Once they finally realized Dracula was real and the danger he presented, they should have done the one no brainer thing and abandon ship after setting it on fire DURING the day. I understand the movie obviously needed the plot to prolong the ending but when you decide to make a movie based on something or someone make sure the plot isn't just written to extend the run time b/c I swear a kid would've thought of a better idea then what the crew members were coming up with.

I am sure this summary misses some things but... what the hell do these people do all day long on the ship?! They start searching the crates... and they look through all of them before deciding, "Oh, how about this big, coffin-sized, ornate one sitting all by itself?". They don't start scuttling or turning the ship away from land as soon as they decide that plan and just get in the lifeboat and head towards London, they wait until night when they're literally 5 miles offshore? They don't have any nets or ropes or anything to disable or slow Dracula down? Super-strength or not, it's hard to pull a rope apart or fly with netting all over you.

Though Toby was the Captain's grandson, he was probably just starting his apprenticeship. He's of the age where he'd have been a cabin boy (probably what he was, as his job was to look after the animals), or powder monkey (hauling gunpowder). It was yet another touch of historical realism that had me totally loving this story.

As soon as one of those boxes broke open and a person was found inside, they probably should have started checking all the boxes to see if anyone else was inside. If they had done that, they would have discovered Dracula in plenty of time before they lost half the crew and even could have killed him by bringing his box into the sunlight.

  • @sophiacousland3452

I’d like to point out one thing when it comes to crosses, or crucifixes if you prefer. It’s not the cross/crucifix itself that holds the power to keep evil at bay, it’s the faith behind it that gives it strength. Holding up a cross/crucifix when you have no faith makes it completely useless as a deterrent, and the majority of the crew weren’t religious. Arming the crew as soon as trouble begins is a good idea but the problem is that the weapons they have are useless against vampires. The crew would need supplies and time to fashion stakes, which the crew don’t have a lot of. They only have so many hours in the day to fashion stakes on top of running the ship, and any successful plan of attack with less risk requires that they find Dracula’s hiding place early on. Would have been helpful if the crew thought to search the crates in the hold after finding Anna. Any plan of attack also should have been taken during the day, but it’s like the crew were allergic to the sun considering they had hatched every plan at night when Dracula had the advantage. Garlic is hit or miss when it comes to vampire lore, so I wouldn’t bet on garlic being a useful deterrent. I’d also like to point out that Dracula would have likely killed Anna fairly quickly if given the opportunity, so fat chance of him burning in sunlight while being distracted by feeding since dawn looked to be hours away.

I'm sure the creature that doesn't need to breathe wouldn't be bothered if it had to swim beneath the waves all day just to murder you at night in the lifeboat for trashing his ride. And its not like they could really search the boat thoroughly during the day with 6 dudes while the entire interior of the boat is both huge and dark. He can see in the dark and the best they have is lanterns. Dude could so easily just shuffle around to different spots and they'd just keep missing him. There's a reason stowaway's are a thing. You really just can hide on a big dark boat and no one will find you.

The most reasonable solution would be to grab the Dracula's coffin using the ropes to drag it onto the deck during the day. They discovered the vampire's resting place so finding it under sunlight wouldn't be an issue and the sun would protect them from Dracula. After seeing what sun did to Orgaen it's safe to assume that Dracula would be incinerated as well. So, putting his coffin on the top deck and opening it so that the sunlight instantly hits him is the only valid solution

@@e.t.2914 I can agree with this to an extent. The dirt would make it almost impossible to move the box, but what they could have done was slowly move it over by any mean to where sunlight can go inside the coffin break open the area more for the sunlight to be on full blast. After doing that, if they did it fast enough for sunlight to still be up, the crew could have lit the ship on fire before opening the coffin and GTFO. Dracula would have nowhere to go and his only choice is to burn along with the ship.

So a few things. I wanna say,
    1. I do enjoy all these How To Beat channels. But they're going about it all completely wrong.
    2. I'd like to know what they'd do IN THAT SITUATION. The movie takes place way before internet and all our modern stuff. So they gotta remember, the woman is probably the only servant of Drac. And they still don't know what her abilities are. Yes she has a mental connection with Drac, but that just means they're connected. They don't know if he's tracking them through her, if he knows what she's always up to or anything else. So using her to track him down would probably just end in their deaths too.
    3. So they're going about it all wrong if they're talking about how to beat Drac in that time, but if now. Well It's easy, modern ships have metal doors and such which Drac probably wouldn't be able to bust open. And not like they'll have water guns to load with holy water. Which holy water need to be blessed by a man of God. And garlic, I'm sure they wouldn't have enough to give around and you'll still need to be close for it to do harm towards Drac.
    4. (I've been watching and writing these as I go along and I'm at 19 37) the grandfather and kid, we don't know their full story. Most likely their parents wouldn't let their kid go. It's also possible the kid ran away or the kids parents are dead. And the Grandfather probably has many years of experience to protect the kid.
    5. The trap, I did absolutely no research and didn't know anything about the mind communication powers. And I knew Drac would know as well because of her.

