    Years ago, i was driving with my wife to meet her family on the beach. When we got to the beach, I stayed in the car and she said why aren’t you getting out? I said “because I want to finish this song” I was listening to Colin Hay on Prairie Home Companion”.
    After the song was over, I got out and her dad got out of his car at the same time. She asked him what took him so long…he said “I was listening to Colin Hay on Prairie Home Companion”.
    They say a woman looks for a man like her father. I don’t know how true that is, but this lends some credence to it.

      Transcendent. I just saw Colin Hay in person only hours ago in Atlanta. And while his performance of the song was incredible, I couldn't help but think of this recording, and this variation of his song. The phrasing on the line, "I just don't think" is unlike any other recording, and it is... transcendent. And the slower pace of the song is like a confession.
      But in the end, I guess it doesn't really matter, I was still in tears before the end of the song.

He looked at me a few times and saw that I was crying, but I didn’t care. I think it’s important for him to know that he has the ability to hit nerves in such a beautiful way through his music. I've been divorced for 14 years. I still haven't gotten over my ex. She was the most wonderful part of my life and gave me the most wonderful daughter. I don't know how I've been so blessed to still be in contact with her. Nowadays, I just feel blah because I do miss my ex, her smile, her laughter, her singing. I heard this song for the first time on the Garden State soundtrack in 2004, when I was 18 years old. A few months later, my dad died of a massive heart attack. To this day, 15 years later, I can’t listen to this song without thinking of him and completely breaking down into tears. “Your face, it dances, and it haunts me.. your laughter still ringing in my ears. I still find pieces of your presence here, even after all these years.”

      Late to this, but I feel the same way about my mama. She died of liver cancer about a month after diagnosis. Came out of nowhere, she never drank a drop in her life, just went for a checkup and her bloodwork was way off, no other family members had ever gotten cancer. But I think of her and my dad when I hear this. He passed in 09, her in 15. I was in my mid 20s and early 30s, and I miss them both terribly. I was the youngest and stayed back to help them as they were older and both had issues getting around. My older brothers left the state, so it was me and them since I was around 12.

About 3 months go I started drinking again; no whiskey, just beer and wine. Sad but I didn't want to die without having a beer! I still listen to this so many times and I'm sure it will help me give up again, hopefully sooner rather than too late. I turn 70 next week so I hope I give it up soon. Songfacts®:
    Colin Hay wrote this song after a long battle with alcoholism that cost him his marriage and sent him into a depression. "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" came to him very quickly - it took him only about 40 minutes to write. The "you" in the song is alcohol, which was so important to him for so long that it seemed to take on its own persona. Sober, he can drink good coffee every morning, but he'll never completely get over the whiskey.
    In 2007, he released a more direct song on this topic: "I Wish I Was Still Drinking."

    Do you know Matty Healy, the frontman of the 1975? Number 1 public enemy of the century, he's been punished more than he should be.. (I don't want to go into that hatred any further, people won't listen either way)
    No one dares to stand or be seen with him; even his girlfriend leaves him at his lowest point.
    Yesterday, he sang this song to open the concert of his own band, the 1975. He is a man. Men tend to ignore their own hurt or feelings, but it is the way he regulates his feelings, singing the song that suits him. It is so lovely to see him finally able to regulate his feelings. We are not his family, we are just his fans.. but, we consider us as the friend of the band. We love their music.

    • @vocalimpactplays217
      @vocalimpactplays217 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Combination of a few things, if we're focusing solely on the tone of the instrument - first, it's just a really nice guitar! Second, the writing and performance is great. His go-to tuning is usually DADGBD or DADGAD (here it's the latter), and writing with those lets you double a ton of notes to get really big sounding open chords as well as some really nice shimmery dissonances. On top of that, he's got excellent control when it comes to dynamics and intent - he knows exactly what sound he's trying to make in each section and isn't just blindly strumming away at chords.
      Third, the mix is fantastic, and is actually using two input sources - the DI from the guitar's line out (that gives you a lot of that really "specific" and almost electric sound on the little melodic riffs) and the dedicated microphone on the guitar (gives a lot more resonance and body, more like what you'd hear if someone was playing a guitar right in front of you with no amplification). Mix those two together and you've got the best of both worlds, which contributes to a really cool acoustic sound!

    • @thomasmartin2706
      @thomasmartin2706 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nickbonzer another way to unlock good acoustic guitar recording is to mic up the guitar in two spots: put one condenser mic 3/4 of the way down the neck, and another one south of the bridge. The sound resonates more from the fretboard and the top than it may seem. If you are using this double mic technique, you will want to avoid placing a microphone directly in front of the sound hole. It will muddy the recording, especially if your guitar has a particularly beefy sound, like that of a Gibson J45 or a Guild.
      If you have a studio with good sound treatment, you may also want to set up a third microphone in the middle of the room. Ideally, this one would be a ribbon mic, but those can be very expensive. A condenser microphone will do just fine.

    This song speaks to the first woman I ever fell in love with...48 years ago. She taught me how to be a decent human being. She taught me how to love and be compassionate. She taught me that others were more important than me. We are not together, but we are still close friends. It wasn't to be. Part of me will never get over her.

    It's been 8 months since you passed, and I miss you Pops. Could really use some of your cranky ass wisdom and humor right now. Love you so much Dad.

    One of the best songs ever written. Colin is so underrated- he is a unique talent and just absolutely brilliant. Thank you, Colin for all you have done for me with your music and others that find you as great as I do.

      Would love to play drums on any of your tours. I’m not a hack - been on the thick of things with big national bands.

    2 yrs ago today, I lost my husband of over 47yrs. He was a musician/guitarist & the love of my life. He loved this song, music is how he expressed his feelings. He had a whole list of love songs for us. It is now my reality as I will never get over losing him. He was an amazing person, his love was endless & unconditional. Thank you Colin.

    For me this song is about my mother, I'm almost 50 years old and I still miss her every day... It's amazing how the same song can mean so many different things and at the same time so similar. Thank you Colin for all these years of music that touches people in so many different ways.

    Reminds me of my sister who’s been gone for a few years now.

    what i love about DADGAD tuning is that when its played like this it sounds firm, but also has this vibration that almost makes me think of a cat purring..
    these chords make me feel so melancholy too.
    absolute beauty of a song :)

      Never knew this was the tuning. I just played in drop D. I bet this is much easier. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    So...I'm trying to learn this song on guitar after falling in love with it a few months ago.
    Now its not particularly hard to play or sing BUT...(puting the lyrical content aside for now) his timing & lyrical delivery are truly what gives this its haunting & hard, heart hitting feeling. Absolute masterpiece. Massive respect & a true legend & i'm glad & proud to say...a fellow Scot 😁👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✌️❤️

    This song helped me heal from the death of my mother on 4/28/05. There wasn't much else to lean on at that time. Thank you, Colin, for this release. Song writing at its very finest.
