I ran the SDP45s went they were used on the early days of Amtrak. Plus the later days when they were bumped to freight service. Greatest engines ever !
I grew up in Mountain View and remember taking the Vasona Branch SP from Loyola Corners to The City - the train passed the Los Altos station, then snaked behind Gunn Highschool, crossed El Camino Real and joined up with the main SP line near the California Avenue station in Mayfield - most of the Peninsula was farm land at that time - they must have printed a lot of tickets because years after the line was abandoned in 1964 they still listed "Loyola Corners" as a destination - even today the old timers refer to CalTrain as "The SP"
The station was at 3rd and Townsend with a strong chain link fence with the red wooden slats through the fence all the way to fourth street until late 2000 to 2001. Tracks paved over on fourth and caltrain set up across the street also on 4th. The gate was always open on Townsend and all the way from the back of the station, all through the platforms and tracks, all the way to fourth they're was campers parked in there and a ton of tents and shanties. Also, at least in the bay area, train masters were plentiful and constantly and well used all over, every day, hauling huge long trains. Those engines were usually filthy and I loved seeing them. Those lasted like that all the way until the end of sp.
I love the FM H24-66 trainmaster diesels.I remember seeing one on the Jersey Central Railroad in Wilkes Barre, PA back in the early 1960s. The sound of its 12 cylinder opposed piston diesel engine is awesome!!!

The FM Trainmaster has that special vibe . Its inexplicable , it just speaks to thinking outside the box and creating a true one off achievement .
The FM Trainmaster is my all time favorite of the diesel powered locomotives .
These old diesels are more interesting than the modern ones. The modern have nearly all the same shape.

I grew up in Millbrae, and watching the commute Trainmasters are one of my fondest memories! I was already a rail fan as a young kid.

There was so much going on in the SF Bay Area, and the railroad history is incredible! Plus, so many soldiers came thru California on troop trains.

Pure heavy freight locomotives (no matter if they have passenger service modifications) pulling passenger trains is badass.
