Homemade Postbox Delivery Indicator

  • I made this parcel & letter postbox that hangs on the back of the garden wall so we don't have to open the garden gate whenever we want to check the original postbox for mail. With a young dog, the worry of him getting hurt on the busy road was too risky, so a postbox that could be emptied from inside the garden was the goal.
With the miserable weather we have been having lately and a postman that comes throughout the day, I felt I needed to further develop the idea so I could clearly see if any post was ready for collection from the comfort of the house. Thus the automatic postbox delivery indicator was born. :-)

You should patent this design. We have dogs and when things sre thrown in yard one dog likes to open up the packages so we are constantly watching online to see exactly when packages will arrive. We do this with rain and large packages, too. This would save us time and protect the packages. I'd definately buy this if produced for sale.

Very kind of you to say.
You can buy big metal parcel boxes. A friend has one bolted to the front of his house. It has some kind of flap on the inside, so once a parcel drops inside, it can't be taken out without a key. Google this for garden walls:

Thank you. With hinges under the lid, this allows the lid to extend across the top of the box. Now when the front of the lid is lifted to post mail, the back edge of the lid goes down.
The back edge of the lid travels past the pivot point of the flag arm, pushing it down, raising the longer flag end. It stays up due to friction created by penny washes and spring washers along the pivot bolt. Lose enough to lift up, but stiff enough not to drop back down.
It's about 7-years old now and still going strong, though only last week, I made a new plywood lid. Despite annual repainting, moisture did get between the laminations and started splitting the lid. Marine ply was the answer, but I wasn't prepared to spend £70 for an 8' x 4' sheet of marine ply, so I'll probably need to make another lid in 7 years time!

Four years on and still going strong. The drop on our side of the wall is longer than arms reach, so quite difficult to pull anything out. You could make the post box longer still to make it harder or make it boot or zig jag shaped so that post cannot be seen when looking down.
Another option would be to fit a spring loaded flap inside around a foot from the bottom, allowing post to fall through, but to stop it from easily being pulled out. We have had no problems though and the indicator lets us know when there is post in the box, so we just pop out and get it, so post isn't in there for long!
