Jeff, a trick I learned when assembling something under tension is to use a gallon food storage baggie. You can still see everything and you can cut a hole in another side if you need to insert both hands and tape or zip the ends shut for extra security and when things pop around they are auto-captured. I've worked on a couple of auto-knives, trigger springs, anything with detent springs, and even small scale springs that fling about 100 feet if left without a capture device.
Great idea! I had a guide spring for a Glock 43 that flew off somewhere to someplace...I never found it.
@@OnAirVoice The whole guide spring? Did it go to some alternate dimension? Though it does feel like springs have that ability. First revolver I opened a tiny spring went flying, miraculously I found it.
Depending on floor surface I’ve had great luck finding small parts with magnets
I’m going through that now I waited a month for a knife blade, I learn my lesson friend I used to by omega Springs online like the ones you got and a very nice there stiffer,Then I learned to make them out of 22 gauge memory wire so for three dollars I can make about 50 pairs of springs maybe more and that’s what I’ve been using a work beautiful

I remember when I did this and my experience was similarly frustrating. But, like you, I finally got it done and felt like I actually learned some useful stuff in the process. But more than anything else, I learned that next time, I'll just send it back to Benchmade!

My spring on my 940 broke after 18 years & it broke because I dropped it on concrete with flinging force (accidently) and it landed perfectly on the very tip! The tip didn't even have a scratch!

I don't know why people have such anxiety about broken omega springs. I've had 1 break on my old 2001 mini grip once and it didn't affect the lock in any way at all. I bent a new spring, popped it in, done! I find it reassuring having something which i can literally fabricate myself in a matter of minutes. If they broke once a year (which they won't) would be totally worth it just for the strength, ease of use , speed of deployment and fidget factor of the Axis lock. Like having a Ferrari that you can maintain yourself for peanuts. What's not to love?!
I have the 940-1 it is a great knife design light weight and great for many edc tasks

Hi Jeff, I just sent my Mini Grip back to Benchmade. My springs were also broken and I asked if they would ship me the springs and they would not. So I sent it up to them. I am currently waiting to hear back from them to let me know if I have to pay for any services, I requested blade centering which the blade was never centered when I got it and a black thumbstud instead of a silver one and a pocket clip. Hopefully I hear from them soon but in the meantime I have plenty of other blades to carry. Keep up the videos and good work!

This right here is why in the great "axis vs compression" lock debate the comp lock wins imo. Yes I know there's going to be someone that says they've had their 940 for 22 years and nothing broke. I have a bugout that broke after 5-6 months of rotated carry, probably 30 days of actual carry. Now every axis lock knife I have (11 total) feels like it's on a count down every time I open and close it. The same goes for assisted knives, I've had a few of those springs break.

You know what’s strange, I’ve done a bit of looking around and haven’t seen really any models other than the 940 variants and the Bugout variants springs breaking. I’ve got several mini-Griptillians and one is from my grandpa who used it for 6 years or so and still feels fine and not like it’s going to break.

Save time and avoid the possibility of losing it in the mail. I put a ganzo spring in my 940, just bend em a bit because they can be really stiff but I've never had a ganzo spring break but I've had several benchmades break

Jeff, if I received a used/broken Benchmade Osborne 940 I would have cleaned the knife a lot better after disassembling it as well as cleaning/polishing the phosphor bronze washers. Also, I would have properly oiled the pivot area/washers with nano oil before reassembly!!! I'm not sure what springs you bought/used in the repair, but there are after market springs for the Osborne 940 that are much better than Benchmade's omega springs.
There a company making pivot alignment tools for benchmades. There showed them on metal complex and Zacks stuffs channel. They looked super helpful

I was wondering how the axis lock springs looked after my Sanremu EL-02B started developing blade play when folded and overall lost most of tension on the lock. Looks like I worn it out by playing with the knife too much. And here I was hoping I found the right locking mechanism for me. Well, time to return to fixed blades
For all of it's niftyness, the axis lock seems like a pretty damn weak lock that would break without much trouble
Not unless you wildy flip the lock all day with any spring it will weaken if heated
Once the the two springs broke on my 940, I lost most of my trust in it. It's probably my fault because I fidget too much but that's one Achilles heel I will never get over with BM. I have more faith in my Spyderco Para 3 and or any other locking systems.
I hear this all the time but have never experienced it on my 5 axis lock knives. Not one spring breakage and have one that is over 10 years old.
@@m1henry I had one break just using it after 6 years of daily use but BM told me the original springs were weaker. I have the mini grip 501. They replaced them. Told my the put the updated springs. I cannot see any difference.
I literally never had one break...Ive used probably over 100 knives with them...
so i got the m4 version and it felt really gritty right out of the box and had a lot of lock stick so to took it apart and noticed a lot that could be better. the liners/housing for the axis lock has a rough surface so the edges of all of the holes are sharp to the touch and the rough surface adds to this almost like serrations so i polished the flat surfaces with a strop and inside the where the axis lock rides i had the perfect aluminum oxide 5000 grit sharper for sharpening blade serrations whic fit perfectly so i smoothed that out. i think with how rough that whole area is what causes these springs to wear out. but that wasn’t the worst of it. the hole for the pivot was so sharp and jagged that it was destroying my washers and the surface of the blade tang behind the washers had super aggressive machining lines but beyond that it was also very pitted. the surface that the other side of the washer rests against was also rough and the entire surface of the tang that the lock rides against was pitted and rough and the lock bar itself was rough. also the pivot itself is “D” shaped and the shoulders of the flat part of the “D” shape was rough because of machining lines. i polished all of that out and now it’s much smoother and zero lock stick…. i have two budget chinese axis style knives each cost exactly $50 and neither have any of those issues but my american made $200 benchmade had zero quality control.

