What about using particulates in a stream for the charge to jump between, to extend the arc? Like salt, for instance, but set up so instead of an air-puff, each particle would be propelled via small rotating cylinders, and fed continuously? There's already little salt guns for indoor bug hunting - granted those do rely on pressurized gas. Maybe a test to see how viable it is could be done with a very fine tipped funnel and firing the arc into the top of the arc, and seeing if the charge flows at all.

Plasma Channel I have four suggestions. First of all it looks great and with that clear epoxy you have an opportunity to use some led lighting for a cool effect in that epoxy to show power is going through. Second, you want it to travel farther and straighter and you could use an infra red diode laser to ionize the air ahead of the discharge to get it to follow the beam, or even use a visible light beam, and reflect it off of a metal mirror, a flat spot polished on the bottom of the little sphere holding the pointy part. Third, an electron beam might ad some distance, thought it is rather complex to build a small one. Could you use a magnetic field to focus the discharge or would it just curve it around? Lastly a ducted fan blowing the air forward might extend the range and use stator blades to keep it from vortexing but travel straight. I hope these suggestions ring a bell in your head and you try some. Good luck on an already great job.

this is one awesome build Jay! I have an idea for improving your design even more. If you combine the Ray gun with a UV-Laser, you can ionise the air in a direct path in front of the gun which will work as a conductor for the electric charge. I think it would be neat to see how far you can shoot a lightning!

10:50 The fact that the electrons comes out of the electrode in a pretty much perfect straight line in the first centimeter or so and only after that they start to go in the typical spark way is interesting.
With enough energy density he could make something like this that would function like a stun gun over 20 meters or more You can get more expensive and much smaller caps etc to make something about this size that would be capable of doing so that only uses 9 to 12 volts dc. The problem is energy density of the battery. The best lipo right now is about 3500 ma per cell something around about 140 watts little less as that is for a single 18650 cell which is 3.7 volts To make it actually useful as a sort of non lethal weapon you would need many times that at 9 to 12 volts. I have been wanting to build something like this ever since "Join the technicians" built a wand with this principle. You explained it way better, so maybe now I can.
The U.S. military has looked into laser directed plasma discharge as a way of zapping the electrical components of a missle. You shoot a laser beam long enough for it to ionize a direct chanel at a target. Its civilian application is a virtual lightning rod of "infinite" length.
We played with the same ac generator board. It's a full H-bridge topology which has several advantages. The mosfets have lower losses. The frequency is not detemined by the tranformer. You can boost the secondary voltage by inserting a capacitor on the primary side. (Resonance) The waveform is quite symmetrocal although current control might improve that. We noticed iron losses are significant and wondered if you need the heavy hot ferrite at all. The inductance only goes down by a factor two if you take it out. Increasing the frequency by 40% wpuld bring down the current amplitude if you want that. A ferritetransformer may not be ideal for ionocrafts
You have to appreciate how much work goes into that 10min video. I guess your little HV modules were giving more like 15kV though, if a theoretical 10x multiplier was giving 120kV.
Go bigger!!!! Gotta compete with Electroboom! Or, as a way to make it a challenge, Try to get the highest voltage, in the most compact way possible, without it being two feet long. Not sure if if would require a special type of resin. But it would be fun to see just how high of a voltage you can get, in something that can be held with one hand.

