  • The Boston Bruins made a big trade right before game 7, trading goalie Linus Ullmark, and we almost forgot about it in the after glow of seeing the Panthers raise the cup! That and more in today's NHL hockey video!

    The trade wasn't bad at all when you look that Ullmark had a NTC so he controlled that and he only has 1 year left on his deal. No team is going to give up a lot for a 1 year player. The reason why NJ got a better deal for Markstrom despite him being older and not as good as Ullmark is because Markstrom has 2 years left on his deal. Term means everything when trying to acquire a player. So you call it a horrible trade but you don't take everything into consideration, sure you mentioned it but you still said it was a horrible trade. What if they didn't trade him at all and let him go for nothing? That would be horrible. And it's not like he has lit it up in the playoffs anyway so big deal they traded away a good regular season goalie.

    Plus they don't have to look for a backup goalie while Bussi finishes honing his skills, Korpisalo ain't as bad as Ottawa's defense made him look, costs them much less than Ullmark, and Kastelic is exactly the type of strong bottom 6 forward they love to mold to their system.

      @Mike___Honcho 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you are wrong. the 25 pick was the Bs to begin with so for arguments sake, just forget about the 25 pick for bertuzzi. the Bs had him for one month only, so he never really was a likely guy to stay. that's why the red wings traded him. he wanted to be a free agent and don sweeney doesn't pay for free agents. he gives up all the draft picks, but then won't pay them to keep them. say that trade never happened. what you have left is ullmark, a recent vezina winner for korpisalo and kastelic. if the rangers gave up shesterkin for a bottom six forward and a questionable goalie, everyone in boston would be laughing. yes, i know you are going to say, " but, the Bs got a 25 pick also. " but, if you look at this as a two year sequence of offsetting trades for don sweeney, what sweeney got was one month of bertuzzi, korpisalo, and kastelic for ullmark.

    I really do think this is one that will look better for all parties in hindsight. I think Korpy at that cap hit, as a back-up, on a more defensively responsible team will be solid. The first is always good and Kastelic was born to be a Bruin. Like with Buffalo, Ullmark will show he's good even on a bad team, netting Ullmark more money on his next contract than he woulda gotten as Swayman's 1b. And Ottawa gets good goaltending for the first time in forever and the chance to offer him the 8 year contract other teams can't offer or get some assets back at the deadline if they don't perform in front of Ullmark. It will be a win-win-win.

    1) A goalie had to go. Saying that, it makes the Bertuzzi trade look like a 4 month free rental which a) SHOULD'VE allowed us to get past the Panthers in Round 1, and b) SHOULD'VE allowed us to resign Bertuzzi.
    That being said, my biggest gripe is our goalie room now potentially costing $10+ million instead of $8 million.

    I like this trade for the Bruins. Having Swayman/Ullmark was a huge luxury for sure but Swayman/Korpisalo is still kinda insane. Getting a decent replacement for Ullmark while also getting a first round pick and a prospect out of it is a win. Whether it's originally Boston's own pick or not makes no difference, a pick is a pick.

  • @saschaganser9671
    @saschaganser9671 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have no idea what Boston did there.
    Korpisalo alone should cost the 1st rounder (a better 2nd rounder it is in fact on 25) to remove. Even at 3m, that`s just not a good contract, especially for a team that is tight with the cap. Coming out of a 89 SV% seasons with almost 3,3 gaa, even 3m for 4x more years is a lot of money.
    Bruins have been a good place for goalies while Ottawa has been the exact opposite, so it might even work out.
    But if you look at actual value, a team like Toronto should have paid their 1st without taking a bad contract back. I don`t think Korpisalo has any value, 3m is still a lot for a backup.
    Ullmark was still the best goalie available, and he`s been a beast the season before.

  • @gdijkema
    @gdijkema 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Gotta disagree completely here - Boston still has an elite goaltender in Swayman, who's 5 years younger. Keeping 2 Vezina-level goalies on the roster would be any GMs dream, but it gets hard to afford in a salary-capped league. One of them had to go, and IMO Boston made the right decision on who to keep. Chances are Ullmark would be trying his hand on the UFA market after next year anyways, in which case Boston would be getting nothing. Ottawa is taking a big risk on that one themselves. To get a first round pick, a solid back-up goalie option and a potential fourth-line forward for only one guaranteed season out of Ullmark is a pretty great deal for Boston.
    That the pick was originally Boston's has no weight in the quality of this trade. The original trade to lose the pick was bad, but the pick was gone. Before the trade they didn't have a first round pick, after the trade they do, that's all that counts.

  • @forgottenfamily
    @forgottenfamily 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Imagine you had a 5M forward and you traded him for 3M forward + a first round pick + a prospect. You'd say that they had a really good trade.
    We, as fans, do not understand the goaltender market. Goaltenders are crucial, but teams do not value them. Why? Because we've had so many tragic tales from Cam Talbot to Carey Price to Jack Campbell to Matt Murray and on and on and on the list goes. This creates a massive downward pressure on the goaltender market. Goaltenders are crucial, highly volatile, and extremely difficult to replace and manage if things go poorly.
    But we treat our starting goaltenders the way we treat our star players because they give us so much joy. The NHL GMs do not see it that way. They really haven't ever seen in that way. And so we are constantly amazed that goaltenders are fetching far less than we think they should be fetching. Just look at Markstrom the other day.
    The trade is exactly what we should've expected Ullmark to fetch.

    Watching this a few months down the line and I wonder if Swayman is holding out because of this. Him and Ullmark seemed to have an amazing relationship and Korpisalo comes across as incredibly cold and reclusive and someone working out some issues in his mechanics which is probably the last kind of character you want to replace that kind of relationship.

    I don´t think korpisalo is a bad goalie. He´s just played in very bad teams most of his career. No goalie has been good in columbus or Ottawa these recent years. There´s a lot more he can bring into the table. Ullmark needed to go. No need for two great goalies while your offense is seriously lacking power. Time for a small rebuild for Boston. Couple new offensive players and they´re back in the cup hunt as always.

    The goalie market is brutal. Nobody is willing to trade the house for a goaltender. And then there’s the no trade clause to factor in. That limits the market and potential offers. At the end of the day, they needed to get something for the guy, and they’ve been trying for a while. You can only play one guy a night, and can’t be dumping a huge part of the salary on two starting goaltenders. The is issue here is that they didn’t do enough to clear salary cap space in the trade to address the OBVIOUS lack of talent/depth up the center of the ice. They better hope they make that #25 pick worth it, whether by trade or (for once) a good draft choice. That’s my say as a Bruins fan. Feel free to trash my opinion😂

    he has a year left on his contract and the bruins are not going to resign him, because they can't afford to and they are clearly going with Swayman who started every playoff game. so in a year's time he was going to be worth zero to the bruins - If you don't believe me, look up what the flames got for Gaurdreau. getting cap space and a first rounder and a backup for Sway was about as good as they could do. asking, what are they going to do if something happens to Swayman is kind of dumb. you clearly haven't looked around the NHL because no team has a Vezina trophy winning goalie who is still in the peak of their career as a back up.

    LOL you're overreacting. It's a player on an expiring contract that is 100% looking for a starting role. Chances are the kid has already made it clear that he will not be re-signing unless he is guaranteed the starting job. In which case getting a return for him at all is a win in of itself. As to why the bruins weren't able to get a higher return for him, it's cause they had no leverage. Most teams would be content to sit back and wait for the kid to hit free agency. No one was gonna offer anything crazy for an expiring contract on a goalie who is still unproven as a starter. Should really be happy that y'all managed to get anything in return at all.