I understand where you are coming from but the movie shows proof that they burn in daylight. Before the final showdown, they've had 2 people die from burning after they turned. They found his crib at night "when he was out hunting". They never see him during the day. As a result, a doctor who graduated from Cambridge University and probably had to work harder than the other students in order to graduate, should absolutely be able to connect the dots that sunlight hurts/kills them. As a result, they could figure out a way to use that to their advantage.
The movie takes an approach of a "biological" monster that cannot be hurt by Christianity and they know this. The cook literally died while doing nothing but praying all the time. The boat comes back with blood all over the bible so they'd know that. Plus in the final scene, (which credit to them, they wouldn't know because the battle happens before that), the captain dies while trying to turn back Dracula with a crucifix.
Lastly, the "mental connection" was such a stupid point. It wasn't even alluded to until the final battle happened and had zero impact on the plot anyways. Dracula killed the guys in the crows nest first, then the captain, then attacked Colman, then attacked the chick with the "connection". It was like the writers of the show just added that point to make their terrible plan seem like it might work "but oh no! Fog rolled in. Plan won't work. Shoot!".
Not sure why they made the kid the captain's grandkid and added zero backstory. He was only there to form a connection with the main character so that he'll "feel something" when he died.

    • @YoullNever
      @YoullNever 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@certifiedredditgenius Yeah the Christianity thing didn't work but the thing is they didn't know that, for all they knew he probably went out trying to fight them. Not saying it should've worked because each movie can say what they want.
And the fire thing, yes it's best to assume that and they were right so. But lot of people probably would've assumed or thought he was like a bat or some other predator that hunts during the night. So if anything they should've just thrown out the stranger boxes and lit them on fire and tossed them overboard. That way if the fire doesn't kill him the sun would. Or just load whatever cargo on to the safety rafts and burn the boat.
As for the Grandfather and kid, obviously I never lived back then and without doing any research, I'm sure that probably happened a few times. A caption bringing his kid or grandkid with him to travel. Which some might use the fact the kid wasn't afraid (and if the movie showed if the kid knew the boat or crew well enough).

This is what I would do alternatively
    1) Bells and whistles - I would demand the crew wear a bell around their neck or around their ankle so any distress be identified with loud clanging of the bells . I would also give each one of them a whistle that could easily be made with excess wood and metal tools .I'd also teach those who do not know how to whistle . A sailors whistle is a very shrill and easy to identify and could be heard from the cargo bows of the ship . I would advise the men to whistle should they have discovered this monster laying in wait or if they discover one of the men away from his post . And I might just set dracula's bed on fire or desecrate it just to spite him .
    2) Bait - I would wait until there was no more than 2 hours left to sunrise and ask the bravest one amongst them to volunteer as bait . I would approach this with either two ways one being vietcong type punji stick traps smeared with feces and urine to guarantee an infection or I would use the 5 men as riflemen and riddle the beast with holes . I would also consider a cage like trap where the bait who is almost certain to face death would lure dracula into the cage and with that I would shut the door and hold him there at least until sunrise.
    3) Spiritual aspect - If the ship's cook was religious he should have tried casting or banishing the demon to hell . In the past Jesus Christ used spiritual authority to bind and banish demons the very same authority christians have . All it would have take was faith the size of a mustard seed .
    4) British Royal Navy - I would steer the ship to a known location of the royal navy and explain it to them in words that were not particularly to the likes of a lunatic . I would say that we found an "exotic rabies infected creature that comes out at night " .And I would explain the contemporary situation and use the mighty cannons the royal navy has to offer to sink this infested boat .
    5) Pirates - As they were sailing through the mediterranean I would willfully sail through pirate infested waters . And once I was raided by pirates I would peacefully surrender the ship and ask for 6 days of ration and water and to allow us to leave using the lifeboats . Ever since roman times there were always a fleet of Mediterranean galleys that were raiding roman convoys and this was a frequent occurrence even in the 1800's . And I'd be doing society a favor by simultaneously reducing piracy and confining dracula in a sunny place .
    6) Explosives - I would rig a certain part of the ship with all the gunpowder the ship had to offer . And I would lure dracula there and then trigger the bomb . And then I would send the entirety of the crew to finish him off with knives ,pickaxes or whatever they had left .
    7) Poison - I would hand every one a glass cyanide capsule so if dracula was intent on killing one particular person . Let that person chew the cyanide and poison dracula as well or at least significantly weaken him and then clobber him to death or wait until sunrise or both .