I'm currently working on a story where a character builds what is essentially a lightning gun. In your opinion, would it be more "real" to have him base it on a Tesla coil or a Van de Graff generator? Fantastic video, by the way. I love how you directly talk about the process you use to build such amazing machines.
You should build an electrostatic precipitator! It uses static charges to filter dust and smoke right out of the air They are used in large industrial applications and in electronic air cleaners
not really my field so this might be all incorrect but: if i were to oversimplify what's happening with the salt at the end, you're charging it by shooting electrons at it, correct? so electron squirt gun? the image itself made me think "what about the opposite?" Started thinking about shows where people with electric powers drain appliances to charge up. then i thought, even if out of the top of my head i don't think it's possible, could you make a gauntlet/gun/device that would force the flow of electrons from whatever it's pointed at towards itself? same way you charged the salt, a gun that would discharge statically charged salt or, even better, steal electricity from a light bulb if pointed towards the wiring and make it dim.
My version of what you did here, was use a small DC motor in series with the 8 ohm side of a audio transformer and a 9v battery.. No arc, but using 2 pennies as electrodes on the palm of a glove gave a few yowies... Your circuit would be a great add on for a B9 Robot...
I would love to see you use this on metallic and magnetic objects in a fog bath as your other research showed that ionizing the air made the fog condensed allowing the visualization of electrical fields and it would be wonderful to see what it is doing especially in high-speed
hey! Your BSI thruster is similar to a cathode ray but with no vacuum, but some cathode rays have their electrodes heated which enhances performance! (I learned that from electrobooms cathode ray vid)
The lightning gun is epic! Do you offer plans for the DC HV power supply, or is it something I can buy somewhere? Also, where do you get those cool small, yet apparently very efficient transformers? What was that firearm that you were shooting at the range? Lastly. YES!! Make a more powerful lightning gun, and I think you should take the advice from many here of including a laser to pre-ioniize a path through the air so that the electrical discharge can be more predictably aimed. Thank you for all of your cool projects! Keep up the fantastic work.
Yeah i made one of those out of an old camera years ago. Tazers work too. Old Tazers from flea markets are exactly the same. Just go buy an old powerful Tazer then boost it, but dont hurt yourself because it does get dangerous.
Just built one of these for myself and my students. It doesn't seem to be as powerful but I am thinking I can make different attachments for the output like a small scale ionic wind thruster for the front so students could see that it's possible to generate an airflow with it.
Hi! Thank you with this magic 😃 But I have one request: can you show me (us) how to uniformly spread laser toner on a flat or cylindrical surface using static electricity? A parts list and wiring diagram would be welcome.
You should build a personal shield to go with the ray gun. If you can build up enough static charge on top of a hat, but just before the point it discharges or arcs, it will repell rainwater. I used to charge up rods in the science lab, and then use them to bend water and goofy stuff like that. If you add cotton or streamers, you know when you have enough charge as they will stand up in the air on their own.
I have an idea. What if, you make the same gun buttt, you also shoot tiny metal projectiles(bullets) with the arc soo, when it gets released out of the gun you see a arc between the bullet and the gun. Give it a thought..
You can probably increase the range of the spark discharge by enveloping the output point conductor in an argon gas stream; And potentially more interesting: Adding a U.V projector of some sort ( short wavelength and parallel coherent beam better). I think you'll love this :-)
Boss, there is a weapon from the movie district 7 you are building... Imo, don't need to focus the beam so much as giving it an ionized path to jump through! Try adding a powerful laser to act as an ion rail and see how far and straight you can shoot that thing!!!
Add a way to attach different coil shapes for a powerful portable EMP gun. Then fry some circuit boards. Would be cool if you can get strong pulses at the distances you were testing at already.
You should build a ball lightning projector or plasma caster. Its a rail gun that uses ball lightning. If you truly understand ball lightning its not a big deal.
Add a laser light with ion beam, to your electric gun. The electrical current should flow in the direction of the laser beam for a long distance shock.
I wonder if the electron beam can be focused to follow a laser beam? The laser can be isolated by using fiber optics to transmit it to the high voltage section. If it works it's kind of like a light saber from star wars.
Version 2 could use a compressed gas and play with firing bursts of coronal plasma, might even be able to get the right setup to shoot beam-like blasts almost like a particle beam cannon of accelerated-charged coronal plasma, might take some finagling with burst timings if you take that route.