I like my Benchmade 940 a lot but is it so common that this springs just break? I got me some omega springs too. Better to have them and never use them instead of needing them and not have them. Great job Jeff. Keep the good work up and the best for you and your wife.
I’ve had a few axis lock knives and personally have never had a problem.... I’d say an omega spring failure is a pretty uncommon problem but it does happen once in a while
mine broke within a month of purchase. very disappointed. i feel like a shmuck for paying almost 200 for this knife.
I have had and owned several BM Knives over the years and luckily have never had an Omega Spring issue.
I'm wondering if they just had a big bad batch come in & didn't know it until it was too late?!?

I don't have the talent, which is why I just crc spray the gunk and relube, rather than disassembling.

Freaking hate when the springs go flying! LOL! Best to keep the knife under some kind of clear plastic covering while you’re inserting the springs to keep that happening.
I don't mind taking knives apart... Benchmade axis lock knives are the exception. Well any Benchmade really, those liner screws are so small. Though having very fine tweezers have helped.

I own 2 Benchmade axis lock knives, Bugout, mini grip. Had to send Bugout back 3 times, mini grip 1 and it’s broke again . I’m done with the axis lock and Benchmade. 2 great knives one big flaw ,omega spring.why Benchmade doesn’t fix this problem is because they give give 2 turds about the end user. Also end user is their QC. Despicable!!

Okay I'm new to Benchmade, u need help learning this stuff. On some models does the tail end of the Omega springs sit in a hole? I'm seeing these slip into a slot.

Did. you find out wether or not yours is fake? I started to think, that mine is Fake too, because of the inner steel liners (they are the Same pattern like the one in the video 4:03 )
Easy to see how fidgeting 100 times a day can eventually wear that spring out and cause to snap in the middle

I was not mechanically inclined when I was young because no one taught me. I got a job in construction and learned how to be mechanically inclined. It's a skill that can be developed IMO.

Putting in the pivot screw is the most frustrating part on putting a axis lock knife back together.

I dont know it was from the previous owner but from what Ive heard it can happen under normal use, some people, flick the knives open and closed thousands of times for fun, lol...

mostly because that wasnt the purpose of the video I did lube it afterwards but it wasnt that dirty...I dont see much advantage to lube while its apart either...

It might be said this could void warranty. But I say go for it.
They basically say that so you don’t send them a knife in pieces.... I’ve taken apart BM knives and sent them back and they’ll accept them (kinda like their “only buy from authorized retailer” policy.... friend got his from eBay and BM took care of him fine) the reason why they have that policy is so you don’t go sending them a fake.... as long as it’s a genuine BM all in one piece you should be fine
@@shadowcastyt completely agree that’s why I said COULD void the warranty. I’ve taken them apart as well. The last one I did was a Bugout that a friend brought over in a ziplock bag because he couldn’t get it back together.
I would say try a pair of needle nose pliers.
Jeff when dealing with or modding BM Axis knives, to make life easy you need to pick up an aftermarket pivot alignment tool first off, that saves on reassembly time as well as stress. Second is a fun fact, and that is when it comes to Griptilians, the Omega Springs don't break as often if at all, compared to other models like the Bugout and others. Another trick that I learned when modding, is during reassembly, use froglube on the liners as well as springs. this leaves of protective film on both the liners as well as the springs themselves, enhancing their performance and lifespan...
Don't forget your 91% alcohol and then your Tuf Glide (in Jeff's case)😂

If you just take off one scale at a time and replace the spring, it tends to be easier. Well it is for me.
What I learned from this is if the springs on my 710 break to send it back to benchmade, lol.( otherwise i'll just have to ship them a busted knife with missing pieces)

I just called bm trying to get them to send me some and the crossbar, my mini bugout sticks but they said I would me to send it in. Not gonna do that

I think the only solution would be a thicker spring. All springs eventually fatigue and break, but it’s definitely more likely with a thin little spring like that that is doing a lot of work

It want I stripped 2 screws taking my 940 apart and they sent me replacement screws for the whole handle with 2 pocket clips and screws.. They just don't want u sending it a bag with the knife in peices

Such a lock with such a thin spring seems not reliable at long sight to me.
everythings reliable until its not, lol...
2 Things. 1. Put a film of oil between the blade and washers and they'll stick to the blade. 2. Don't take apart a LAWKS system unless you like migraines.
