them on a big cinema screen. When they emptied out the audience we just slumped down in our seats while the fans were ushered in for the next showing, so we watched it through twice, not sure how we got away with it. Don't have big expectations for their 4th album, as 'Beatles for sale' is exactly like the situation they were in for 'With The Beatles', just not enough time to write all new material. In 1964 they did the motion picture as well as two albums, plus additional singles, and more demands for live appearances and interviews, all in the same year. So 'Beatles for sale' had to be filled with more covers once again. The heavy toll on the band shows in a less upbeat tone and is very clear on their faces on the album cover.

There was nobody, and I mean nobody that could touch them by late '62. They had over 400 songs in their repertoire, even then they were devouring all the different styles they could. They never rested on their laurels. Rory Storm and the Hurricanes were a good show to see back then, but once the Beatles took the stage you could feel the magic and energy shift.