You blessed with wisdom and knowledge, man, wow!
bro really wanted those electrons back 10:03
So good he makes it look easy...
11:00
way to make a girl spark, mate.
smooth.
Please create a Rotary Railgun based on The Star Wars Arc Troopers Shoulder Mounted Chaingun!🙏👍
Please at least three barrels, not looking for anything crazy far as rate of fire and or ammunition capacity. Just want to see at least three rotary shots in succession! Interested in this bc it's the ONLY projectile weapon in Star Wars, it's never been done, and I'm interested in barrel damage reduction from having more barrels! The Arc Troopers backpack should leave room for Plenty of room for larger power supply/source! Lol and your goin to want The Arc Troopers Helmet bc your firing a Shoulder Mounted Railgun! Perhaps you could just make the whole uniform as well ;)
Please no Coilgun!
Bro litterally made himself magnetic 💀💀
The pick up lines make themselves
Man when will the ionic thrust plane will come ? I am very excited for that .
Bud I really appreciate your skills!!! Keep up the good work man.
Boromir is cool as always! 💥
It uses static charges to filter dust and smoke right out of the air
They are used in large industrial applications and in electronic air cleaners
not really my field so this might be all incorrect but:
if i were to oversimplify what's happening with the salt at the end, you're charging it by shooting electrons at it, correct? so electron squirt gun? the image itself made me think "what about the opposite?" Started thinking about shows where people with electric powers drain appliances to charge up. then i thought, even if out of the top of my head i don't think it's possible, could you make a gauntlet/gun/device that would force the flow of electrons from whatever it's pointed at towards itself? same way you charged the salt, a gun that would discharge statically charged salt or, even better, steal electricity from a light bulb if pointed towards the wiring and make it dim.
Man please go further on with this idea. This is amazing! Great Video
My version of what you did here, was use a small DC motor in series
with the 8 ohm side of a audio transformer and a 9v battery..
Thank you brother 🙏
BeachGold and of course the bigger gold is also attractive to that static electricity when its dry. For easy separation from the sand.
hey! Your BSI thruster is similar to a cathode ray but with no vacuum, but some cathode rays have their electrodes heated which enhances performance! (I learned that from electrobooms cathode ray vid)
Love how you inspire the youth too🤙🏼
I loved this! I clearly need to learn more about electronics and circuit building. Thanks for the video!
When you said five stages I didn't tell five stages of that multiplayer circuit can create that much of a ⚡😮😮😮
Could you share the stls? I think this could be a cool project
Now I want to see a full rifle version. Imagine the voltage when you have triple the space to use!

THAT was amazing, how the static literally pulls the can, I wonder if i could make a glove that could do this with my little generators.
I think you should add some resistors at the end for safety purposes like those guys who made a similar magic wand.
ElectroBoom will be salivating knowing you built a better one but you need to up your game on shocks to compete🤣🤣
Can we have a parts list please? Are you willing to share the stl of the gun body as well?
Just built one of these for myself and my students. It doesn't seem to be as powerful but I am thinking I can make different attachments for the output like a small scale ionic wind thruster for the front so students could see that it's possible to generate an airflow with it.
It's not often I get to go on some crazy video and say "I did exactly that in middle school in the 90s!"
This was sooo cool!! would love to see more versions !
Excellent build and video
Hi! Thank you with this magic 😃
But I have one request: can you show me (us) how to uniformly spread laser toner on a flat or cylindrical surface using static electricity? A parts list and wiring diagram would be welcome.
Awesome wooden table.
You should try using a crystal on the end to concentrate the beam, And use a moss fed transistor.
To make the Pulses ...
It would be great to see if you can get one to shoot up to 2 meters that would be cool, a challenge and potentially useful in some circumstances.
Any way to visually show the 'beam' , i'm interested in seeing how it might be diffusing as it fires.
OK, that thing is completely awesome! I have to have one!
You can probably increase the range of the spark discharge by enveloping the output point conductor in an argon gas stream; And potentially more interesting: Adding a U.V projector of some sort ( short wavelength and parallel coherent beam better).
I think you'll love this :-)
This has been my favorite video so far. I'm so fan of ray guns and all the sci fi behind it hahaha, grown up playing CoD haha.
Hey, I’m honored to hear that. Thanks for watching my videos!
Now that’s a nice one.
Boss, there is a weapon from the movie district 7 you are building... Imo, don't need to focus the beam so much as giving it an ionized path to jump through! Try adding a powerful laser to act as an ion rail and see how far and straight you can shoot that thing!!!
I’m definitely trying this at home
You could use a laser diode to concentrate the electrons into a longer direction I could be wrong but I remember hearing that somewhere
Props for making such a great video! One question though, how does it charge objects from afar.
try partnering it with a laser. The lazer should ionize the air between you and your target and create a path for the electricity to travel over.
Right, it's almost there !
Add some hypersonic speakers on the barrel tip
Would you mind sharing the values of the capacitors and diodes you used?
You're the Tom Cruise of Plasma and High Voltage bro. Mr Impossible 👏👏👏👏❤️
very good project
You have motivated me to learn Maths, Physics and Electronics
You don't need math for this unless you don't have a Calculator
But to be honest math is needed to find the perfect capacitors and diodes
But using the Calculator is much easier
You should make like a elecron sniper higher votltage and maybe like a magnetic barrel to focuses the electrons.
