I would not go out in conditions like that, even if I was with a seasoned captain. Love the videos. Can't wait to move to Florida and get a nice 52' Mystic or Midnight Express. Keep up the great work.
The young men on the mystery boat handle the small craft really well considering the conditions, I’m impressed! I’m not impressed, however, the fact, as small as that is, that nobody had their PFD on.
ASs a sailor, if I were to buy a powerboat, It would have to be something like the Insetta. The powercats make it look so easy compared to many monohull boats. Plus I like the spread apart position of the engines for better maneuvering.
Been out in worse than that in a 15-foot tinny. Waves breaking over the cuddy cabin, two hardened commercial fishermen holding onto the grab rails like a pair of girls :)
The Rafnar and the big cats were truly impressive. The Rafner in particular handled the waves very well for its size- a seaworthy design. The lack of safety gear, harnesses, and general novice behavior of crew and passengers in practically all vessels was rather questionable…. I would say there is big mindset difference between sailors and power boaters in heavy weather.
A three foot chop seems to test the captain before the boat. Most of the inlet videos in s Florida are sea trials. Basically testing the boat on a short run. The buyer is not normally on the boat for these mishaps haha
That was a sea trial day at FLIBS. I was on the 43 Front Runner that day actually for this test. Incredible ride, not a squeak or rattle and we were doing 40+ knots for a while out there. Wet day though. You can't escape spray when it's blowing like that.
First boat is seemingly an Atlantique 40, not an 140. Perhaps you mistyped the description or misread the "q" in "atlantique" as a "1" before the "40"? Anyway, they did ok considering the conditions and the boat, I guess. Passable.
Why do people think that this is dangerous.. you are moving around in a boat while there is a bit of heavy weather around... what do you expect, she's not flat water.
It's an inlet and the telephoto lens and low angle makes it worse. Also the wave period is shorter in the area than off CA. The swells are actually bigger there (it's why you get to surf there without a storm lol). The outflow of the river, especially with an incoming tide and moving sandbars makes for some pretty mixed up water especially if it's an east wind. Also the water is extremely shallow compared to where you are at. Water offshore tends to be a lot better. Jupiter is actually worse than haulover. I grew up and started boating in the south bay area and live in Florida now so I've experienced both. Nothing quite like trapezing a hobie 16 and jumping swells (fun but extremely stupid I admit lol)
It’s interesting to compare hull designs and how they ride. Nice video capture. Now as for the captains mind set in conditions that surely can be attained from weather and buoys reports that why bother warming up the engine.
