Class Confusion on Kuwait Airways

  • I'm not sure if I got an upgrade to First Class on the first flight or a downgrade to Premium Economy on the second flight.
Both flights were on the same aircraft and booked in the same booking class. So why were my seats different? I have no idea.
Join me as I fly Kuwait Airways for the very first time - flying from Sri Lanka to Egypt via Kuwait. Both flights were on an Airbus A330. Both flights were booked in business class via the Kuwait Airways website. Both in booking sub-class c.
On the first leg from Colombo to Kuwait I enjoyed Kuwait Airways Business Class in a luxurious 1-2-1 configuration. However on the second leg from Kuwait to Cairo this cabin had magically transformed into a first class cabin and I was relegated to what was sold as economy-plus on the first leg. I've never heard of airlines doing this in the past so it may just be a Kuwaiti thing.
All in all it makes for an interesting business class flight review featuring 2 different types of cabin on the same aircraft.
This review also features the excellent Kuwait Airways business class lounge in Kuwait as well as the onboard service, meals, lie-flat bed (first leg only) and the inflight entertainment system.
    Flight 1
Route: Colombo (CMB) to Kuwait (KWI)
    Length: 2,577 miles, 5:46 hrs
    Flight: KU362 Seat 4k
    Aircraft: Airbus A330-200 registration 9K-APB (May 2015)
    Flight 2
Route: Kuwait (KWI) to Cairo (CAI)
    Length: 996 miles, 2:39 hrs
    Flight: KU541 Seat 6K
    Aircraft: Airbus A330-200 registration 9K-APC (July 2015)

I've made a video about the 'economy plus' before! When Kuwait doesn't sell any first class tickets on a particular route they move people to their first class cabin and anyone in economy can check-in online and select the 2-2-2 business cabin.

Your Colombo-Kuwait flight was on First Class, which means you were upgraded by Kuwait Airways for free since you booked both tickets on Business class.
Your Kuwait-Cairo flight was on Business Class. Premium Economy only exists on Kuwait Airways' 777-300ERs.

Nice review! I could feel how awkward it must have been with the IFE system on your second leg. At least the lounge area in Kuwait was nice. I ran into a similar situation with “class confusion” on Azerbaijan Air. They have a 2-2-2 configuration that’s marketed as First Class and a Business Class that’s really just Premium Economy.

Great review again Dennis. For me one of the best things about business class is trying the great wines they have, particularly when travelling on some lesser know airlines (in Australia) like Turkish. The wines are unique and gives an appreciation that would otherwise would be unknown. I don't think I will be travelling with Kuwait Airlines.

Great video Dennis: Regarding the mislabeling of classes: I've been on a few flights myself where this has happened. Most north american airlines phased out first class on their routes years ago, but whenever there was an equipment swap they'd sell the first class as business class (in theory giving preference to elite members). This was especially bad during the United/Continental and American/US Airways mergers. It may simply have been the case that they didn't offer first class on Colombo-Kuwait (as it's a less premium route) and were simply ferrying the aircraft. A confusion and disappointment for sure!

  • @kirstenrubberducky
    @kirstenrubberducky 5 ปีที่แล้ว

A few years ago, I flew into Kuwait from Jeddah on BA and then a day later was outbound on BA again. I went to the Kuwait Airlines lounge and presented my Qantas Platinum card. In those days the card was a weird brown colour. The hostess was going to deny my entry and said that the card did not look like Platinum. Actually she said, Sir - Look at me - I know my heavy metals! After I pointed to the oneworld emerald icon, she called BA to clarify and they said yes - he is Platinum. Actually the Lounge was a bit tatty and I cannot remember much about the food, but hey, at least I was in.
Am new to your vlogs and have subscribed as I like your videos. All the best.

Hi Dennis, interesting Class/Seat difference. On another topic, I travelled last weekend a couple of days after the B737 MAX being pulled from service. As you can imagine, the resulting overbooking created chaotic scenes at the gates as the airline personnel tried their best to accommodate as many people as they had seats for. I even saw a cockpit jump seat offered up to airline employees to free up that last seat. Throughout it all I have to say I was very impressed with the Air Canada Vancouver Airport Passenger Agents. Despite the pressure, they were excellent, courteous, and professional at all times. That said, the flying public generally demonstrated a calmness rarely seen in delay situations. The MAX story was front and center here in Canada so people were prepared. Too bad the same behaviour does not manifest itself during weather delays, which, at the end of the day, are safety related. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.

Let me clear the confusion. Kuwait Airway is renovating it's fleet. All it's current airplanes are brand new. However only 10 out of 27 of it's current fleet are owned by the company (The 777 with new Logo/Brand). All it's other planes (including the one you flew on) are leased planes (Temporally replacement for it's old planes to accelerate the transition). It has an order of 28 planes (A320neo/A330neo/A350) which should replace all it's current leased planes starting from late 2019, with same the configuration of it's new 777.

