    It's actually offensive that you find that gay scene offensive.... Lol not really but they're showing that not all gay people fall into the feminine sterotype. It's saying yeah he's gay but he's still a "tough" guy. If anything it's a good thing you just took it the wrong way.

    Trust me. Gays aren't the hypersensitive thin-skins you think they are. They can be quite self deprecating in their humor. A kind of gallows humor.

    I love Willem Defoe's insane parts in this film.

    Multiple murders would be all in one instance, like double homicide triple homicide. The strangler was a serial killer, murdering many people in separate instances.

    this could all be in my head but i think the out of sync story telling is to show Smecker's gradual agreement with the Brothers. the action scenes slowly merge together with the crime scene investigation until Smecker is there in the pool room, and then finally he IS there in drag. just my take.

    I've met a gay bloke with a similar attitude to Dafoe's character- he just had an odd sense of humour.

    I get the feeling that you didn't like the movie too much, or underestimate peoples ability to put things together themselves. I remember watching the film when I was 15 or so, and understood it just fine when the action scenes are shown/explained. Sure, I agree it's probably a long wait for it, but the build up isn't the worst part to it.

    The director wrote the role of Rocco so the real life David Della Rocco could play himself. That is why the character has the same name.

    I've always felt like Smecker's comment to his lover, was to indicate that Smecker was the dominant "top" in the relationship. He is annoyed when his partner wants to cuddle, while he is trying to handle a serious matter on the phone. When Smacked calls him a f** , he isn't saying it to denote homosexuality, but rather to mock his partner's overly gooey display of affection, at an inappropriate time. Being gay himself, Smecker is allowed to use this derogatory term, without it carrying the same connotation as a straight man using it. It's also very unexpected, given the circumstances, so it's used for a cheap laugh. I'm not sure if this makes it okay, but I didn't really find it offensive either... After all, Dafoe is gay himself, and he had no objection to delivering the line.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dafoe is gay ? I think his wife Giada Colagrande would disagree with you on that one.

    Have you seen the documentary Overnight, which I believe was meant to be a vindication of director Troy Duffy? first thing I would say after seeing that is Duffy's reply to any errors you pointed out (like the incorrect Latin) would be "it was stylistically designed that way!" because the guy is Webster's definition of the word "Twat". He seriously thinks he is God's gift to film making and only Tarantino himself can critique Duffy's work.
    Honestly, once you see the way Troy Duffy carries on, you will no longer be able to enjoy the Boondock Saints (btw- see what he did there? Reservoir Dogs. Boondock Saints) because you can't help but see Duffy's hubris in ever frame of celluloid. Every word of dialogue progresses beyond pretension into a new realm of smug delusion. And while I have no love in my heart for Harvey Weinstein, I literally ended the documentary viewing him as the hero.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh yeah, I'm well aware that duffy is one of THOSE kinds of directors, Also his excuse of "it was stylistically designed that way", just proves he's lazy as fuck when it comes to writing cause he can't even come up with a decent excuse.

    • @bobcobb3654
      @bobcobb3654 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Harvey Weinstein was a lot of terrible things, but he had a gift in knowing what movies were worth the headaches to make. Think about it; half the directors Miramax worked with had the same pretensions and massive ego as Troy Duffy, but the Weinsteins could figure out a way to make it work. Duffy being too much of a d-bag for Harvey Weinstein is like a musician being too much of a drunk for The Rolling Stones.

    I watched this movie last night. I liked it all right, but there were two things that I didn’t care for.
    1) Deus mentions that he likes that religion isn’t shoved down the throat of the viewer, but I’d argue that religion didn’t play enough of a role in the film. The movie sets up that the brothers are on a mission from God, and they take steps to protect a priest, but there isn’t really that much discussion on how they are killing others, even if it is in the name of God. Them beings “saints” felt like set dressing rather than integral elements of their characters.
    2) Rocco. I did not like this character at all. This ties into my other issue in that Rocco is definitely not a saint. He tries to molest an unconscious woman; he threatened to murder two other women out of anger; he never really shows remorse for helping a hitman kill a family; he threatens a priest to “protect their identities.” He certainly touches more on the “how far do you go to ‘do justice’ without being caught?” but the movie doesn’t put much discussion on their difference between Rocco’s actions and the “saintly, mission-for-God” brothers.
    So, when Rocco gets killed, I wasn’t sad or moved. I was between neutral and glad he was gone. I guess the manga and anime of Death Note deal with the moral grey area of vigilantism far better, so Rocco was a frustrating character who was, to me, not a good person, yet he keeps getting a pass because he’s besties with the titular characters.

    The story at the beginning, about thr young woman who was killed in an alleyway while everyone watched on, is a direct rip off from Alan Moore's "Watchmen". In that She was the woman who ordered the dress made from the special textile that would eventually becomes Rorschach's mask, and after hearing about her rape/murder He decides to take the cloth and use it to form his vigilante alter ego. Even the name 'Kitty Genovese' is a direct lift, as are the themes of moral absolutism and legitimizing vigilante justice explored throughout.

    • @kevinthepilgrim

      Well, Kitty Genovese was an actual person.

    I gotta disagree with you on the Smecker being gay thing. He's a self loathing gay man. It's a character flaw rather than a writer afraid to commit to a bit. He's a walking contradiction. A genius eccentric perfectionist who would have been raised in the 60s and 70s, which would easily explain his own discomfort in being gay. It's who he is but he hates it in a way. You have to look at it through very modern eyes to see it how you're portraying it. But hey i forgive you 😌 your welcome lol. Please come back!!