1: Decent idea, but Dracula is very intelligent and it would only last 1-2 times.
2: Once again, intelligent. And 2 hours? It can literally kill them at any time.
3: Dracula isn't a demon, he a monster. In the original tale he was weakened by crosses. This version has no such weakness.
4: Oh good, now Dracula has thralls with guns.
5: Dracula takes place in 1897. Piracy in the Mediterranean had all but stopped after the destruction of the Barbary states in 1830 and even if they found of the very few left they would have just a good of a chance because Dracula is a monster that can only be beaten when in a weakened state. Plus, pirates usually do not want confrontation and rather they try to get surrender by intimidation.
      6: Once again, very intelligent.
7: Dracula is not human. In the original story he is already dead. Plus, would a bunch of traders have cyanide on them?
The best way to beat Dracula is to find where he sleeps and attack him in the day, just like what was done in the original book. Open them up and dump every crate into the ocean. Burn the ship in the daytime. Do not let anyone else get involved because that's more bodies and potential thralls. Worse case scenario find a small remote island and scuttle the ship on it. Everyone will probably die, but Dracula with either burn in the flames, by the sun in this version, or die from lack of blood supply.

@@VariaBug Response to No 2) This dracula is more of an animal than a human . Notice how he attacks only when he notices one of the crewmen by themselves or in solace. He may be intelligent but he is a slave to his instinct and appetite.
Response 4) In 1897 not much was know about several species. I don't see how dracula could make a thrall of a naval soldier. It would be believable. In the morning the group should have armed forces at their disposal searching for dracula while he sleeps . In the event he isn't found they could simply burn the ship down . But there is strength in numbers . I would calculate it with a course reaching the Royal Navy only in the morning sun . Otherwise he would move onto them .
      5) It is worth an attempt. This dracula fellow resembles a demon and resembles the likeness of one . And some of his strengths are nearly supernatural.
      6) being intelligent is no immunity to traps .
      5) Pirates in their territorial waters don't mind a fight . And it'd be an easy option .
      7) Well that's true cyanide was scarce but some ships had them if they were captured.
Overall your idea was smart to maroon the ship on a tiny island but it would also be a death sentence to the crew and even throwing crates out guarantees death because they would be throwing out rations, medicine and goods which could incur a penalty if accused of theft by the owners .

@@indoroyale78482. Dracula still showed higher level thought. And and picking out one by one plus how he acted in the end shows that he isn't as much an animal as you may think. Plus we do not know how much Dracula needs to feed.
      4. Its shown that a single bite can turn a person into a thrall/proto-vampire. Also the Captain was influenced like Renfield but that wasn't as powerful. Plus it is stated that Dracula does not fear guns and the crew was taken out at the end. Plus. This isn't the modern day. You can't calculate a course to a Navy ship without either knowing one is there or being in direct sight, AKA most likely well within Dracula's flying range. Also, the most likely place to find another ship would be by a port, aka a town with a bunch of ships that would make this whole situation start all over.
      3. In the time period they would make the attempt, but in hindsight facing Dracula in this way is foolish as its shown he doesn't have supernatural weaknesses like his original version. Only sunlight.
      6. Makes it pretty damn hard to trap him though. The only time Dracula was immobilized was with the mast and that was an accident. Also, the interior of the ship has very little sunlight. And I would not bet on Dracula needing to sleep. So unless I have UV lamps or Solar Simulators the area is the dead zone that I want no part of.
      5. Pirates generally don't have territorial waters, they go were the money is. In this time period Piracy was mainly focused in Asia. Pirates act like Predators, they don't go after things that are armed and they don't want a fight because they could die or even worse, be caught. Privateers might go after bigger fish as they are engaging in asymmetrical warfare, but Pirates are in it for money, not dying.
Also, your dealing with a monster, the natural predators for humans, on a small boat in the middle of the ocean. And in this situation, you have nobody who knows about Vampires. In the original book the only issue was the health of Lucy and Mina after their attacks. But overall they had many more options plus the closest thing to an expert with Van Helsing. Here, Dracula wants to go to London. You can't beat him, you can't negotiate with him, and once he gets what he wants you going to be a meal either way. At that point living though it is a miracle and should not be expected. The only thing you could reasonably do is either delay or better yet outright stop Dracula from reaching a population center, especially one as like London with a large population of "undesirables" littering the streets and ghettos. You could have a vampiric plague depending if the thralls are proto-vampires and can turn people themselves, or how long it takes a thrall to become a true vampire. The goal is not for you to win, its for Dracula to lose.

