My young mother had to rush from San Diego to Seattle in 1945 after Japan surrendered , to meet her sailor husband at discharge. Navy change of plans. She had a due date she was trying to beat to Seattle and later she told me the train north was full of young war brides like herself. The train was cold, slow and dirty...apparently that Siskiyou route was a beast. I enjoyed seeing Shasta and Dunsmuir in the video as I recall being excited as a kid by the rail activity any time we passed by on the highway. Oh, and I saw a lot of Studebakers in the video. You have made my day.
When the City of San Francisco was stuck in the high Sierras, a rescue team was led in on skis by a young emigrant ski instructor. He was very shy, reluctant to be interviewed or photographed. The reason? He was an escaped German POW, who remained on the run until the 80s, when he finally turned himself in account of advancing age and health issues. He was made a US citizen, and cautioned to never do it again. Source: the book "Hitler's Last Soldier". Unfair, as he was never a Nazi or sympathizer.

Almost eighty years on and still small anecdotes about WW2 continue to emerge ! Despite a risk of being outed, he turned out to offer his skills.
