I have this disease I was born 1 pound and 4 ounces, fought for my life and I had two eye surgeries because of this and my eye pressure is high and I’m scared that I might lose my vision one day. I’m 28 years old and I am so blessed to be here most of my vision is in my left eye, I don’t not get any kind of government assistance because I was denied ssi and I’m unemployed because of my condition it gets me down sometimes 😞 I learned Braille just in case my vision leaves me. My condition is not temporary its permanent and I been wearing glasses all my life and the way my vision is I can never wear contacts. I had surgery on both of my eyes. Thank you so much for listening to my story

    I have this condition!!!!!!!!
I was born at 24 weeks.
I had to have surgery for my detachment of retinas. I was lucky to even survive and not be completely blind or disabled. I'm a healthy 24 year old now. I have been wearing glasses since 4 months old. However, It's unclear weather I Can get my license to drive or not. Some specialists say I can but I'd have so many restrictions due to being impaired vision that it'd be very limiting. Others say no they wouldn't recommend it.

Adult with ROP, born in1952 weight was 3 lb 11 oz. born 6 weeks premature. in incubator with high oxygen for 2 months. Never saw out of left eye, cataract removed unsuccessful in that eye at age 2 and eye was removed at age 10 due to eye disease and pain. Right eye 20/400 but corrected to 20/200 with IOL implant after cataract surgery in my 30’s and also wear eye glasses. Have had posterior vitreous separation right before cataract surgery. Surgery was done due to part of the retina was going to detach. Have macular pucker, had dislocated lense and defective lense capsule with missing xonules. I also had double vision and astigmatism. Very nearsighted. Have oval shaped pupil. I have had Iritis but only once so far. Had orbital cellulitis this year in January which was very serious and scary to go through but 48 hours of IV antibiotic in hospital and oral antibiotics at home for 7 days got me through it without any complications. So grateful for the vision I have and thankful for the technology that is available for visually impaired and blind.
Thank you Dr. Bolin for the presentation.

    nice video,
but what happens is that when baby got oxygen this will downregulate the VEGF , and after that retina will be ischemic and will ask for more VEGF which will cause the problem

Interesting theory. However, that does not explain why we don’t see a similar pattern of retinopathy in older children and adults who receive aggressive oxygenation therapy. Here’s some of what we know, per UpToDate:
“Regulation of the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and other cytokines appear to contribute to both normal retinal vessel growth and abnormal vascular disruption and subsequent neovascularization. The mechanisms that determine whether initial disruption of normal angiogenesis in ROP will be followed by resumption of normal vascular development or progression of pathologic neovascularization are unknown.”
That said, intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy is being used as a second-line (and by some ophthalmologists, first-line) treatment for ROP.

Is laser treatment necessary for stage 0 zone 3 babies after the age of 14 months or 11 months corrected to prevent ROP from activation?