Look, the movie had more than a handfull of plot holes and illogical dealings but I love it. I can't explain it, it worked for me. The Dracula design was cool, I liked it and despite being animalistic in the end we still got a hint of the debonaire, charismatic count (although still looking kinda rough). I thought the scenes were well made and Dracula was sufficently creepy and threatening at the same itme. The actors I thought did well, Clemens was cool as a main protagonist, Anna was nice, the crew had a fairh share of likble personalities that you were sad to see go and the flow of events was nice. I didn't feel the movie draggin the slightest. I don't know if I can call it scary but was a damn nice moive. Shame it bombed I would've totally been on board for the hinted sequel.
Perhaps I'm giving it too much credit because I absolutely love the idea of the script. First Alien but on a ship is a cool concept. 2nd Dracula's jounrey to UK is a small detail but hints at a cool set-up, one which I beleive this movie and the BBC Dracula mini-series did justice ot. And lastly the design and the way scenes were shot perfectly delivered the tone and the creepiness one would expect.
Loved the movie, loved the How to BEat on it as it points out the main issues with the movie. Why didn't they come up with ane xplanation what happened durning the day and why did they keep insisting on facing Dracula at night, idk.... but in the end of the day we need to have a movie so some suspension of dissbelief is expect. We can just chalk it to them not being super sure he can't go out at light, even after seeing his victims burn in sunlight, idk.

Okay, so they see guys go up in smoke after being attacked by the Count, and they _don't_ start hunting down that thing during the day, when they know it isn't actively hunting because...? Literally the only thing it would take to beat Dracula is a couple of deckhands dragging his coffin out into daylight and cracking it open- and they have ALL DAY to do it. We already know this isn't the literary Dracula, because in the books, sunlight didn't hurt him or his creations, it only weakens. But even if it was, he'd be weakened enough for them to just jump him and put an end to the madness. Hell, they didn't even have to do that much! They could've just loaded up the lifeboats and set the ship on fire on their way out, which would force Dracula out into sunlight anyway.
In the books, Dracula managed to make the journey to London because he was a good deal more subtle in his feedings- at first, anyway. Initially, they thought the crew caught some kind of wasting sickness, very likely scurvy (which was both common at the time, and would reasonably explain a good deal of what was wrong with people who had been fed on- including the signature bite marks. Petechiae is a symptom of scurvy). Dracula only began bumping people off directly once he was close enough to London for a change of course to be more or less meaningless.

His emaciated state was him going into hibernation for the voyage, and he becomes younger and human-looking when fully fed. On land, he had access to his money and people to feed on, so he looks like a wealthy human.

But this is 1897. The year "Dracula" was first published. It's nearly impossible any of them would have read it, IF they're literate at all. So unless the crew were Romanians, they wouldn't connect the dots. This crew would dismiss the warnings as superstition.

You are mistaken on so many levels xD. Tales of vampires are present in the human culture for literally thousands of years, dating back to Mesopotamia. Descriptions vary, but the main points are similar. Sure, they do not always seems like the modern vampires, and yes, the book, and fashion that followed popularized, and romanticized them. Simple folk back then had not much of entertainment, and folk stories were one of such things to pass time + people were more keen to believe in supernatural back then.
You seem to be Polish, so you should know that "vampires" existed also in the Slavic culture, their Polish variation was named strzyga, which was inspired by strix from the Ancient Rome.
Sure, an average person of the time might not know all of that, but we have a whole ship of them. Someone would have known.

As Mina was cured of her curse, that means Dracula was destroyed. So you are close, and if he was only stabbed in the chest the blade could have been removed, but not being stabbed in the heart while being decapitated.

If all I had was what information they was given I wouldn't wait for nightfall to fight back instead i would turn the ship away from any known landmass dumping all his boxes overboard as we went except the special one which would be put in a lifeboat rigged with gunpowder to explode if opened. Then drop anchor get on a lifeboat of our own taking turns rowing by night fall either he is at the bottom of the ocean with the ship or flying around in the sky with no life within miles. May not be able to confirm the kill but if the cards are stacked in the favor I'll take it as a W

They don't know the lore about vampires. Ana is a simple villager who just knows he's an evil monster. Clemens is a doctor, but he doesn't know much about this. The only reason they knew what to do in the original novel was because of Van Helsing's research.

As soon as we realized what was happening, I’d have taken advantage of daylight, stocked the lifeboats, set the ship on fire, and started rowing.
