I still remember Aussie kicking our butt. Their backline was world class and their forwards dominant and skilled. Nightmare team then but seems so long ago now.
As a South African they were, and I think sometimes still are the best games from a watching perspective. More grunt and passion from SA V Nz, but less pazaz.

I have a love affair with many things Australian in the 1990s. Savage Garden, Natalie Imbruglia for example. Watched the 1999 final as a kid who had just completed his primary school exams and the Wallabies impressed on me mightily.
Australian rugby was very strong in the 1980s and 90s with legendary players like Mark Ella, David Campese, Nick Farr Jones, John Eales, and George Gregan etc, The Wallabies won the Bledisloe cup in 1998 and defended it till 2003. Its now been 20 years since the Wallabies last won. Can Eddie Jones team do it this year?

This is the time when this 2 great rugby team would run on the field and we were not sure which team was going to win coz there were both competitive and good...compared to now as we would all know 90% of the time that the All blacks would just wipe Australia..don’t mean to be rude but it’s real fact now.
I went to a lot of those games back in the day - both teams were full of legends - was a rabid fan - but without question those Wallabies guernseys were the worst rugby guernsey in history....
World rugby was so much better when SA & Aust consistently competitive and winning. Now the international game is more often than not, repetitive & boring 🥱
Aussies? greatest? - they had a good year or two is all, as happens for all teams from time to time, Oz, England, the Boks, theyve all had good years of being supreme, and all teams are consistently formidable more or less and deserve recognition as such, especially the great Springboks who WERE the greatest team up until the 70s with their unmatched win record throughout the 20th Century, but since then even they have been eclipsed by NZ. Respectfully, when you talk about the 'greatest', only one team deserves that moniker today - New Zealand ABs!
At that time, Oz having WC wins in 91 and 99, the 1st country to win 2 and very nearly a 3rd in 03, they were the greatest if for only a few years. It's been a tough couple of decades since.

Matthew Burke was just one awesome rugby player.
Yeah - thankfully he came along to push Larkham to five eighth.
Criminally underrated in all time discussions
The whole backline was massively talented.
My childhood hero!

Agree that jersey is the best one . I have it’s image ingrained in my memory growing up as a kid .
I still remember the Headline "Burke 24 NZ 16". Great game.
Ha!!! Am I the only one who misses those lil jingles during the highlights of a try?
A golden era and a golden commentator in Gordon Bray.
The era when australian rugby had balls
Wow.. so many legends of the game
So many fantastic players, from both teams. I'm a Kiwi but I always had respect for Joe Roth. Not the biggest, not the fastest but always gave it all.
Joe Roff bro.
He was big...and very fast.
Playing weight over 100kg during the "transitions to pro" era. Joe was big.
Joe Roff? What are you talking about he's 6foot 4

Back when the Wallabies played respect, guts and heart. The nineties was simply the last best decade before everything went downhill.
This was before Rugby turned professional.
@@telstar4772 Australian Rugby turned professional in 1995 with already semi pro players playing before that.
Realy upsetting to see Australian rugby fall so far down hill. New Zealand keeping constency and class
Actually SA were the 'world beaters' that year. they beat NZ and Aus both home and away to finish tri nations being unbeaten
that's true but they're talking about that specific era where the Wallabies were very dominant
Those were the days when you could be proud of our boys!

The answer is "No"! And you probably have a few spicy thoughts about Jones by now.
Gregan was soo good at 9, really Iconic watching this.
Rod Macqueen thinks: "Hmmm - gotta fit Matt Burke in for his goal kicking ... But will Larkham be any good at 5/8????? S'pose we can give it a go ..."
Truly a great Australian team!👏
thanks for sharing this - brings back memories - nice to see Jonah Lomu on the bench...can't help wondering if he should of benn on earlier
Aussie were the best in the world back then from 1998 all the way up to 2003. They always would beat the all blacks.
Man I miss those days
So many legendary Brumbies in that team.
Boks won 17 tests in a row end of 1997-1998, including beating OZ and NZ twice each, so they were the best then
Matt Burke had an absolute stormer on Attack and D he's kicking was very good too
Boks won the Tri Nations that year
The Wallabies look like they parachuted into the stadium.
You mean the year the Springboks were the best team? OK.

Whatever happened to Tom Bowman?
Good question. He was a brilliant lock for a while and people thought he was going to be a legend of the game.
Back when Australia had Heart
When Ausies with balls played rugby😊
When Australia was the lucky country ,no more
1998 SA were the greatest. They grand slammed the TRC, and just lost their final game to England that year
Gone are the days... Matty Burke all star
Not sure what happened to Wallabies but they seemed to have gone backwards last 15-20yrs sadly not sure how they will stop it sliding
