Colin is a storyteller. I saw him a few years ago at a small hall in Sonoma, CA. We were fed dinner there and then treated to his performance. No warmup, just him. He speaks his mind and whatever's on it. One story leading to the next. He performed and told stories for nearly 2 hours without a break, except for a drink of water now and then. He's vastly underrated. Perhaps that's what makes him so great.👏
Though I met my "Maggie" Carolyn later in life, we did marry. When I lost her last year, I wrote a song to her and posted it. For those of you who still have their "Maggie" please tell her every day how special she is.

yes a lot of us males knew a Maggie . That's what life does to you . I was 21, my girlfriend whom i was deeply in love. We were inseperable , but she had ambitions that I did'nt want to deny her. She went to W.Germany to become a nanny . I actually took her to the airport on that very sad day . After only one letter a month later, I never heard from her again . I still think about her 48 years on . Great song Colin , it drifts along into the wind like my memories of my first true love that was not to be .

Im abt 15. Im a hard man to break. Ive never cried to a movie or a song. This changed my life. I cried and cried just thinking about the story. It told me that no matter how hard, nothing is more powerful than love.
So, by my reckoning you are now 17: I’m 57 (how did THAT happen? Okay, the traditional way - not dying🤨)
Don’t put a brave, hard man, face on! We are all human, and we need other human’s help… And, yes, it’s taken me decades to realise this (with some help)…

I lost my Maggie many years ago... Last year I found that she lost us all 6 years ago... It still hurts....

I'm often astounded by the depth of the talent contained within Colin Hay. This is so deeply human. Oh, he does with that Veillette Gryphon 12 String puts what I try to shame. Long live Colin Hay.
Colin Hay writes the best unrequited love songs - hands down. A very talented musician , song writer and entertainer.
I think, when I die, if I end up in Heaven, I will hear music like this.

"Maggie" is actually a true story told by Hay about a girl that he met when he was a young boy. They grow up together and their relationship evolves from them being little kids with crushes on each other to them being in love culminating with him losing his virginity to her. His family then moves away to Australia and he becomes part of one of the biggest bands of that time. She subsequently gets wrapped up with drugs, her life on a downward spiral. He expresses his regret at not seeing the signs that she was headed for trouble throughout the song. His plaintive cries of "I miss you" lie between each chorus as well. Eventually, after not hearing from Maggie for a few years he receives a call from her mother who through her tears tells him that Maggie has died. However, before her death she wrote him a note. in the letter she tells him that she is better off now and that she is forever his and she misses him."

"I just thought about this girl that I knew when I was young. She came into my mind and then I just wrote down the song in about 40 minutes. And while I was writing the song, the verses, I was weeping convulsively."

I can't help but cry everytime I hear this. Always catches me off guard when it pops up on my Spotify that I have to skip it when I'm in public.
I honestly wonder if he knows how amazing he really is. He is beyond poetic, musically Inclined, entertaining, awesome, stage presence. He beholds more than most can even want. He's a saint in disguise for us to endure.

I saw Collin at a small venue in Melbourne. In amongst his funny stories and anecdotes he pulled out this song, and it floored me. Trying to hold back the tears in a crowded venue was near impossible. Brilliant story teller and musician.
It reminds me of a dear friend I lost when she was 15 in a tragedy of suicide. The song makes me cry.

I have no idea why, but the first time I watched this particular video of Maggie, a song ive heard many times before, I wept. Just just a powerful performance.

I saw this performed at the Plaza live in Orlando on March 14th 2024 it was brilliant and people were teraing up(including me)....................even though he did explain that Maggie was not real before he started. The show was fantastic, funny, and it was just him, a guitar, and two bottles of water for over 2 hours. Go see him, you will NOT be sorry, I promise you!!!!!

As an adolescent remember first noticing how good his lyrics are on "Catch A Star".
Maggie was a real person in Colin's life and said to be his "first love". After he left the "home country" (as he often calls Scotland) she got caught up in the downward spiral of drug abuse that is so rife in the towns and villages around Kilwinning (his home town). One day he received a call from her mother to say that Maggie had died. She also did mention a letter Maggie wrote to Colin and in it were the words "waiting for my real life to begin". It is believed that Maggie is also the subject of the song "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You".
A wonderful story for a wonderful song but we all have our own take on it.

Colin said in an interview that he heard the sentence 'waiting for my real life to begin' when he went over to his friend's house and asked him how was he doing. Don't spread misinformation. I don't know about the rest of the stuff you mentioned, but I doubt most of it too. Just enjoy the music.
You never know. He may have just paraphrased it to save himself having to ge into the whole 'Maggie' story. I'm not sure you can, in good confidence, claim that MP T is 'spreading misinformation. In fact, maybe YOU are.

I think, the most honest love song. Colin is a story teller, he takes you on his amassing journey. I would love to meet him. If he tours New Zealand I will move mountains to see him perform live.

Its awesome how this personal experience can be transformed into a beautiful song which has two purposes: one, give tribute and remembrance to this young unfortunate soul (Maggie), two, so Colin can ventilate his emotions towards this girl who was a very significant human being in his young life.

His voice is even better now than when he was younger. He has most of his range in tact and his voice is richer and more resonant. I love his solo stuff.

Colin, I've been a fan since before I knew it and even before I knew what vegiemite was. Long before you wisely knew to advise against litigation.... Doesn't it all seem a lifetime ago? And then as if it were only yesturday?
Somehow, this song had slipped through and I heard it first only today. I'm sorry it's only now that Ive first heard its existance and then Im not....... Most likely back then I'd have not given the appreciation it deserves nor recognised the trajedy therein nor known the pain of loss that moves the soul.

As musician I sorta claim I have found Colin as something more than a singer songwriter. He seems to take the craft and just so easily make it so. Few are of his kind and man is it a pleasure to enjoy!
What a sad and beautiful song. For those of us who have experienced loss of a loved one who was not supposed to die when they did …. Whether a lover, a child, a spouse…this song touches and and can sooth that grief.

Oh, I just adore him as an artist, but my gosh - the most handsome man on Earth, I believe. That face is so interesting, so expressive. For someone with facial amnesia, his face I can remember longer than anyone else's.
Funny that you say that, ma'am. I'm a man in my 30s and when I first saw Colin's face here I thought "That's one regal looking man." I could well imagine his countenance in an old portrait of a nobleman/warrior/king.
Captured the feeling of being young and feeling you've fallen in love with a girl who's also young, maybe the girl down the street, but while you were so close, and seemed the best best friends, and you felt there was a hope of more than friendship, it didn't quite work out that way. And then the added pain of dealing with the fact she realised later in life that maybe it should have been you all along, but she didn't or couldn't tell you. He captured that so well.

Saw Colin at Anita’s theatre in Thirroul NSW tonight Sunday 20/11/22.He played this song and many others.Such a brilliant musician and story teller.Thankyou Colin for taking me back to my youth.
Yes, I was in that audience too. It was the last night of the tour, and you'd think he be exhausted. But if he was, we didn't know. 2 hours of Colin Hay's stories, some to music, some just spoken. He's a brilliant storyman, as well as an amazing musician.

By far one of the best solo/acoustic performances I have ever seen. I have been privileged to see numerous great concerts. Mr. Hay was by far the most amazing hands down.
I knew a girl like in the old country of California. I cry for her every year since Lauren passed away. I remember when she was 9 and I was almost 9. She was never mean and made me who I am. I hope that we throw stones into the sea together, with no others there. Lauren died in New York 15 years ago this month but I hope she found her way back to the older of Colin’s Album. We grew up in the Santa Monica Mountains, which is on the cover of the album. RIP Lauren
