Fun Fact, that 25th overall pick use to be Boston's own pick! They traded it to Detroit for 6 weeks of Tyler Bertuzzi. The Wings, took that pick and used it to get Alex DeBrincat from Ottawa. So in a weird 3 team/2 year trade, Ottawa acquired Ullmark, Detroit acquired DeBrincat, and Boston gets Korpisalo. In the words of Steve Dangle Oof Marone!

As a Bruins fan. I feel betrayed. I loved watching them both.
Also very sad about the hug. The Goalie Hug. It was iconic.
Plus. Bruins had Bussi as a potential goalie, down in Providence. We also have DiPietro.
We got weaker. We definitely got weaker. Unless this pick is shown to be someone with potential. A dynamic scorer.
    Bruins got fleeced.

The real question is where ullmark signs next year. If he walks (they probably couldn't sign the two goalies as they both deserve starting goalie salaries) then it makes sense and is a good trade for Boston. If ullmark stays it's a big win, if they trade him at deadline and recoup assets it's a small won and if he leaves after one season for nothing, Boston wins the trade

As a Bruins fan I think this is the market value for a player that was behind a no trade clause. I was ready to get a second round for him. Come playoffs we get a expensive cheerleader every single game no matter which goalie starts because 1 will always sit.

  • @Gamerob64
    @Gamerob64 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

From an Ottawa fan's perspective, I think you're massively overvaluing the pieces that Boston got. Kastelic had very little value at all beyond winning faceoffs. He was asked to play tough, but didn't actually pull that off and was clearly falling out of favour with the coaching staff. He's essentially a throw-in that *maybe* sticks on Boston's fourth line. Korpisalo, on the other hand, was completely abysmal. He was, statistically, the worst goalie in the league last year. Ottawa was on the hook to pay him $4M for the next 4 years. It's impossible to overstate how huge it is to get out from that contract for Ottawa. I would have expected a first for someone to take that contract, let alone getting a Vezina winning goalie alongside it. Even retaining 25% you would think it would take a good amount. For Boston, maybe Korpisalo turns it around and becomes an ok backup, but it seems like a massive and unnecessary risk to take on this season's worst goalie for 4 more years at $3M. For Ottawa, this basically feels like we traded Kastelic for Ulmark, one for one, while dealing with an anchor contract at the same time. Even if Ulmark doesn't extend, I'm fully onboard with this move.

LOL - nice. Know what's funny, at beginning of year when the Oilers sucked Boston fans figured we'd trade Draisaitl to Boston for Ullmark. I never laughed so hard - this is what Ullmark is worth? Boston couldn't get more? IMO a draft pick past 20 is more of a 2nd round pick, 25th pick is not very valuable. They get a fringe 4th liner that hits and fights sometimes, great. They already had 6 guys that can play on the 4th line. and now they're locked into a deal with Korpisalo for FOUR years. Will he play better? I'm sure, but is he Linus Ullmark? Not even close. They traded their best trading piece in the same division for quantity over quality. This feels like trading someone just to trade them. Almost forgot to mention a whopping 1.165 million in cap space gained, get the duck boats ready!

Kastelic was too inconsistent during the season and saw his TOI diminished in most games. I suspect come next season, unless Boston is looking for a 4th line center, they'll place him on waivers so he can play in the AHL or he'll be a 13th forward.

Ullmark's NMC was always going to tank the value from the Bruin's perspective. Eliminating half of the NHL as trade partners would more than halve his potential value (something something Pareto principle). Korpisalo is average at best IF** he can come back from his horrific play. But as it stands, he is a massive negative asset and I would have asked a first just to get out of the contract (maybe a second with retention).
So essentially you traded the cost to get out of the Korpi contract and Kastelic for (one year of) a recent Vezina winner. Home run.
Yeah, Boston needed a tandem goalie, but why not a free agent or other trade target over one of the worst playing goalies in the NHL?
For Boston, I would have reworked the trade to have the main return be Chychrun, or in this framework, wouldn’t have pulled the trigger without a sweetener (2nd rounder or additional prospect) due to the negative trade value of Korpisalo

Ullmark plays well in Ottawa. .908+
Korpisalo struggles in Boston but improved marginally .900~
Sweeney uses the draft pick and reaches for a center, who will have a projected ceiling of a bottom six center, and he becomes another studnicka or Beecher
Kastelic we already know… add him to the list of bottom six centers on the bruins, he’s probably 8-10 in the bottom six center depth chart after Coyle, Zacha, Poitras, Geekie, Beecher, Boqvist, Frederic etc.

That's what bothers me about Kastelic. Does he bring real value to a team? Absolutely. You love a big, defensive bottom 6 forward who's a demon at faceoffs. Is it what the Bruins need? Absolutely not. We already have a bunch of Kastelics. This trade doesn't solve their scoring problem. This doesn't really bolster their defense. They got weaker in net. And they hardly alleviated any cap space from this trade. Unless the Bruins get a steal from their 25th pick I'm willing to chalk this up as a net negative for Boston.

The thing a lot of people don't understand is Ullmark had a lot of say in where he went. If he didn't offer to sign long term with anyone why would Ottawa give up more. The Bruins hands were tied. Might not be 1 for 1 but this is likely the best we get with all the parties involved having different ideas. Or heck even Better, what round got them Brad Marchand ?
They don't have a super rich prospect pool but they have Scouts that truly, deeply know what they're freakin doing and one of the most commendable developping systems in the league after that to bring those kids to the best expression of their potential.
This year the draft ain't the richest of all times but it seems it still is a pretty good one and at 25 they'll still get a seriously strong shot at a potential surefire NHLer that would fit the "post Marchand" timeline.

If you were to ask me a week ago what Ottawa would’ve had to give up to dump Korpisalo’s contract I woulda said a 1st + another pick/prospect at minimum. Probably would’ve had to take bad money back as well.
They somehow got out of the contract while only adding in Kastelic (an ok 4C) and they managed to get the reigning Vezina winner in return?!?
Even if Ullmark walks as a UFA this is still a big win from a Sens perspective. Goaltending was the biggest issue last year and Ullmark has been consistently good since his days in Buffalo. So you get him for 1year, and also dump your worst contract onto a divisional rival.
Even if the Sens blow next year they can trade Ullmark at 50% before the deadline and probably recoup most of this value. Just a home run for Staois in his first big move
I fully expect Korpisalo to bounce back in someway next year. Hard to be worse than arguably the worst goalie last year. Kastelic also seems like a prototypical Bruin as well. Big, physical, solid defensively, and will punch you in the mouth.

I think Ullmark's ceiling is higher. Anderson never won a Vezina nor ever really contended for one. His career GAA and save percentage is better than Anderson, though admittedly not by that much. The workload for both of them in their best years is fairly comparable.
Anything can happen, but I don't think Ullmark is like the other goalies you mentioned. Matt Murray was a rookie when he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh. He had never really been a true starting goalie even in that city. Joonas Korpisalo and even Cam Talbot never played at the level of Ullmark's best.

We've also seen how Ullmark perform on a subpar team when he was with Buffalo. I don't think regression is in the cards unless the Senators over play him as he has never played more than 44 games in an NHL season.