Hey Dennis, KU has the reverse herring bone configuration for their First Class and standard business class seats for their J class cabin.Due to the reduced premium demand on flights from Kuwait to Colombo/Chennai/Dhaka etc. They use the first class as J Class on these routes and the J class is used to seat a part of Y pax. On your flight to Cairo and also to other European destinations operated by the A330 which have a good premium demand, the reverse herringbone is used as F Class cabin and the J Class Cabin is used for J Class passengers! Quite weird but this is how it works!

Thanks for the warning, that seems a bit shabby treatment for high-paying customers. Did they show the seat map when you selected your seat at the time of booking?

I don't think its uncommon for carriers to market similar seats under different names. In the US domestic first class (recliner seat) is marketed as business on international routes. In Europe intra-Europe business class (economy seat with blocked middle) is different than long haul business (lay flat).

Dennis, flying from Perth (I would imagine Adelaide would be similar) on Singapore Airlines we get the regional business class product, which unless you’re flying on the 787-10, (your report on the inaugural flight from Perth highlighted this) is a very different product to their long haul business class. On this route, we get mix of 777s, A330s, as well as the Dreamliner. So to me it didn’t seem that unusual, despite the same aircraft type. When you selected your seat online, I imagine the different configuration was shown then?

The Arabic coffee I drank while working in Cairo, twice boiled in a Karnaka was wide awake coffee more like an expresso than tea. A glass of that before a boring meeting and I can guarantee no nodding off.

Royal air maroc has the same tricks or maybe worst, include to route cmn-jfk that charge 5k r/t for it , making one of the most expensive flighttime/dollars/hour seating in the world ...
Whoever the food is really good and the lounge during lunch time is great as well
I hope that you will do it /cover it to help business traveler from that route
The cheapest way to do it

When Kuwait doesn't sell any first class tickets on a particular route they move people to their first class cabin and anyone in economy can check-in online and select the 2-2-2 business cabin. Speaking from experience.

I think this is far more common as airlines order different configuration to suit different needs. For examples, Cathay Pacific has some 777 configured specifically for regional, and many more for international. and they would have different seats.

These aircrafts are three class configuration. F/j/y. As they don't operate first class in some sectors due to may be lack of demand., they provide first class seat for business class passengers and sell business class seats as premium economy. Where there is first class operated business class passengers will be given normal business class seat. In fact business class passengers are given an upgrade as far as seats are concerned where there is no first class operation. How can you complain.

    • @lonewolf6364
      @lonewolf6364 5 ปีที่แล้ว

sunu j the complaints seem to stem from the facts not being known/widely published upon bookin, as Dennis advised.

    • @kimamey

Yes me too. I fly 2 or 3 times a year from UK to Thailand and never direct. I've done stopovers in Istanbul once, New Delhi and Mumbai a couple of times but usually through the Middle East. Dubai once, Abu Dhabi a couple of times and Bahrain fir the first time a week ago. Most frequently is Doha which is my favourite airport as it seems bigger and more relaxed. I don't fancy a direct flight of 11 to 12 hours without a break unless it was business class. Premium economy would be nice but it's not something that the M.E. airlines seem to do. I know the Qatar boss says they'd economy class is as good as premium economy which suggests he's never tried it. I've considered trying PE on a direct flight or one through a European hub so I must try it before I get much older and stiffer.
I'll look out for Kuwait flights in future. I've seem them before but I'm not sure they were that much cheaper in economy than airlines imm familiar with.
I've avoided subscribing to you Dennis simply because I watch so many of these videos by different people however your plea got to me so I gave in. Just a few questions. How do you get time to meet your kids? Do they complain that you're away so much, if not maybe there's a message there? Do they fly and if so do they have to fly economy?
      Good work, keep it up.

@@kimamey as someone who also flew from the UK to Thailand a few times a year, I mostly either stopped in Cairo, Zurich or took a nonstop. I much preferred the Zurich flight simply because I love using the Swiss senator lounge at terminal E (access with my Star Alliance gold status) and I think Swiss offers a really great product especially compared to BA. I Haven’t flown BA for a while, however I might be willing to give them a try again because I’ve heard that their crews are really friendly (hopefully they’re not racist, my dad met some really racist crews in the 80s when he used the first class bathroom as a business class passenger. He got scolded really loudly and that was a terrible experience)

Do you think it has to do with the length of the flight? Certainly domestic flights in the US have quite different standards for what is allegedly First Class, and it seems to depend on the length of the flight (can't account for it otherwise).
