WTF Happened to The Boondock Saints?

  • The Boondock Saints became a giant cult hit when it hit home video and, indeed, is a movie both loved and hated on this site. The film seemed to come out of nowhere. No one seemed to remember its theatrical run, but word of mouth soon made this film a huge underground hit. Why was this film so unknown? A multitude of factors played into the film's mystery. Bad timing for the release, possibly bad word of mouth from a very famous studio head, and the biggest problem with the whole thing, the writer/director - Troy Duffy.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is written by Bryan Wolford, edited by Cesar Gabriel and narrated by Mathew Plale, we dig into how this troubled, initially obscure DTV movie became a cult sensation.

Boondock Saints was one of those movies where my much younger self thought it was “awesome af”. I also credit it for beginning my journey into really appreciating Willem Dafoe. And then I saw the sequel and hated it. Then I revisited the original and while I didn’t hate it as much as the sequel, I also wouldn’t wish Rocko on my worst enemy.

I actually got to work a local premiere of BS 2. Norman, Sean and Troy were all there for a Q&A after the movie. For those that might not know, Julie Benz takes over the William DaFoe-type role. A kid in the crowd asked Duffy for her number. Troy then dials it and hands the kid his phone. Kid turned ghost white, lol. She didn't answer, but then a voice from the back of the theater chimes up moments later, "Hunny, it's Julie!" She called back Troy's wife. Julie then joined the Q&A on speakerphone. It was a fun time. The guys were all cool, but Troy definitely had a cockiness about him. My buddy and I have a photo of the five of us giving the camera the finger. Seemed appropriate. 😆

One thing that I absolutely did NOT dispose of was a birthday gift she got me on the last birthday we spent together, which was a personalized, autographed photo from the film that her friend got from these 2 at a convention she attended. I remember when I was in college, my roommate (who was very religious) suggested we watch it. I protested, thinking it was some Christian movie. I was definitely wrong, and for the time, it was such a cool film. Troy Duffy and Norman actually came to Kent State and did a Q and A. It was supposed to also have Patrick Flannery but didn't show for "personal reasons. It was entertaining, Duffy did most of the talking he was cussing trying to look cool, but it worked for his persona. Then they ended up hanging out at the local college bar that night, so of course, everyone went there. They just sat in the basement level of the bar and roped off the entrance to the stairs, they only let hot college girls down to see and "hang" with the guys. Norman got so drunk he ended up dancing on the bar and getting the cops called on him. I was shocked by how many people were also obsessed with the film at the time. so many people had the tattoos Veritas and whatever the other one was. It's definitely not the masterpiece I thought it was at the time, but it was still a great slice of pop culture that was a blast to watch. I've never seen the sequel, tho I refuse.

From what Duffy has to say, the documentary wasn't exactly edited in a flattering way. Now he was that ass in those moments, but we are severely lacking context. Documentaries are vehicles for a message, and they will be edited in which ever way gets that message across. If they wanted him to seem like an angel, they would have been able to do that too.

Rented it from a video store in Chinatown (Seattle area). The cover was all in Chinese kanji, so no idea what it was about. Loved it! It was like a Punisher film.
I got to meet the brothers at Emerald City Comic con (this was before Walking Dead came out.) was surprised to see one of them was actually Irish.

Oh man, I saw that film when I was on holiday at some friends in Manchester and we where so shit faced and the film was brilliant. Back in Germany I couldn’t get it and my friends send it over and I watched here with my friends. I loved the film. Unfortunately I lost the dvd at one of my many moves 😔

I love this movie. William Defoe was incredible in it- no one could've played Smecker better. The worst thing about the sequel is that Defoe isn't in it. The concept is brilliant. The writing was stellar. Anyone who missed it needs to see it.
Duffy sounds like he got a big head, but I'm really glad the movie isn't associated with Miramax.

It’s a very angsty, digestible Fight Club. Both writers taking influence from saying “f u” to the 90s counterculture and politics. Fight Club is more about accepting growing up and life sucks while disrupting the establishment and BDS has a lot of undertones about the brothers being angels of death to god to.. dispute organized crime.

Yikes, the head swelling was real.
I mean, I can understand the impulse; going from an unknown trying to find success as a musician, to having big studios in a bidding war for his screenplay. Yeah, that could definitely mess with someone's self-assessment and give them a bit of an arrogance problem. Still shitty behaviour, and he got worse as time went on it seems, blaming everyone but himself for the way things were going, but you can see why it happened. Most likely he started out, before the attention even started, with a bit of an ego, which all the attention validated to the point that his ego swelled out of control. Basically, he was probably a bit of an egotistical ass before he got any attention, with a 'no-one understands my greatness' mentality or something, as his absurd behaviour doesn't make much sense otherwise. Plenty of people see unexpected success and _don't_ fly off the deep end, and certainly not as quickly. It parallels what you might see with someone who unexpectedly gets a large windfall of cash, like lottery winners. A lot of people end up squandering the opportunity because they don't really internalize that it's still a finite resource; it just seems like they can't fail because they've gotten so much latitude to work with.
I vaguely remember liking the movie alright, though not appreciating it as much as its cult status might indicate. I don't remember liking the sequel as much? Not sure, it has been years since I watched them.
