This was my first time using white oak in a woodworking project, and I really liked it. For this dining table, I took a different approach with the stretchers, but basically not having one. Instead, I made the upper portion of the leg more robust, and it attaches directly to the underside of the table.

If your day job isn't woodworking it should be filmmaking. I've gotten to the point where I won't watch a new video of yours until I'm sure I won't be interrupted as I watch, usually with both hands wrapped around my morning coffee. It's a great way to get a positive start on the day. Just out of curiousity, what inspired the use of oak for this build? I'm so accustomed to your use of walnut I thought I'd ask about the change.

As for the oak, I just wanted to try something different, and I knew I wanted something lighter in color. Oak has always had a negative connotation for me, so I wanted to break that.
My day job is neither woodworking nor filmmaking - Hopefully someday it will be both though. Preferably somewhere in that intersection ;-)
Oh, coffee! I forgot all about coffee this morning... too caught up watching these videos. Maybe it would be better with coffee, too. I love the video as a whole and your calm voice just entice to relax and have a break.
Definitely agree with Steve on this one, except I'm more of a fall asleep to it kind of person. The music and soft tone in your stories is ridiculously soothing. Hopefully you can achieve your dream of making this your dayjob. You've got a lot of talent in both areas.

Chris, I just finished a version of this table. A bit shorter so it will fit in its new location. The video and all the responses that you provided to viewers' questions were helpful in the build. It was designed to be a Christmas present, but Christmas got in the way. The new owners are excited about it being in their dining room. It was a satisfying build. Thank you for the idea of the table. You included the key information that made it possible.
I appreciate the way you "sneak up" to your pencil marks by doing repetitive cuts and how you move thoughtfully around your equipment. There is a zen to your method. Subscribed.

The oak is really beautiful, I like the beveled edges of the top and really like the subtlety of the splines they almost make it seem as if it's a super fancy joint of some sort. Hey Pat...thank you for the kind words and for the support. I was really pleased with the Oak. I'll definitely use it for more projects. I think it works really well on pieces like this that are large and with fairly simple/minimalist shapes.

The table is beautiful, and i very much enjoy the narrative and story which goes with each build. I'm about to embark on a large walnut dining table build. The plans I've drawn up 5 years ago are basically like yours; a top with four legs which aren't traditionally 90* strait up and down. All of your work is beautiful and I really enjoy your attention to detail.

Man I miss your old video formats! The solo guitar, the laid back narration, the deep thoughts. :) I mean don't get me wrong, I love your new stuff too, but this was nice to watch. ...anyhow, I'm looking back at your old table builds, thinking its time I made something big like this, now if I can only convince the wife to take the plunge (cost of wood, potential cost of failure lol!).

I love how you work so steady and deliberate. It shows a lot of care. I do a lot of bookbinding and that's just one slow and careful step after another. It's calming and really satisfying. I would imagine that's how your wood work feels for you.
Hey Maddox...thanks. I think it looks more relaxing on video than it actually is. Especially this build. It was hot and I was dirty and lugging around heavy stuff. I definitely has those moments of relaxation, but more often than not...it's just work :)

Good call with multiple passes on the tracksaw. We've learned to do this (usually in 10mm increments) as our ts 55 has overheated a few times.

Awesome table Chris! Just got around to watching it. I think a lot of people have a bad connotation of Oak. Quartersawn White Oak is one of my absolute favorites to work with.

I use a really similar vinyl sign from a company under my glue-ups. You're the only other person I've seen with that. Really enjoyed the video, Chris. Oh, and the table is simply beautiful!

Chris Salomone So did I! Ha ha. I use one to put on the kitchen table when I'm piling boards that don't need to be in the dusty house. I've not found a use for the third one yet.

Hey Chris... I've watched your projects ever since your first coffee table video. Of course, I also watch all 300 gazillion other woodworking TH-camr's out there as well, but if someone ever asks me which Woodworkers I watch, your channel is always right in the top 5. One reason is... and this took me a little bit of sitting here thinking, "Why do I like Chris Solomane's videos so much?" And I think the answer is... the music. of course the design work you do, and the craftsmanship is top notch. But really... the single-song music that plays throughout the video, without interruption, just kind of droning along... It' great. I'm also a guitar player of 25+ years, so I wanted to ask you two things.
1.) In your first video, ( I think ) you actually showed the guy playing the guitar. I think that, that single short shot of that guy playing the guitar music that I had been hearing, was SO connecting, that I fell in love with the channel right then and there. Why don't you incorporate just a very brief, shot of the guitar being played in each of your videos? Since the music is such a "character" in your story, it just seems like it would complete some kind of invisible circle, or some heady thing like that.
2.) What tuning is that guitar in?! The low E-string sounds like it barely has any tension it's so loose. I love it. I'm just curious, so I can tune mine up and see if I can have a go at the Solomone sound. :-)
Hey Michael...first of all, thank you for the kind words and the message. 95% of the music is done by my best friend (also named Chris) - if you haven't checked out his bandcamp page, give it a look. It is at the bottom of the video descriptions for a link. His music is under the name "Sleepy Pablo". As for why I don't put a shot like that in every video - I think I'll just put it where it naturally fits. In the two where I did, one I was talking about music, so it made sense to show myself playing, in the other it was talking about Chris, and I mentioned that he is the one you're hearing right now, so I showed him. I suspect there will be other opportunities to do similar shots. As for tuning, it varies, personally, I've done some standard, but most are open tuning. Try things like DADCAD. Or just look up "Open G" or "Open C". they are kind of "cheater" tunning. Makes it much easier to improvise for 20 mins without any major miss steps.
