Absence of violence? Guy stabbed in eye. Guy tries to rob possibly rape girl. Plane crashes everyone dies except main character. I would say relatively little violence.
Not quite. I not only second all that @BrettonFerguson pointed out, I'll raise him that Cecilia co-opting "Boss" Carter's free will [31:50] at the "Resistance is futile, you WILL be assimilated!" level is violent initiation of force. man, i am so glad i didn't give up on it because of the subtitles at the beginning. this was awesome. great story, solid acting, just an all around good film. the only complaint i have, is that it wasn't longer. this would make an interesting tv series.
I watched it with French subtitles and it's French, but just the literal word for word translation. Some of it doesn't make much sense because the wrong definition of a word was used or the expression wasn't properly translated. It's probably best not to have subtitles than to have them like this. But the film is very well done.

This was beyond all doubt the best short film I have ever seen and is better than nearly every film I have ever seen in theaters. If only this was a full length feature, I'd pay money to see this on the big screen.
Well, Mr. Penna, I have seen many time travel sequencers. This one is unique for not having the usual over and over jumps to tidy countless events up. Of course, they all have substantial narratives to final conjunctions. Truly remarkable for its passage and meaning behind. A piece of art, bravo...

This has to be one of the best shorts I have ever seen. You took two hours worth of feature film quality story and did an excellent job of compressing it into 41 minutes. Nothing was lost, from the writing of the story to the acting and filming this was a class A job. Well done to your whole team.
First, totally captivating: the story, the characters, the whole execution of this work. Second, time travel stories usually get so convoluted and never work themselves out in such a satisfying way as this one. I love this film!
I first saw this years ago and loved it immediately. I rewatch it every so often - skipping or fast forwarding through nothing - because of how good it is. It ranks as one of my all time favorite short films and I could not be happier with how well it was made. The story is astounding, compelling to watch and full of suspense, and is absolutely a thrill even though its direction and destination is no longer a mystery to me. The story flows smoothly and answers the questions it sets up neatly. There are story threads that receive no follow up, but that is a product of good storytelling. You care about other characters and are interested in where they go, but you don't need to see the end of their journeys. I love things like this that are static and stand-alone. It's a story that you can enjoy and finish without being left wanting. It ends with a greater sense of completion than almost everything else I've ever seen. To me, it is greater than many full-length feature films on the market today. I would have gladly paid to see it a dozen times over.
This was well written, directed and acted. A real plot with no evasive undermining of the outcome. Direct and to the point with nothing but one conclusion. Bravo to the cast, to the author and all the staff who made a well rounded story of time.
I can't wait to see more short films like this. WOW I am finding it difficult to express my positive thoughts about this film, the creators really have a greater view of our purpose here on earth.

Brilliance. Absolute Brilliance. Joe Penna, you need to become an actual director, because this movie could easily be shown in theaters. I'd love to see it there.
I haven’t adequate words... this is epic - a complete movie in so few minutes - everything was top-notch, from acting to audio, to the fantastic plot. Bravo!
This was a beautiful story that left me full in a way most Hollywood films don't. It didn't need explosions, long, running battle-scenes or pointless "romance" thrown in to keep the hormonal guys engaged. Forgive me but SPOILERS AHEAD (well, some little, some larger): The romance was taken care of with the sweet "Highlander" styled clip of the Immortal and the French girl with no fuss, no sloppy cringe-worthy kisses, just a plain, hello-meeting under a tree and her quiet, poignant passing in their home. The quiet note of his continuance of his ancient tradition of the yearly tattoos slowly creeping up his arm, then continuing to his other arm was a nice touch. When he realizes that there really was no villain at all, and that his own very existence was needed as a boon to humanity was gorgeous. The girl gaining that odd ability from her cure for her palsy was a strange twist and makes me wonder if other people will be experiencing similar effects. All in all, a lovely little film.
I have come back to watch this film so many times every single year since release, still so amazing. I really admire the work of Joe Penna, and how he can create all of this with such a small budget. Really well done :D

wow! Awmazing movie, brilliant acting, a great story and would love to see more, this needs to be a series where he chases after what that book is really about, maybe the 2 of them team up and save the universe etc, such potentials! Great work, love these short movies, theya re so much better than all that hollywood crap!
WOW! I'm seriously impressed. Fantastic story, well-written, well-acted, directed, and shot. A small cinematic masterpiece hiding in the corners of TH-cam.
An ageless Bruce Willis. . . Okay, even with my quip, this was one of the best movies (short or long) I have ever seen!!! It actually made me think in a similar way I did with the movie, "Arrival", but even more in depth. I'm really wowed by it.
If I had to make a list of the Top 5 shorts I’ve *ever* seen regardless of genre/platform, Beyond would absolutely be on it. This was incredible. The story, character arc, cinematography, narration, acting, screenplay, etc. is better than anything I’ve seen on network TV in well over a decade. Absolutely spectacular work. As an aside, there is something I feel compelled to point out. I almost feel bad mentioning it because it’s insignificant to everything I mentioned above. If this occurred in 99.99% of YT shorts, I wouldn’t even mention it. But this is such an *incredible* piece of work I think pointing it out the attention to detail may constructively help future work from this filmmaker.. At 12:01, the year was identified as 1967. At 14:21 (as we are seeing the same scene from the other character’s perspective) the year was identified as 1969. As I said before, in the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing major. In fact, the *only* reason I even noticed it at all was because of how enthralled I was and wanted to make sure I didn’t miss *any* detail regardless of how small/insignificant it might have been. But overall this was fkn amazing. Well done.
Oh my gosh I didn’t realise that this was THE mystery guitar man, what a blast from the past! I remember your channel from the early TH-cam days, what a pleasant surprise stumbling across this master piece and across you again. It’s been at least 10-11 years since I thought of the muster guitar man channel! Thank you for this film, amazing.
This was incredible. Very moving and eye opening. I got the message that Sometimes we have to stop allowing intense feelings of anger dictate our lives because while we are engulfed in that fog - we miss out on all of the bigger picture. Letting such rage create tunnel vision, eats away at the human soul - it is a taker of free will and positive energy until the only thing that remains is a hollowed out heart driven by a passion for revenge. Once we find the strength to put those malicious intentions to the side - we can gain clarity like we never knew & we can learn things that may suprise us. Mental/ emotional/ spiritual Clarity can have the power to open doors we overlooked in anger....the same doors that ultimately allow our broken souls closure & the chance to rectify wrongs.
I like how he starts off as a pupil of Benedict of Nursia, at Monte Cassino... where he finds a "mysterious" auto-injector; Then his story extends through the ages. The Byzantine era, feudal France, etc. My earliest judgements of this whole film were that it posed a major question: Would you want to be immortal/mortal..? That decision is a "double-edged blade" Overall, a good story to me.!. :D (Btw, I understand the references because I research ALOT of things... mainly history.)
+Ben Skelly It depends on meaning, purpose and context of life and/or perception of eternity. Immortality in a fallen world be unfulfilling. Immortality in an unbroken and untainted world, would always be enough.
Immortality would indeed be a curse. Hell, a 300-year lifespan would be enough to be torturous. This is a topic most have never taken the time to investigate properly. Intuitively, it naively and narcissistically strikes us with a sense of "sure! why not!?" But plenty of philosophers and deep-thinkers have thoroughly evaluated such scenarios and, spoiler alert, our instincts are massively wrong. Spend 15 minutes reading about it and you'll know quickly come to grips with just how fucked such a situation would be.
Something you and "plenty of philosophers and deep-thinkers" have no category from which to make any valid conclusions.I would say "speak for yourself", but in your limited humanity, you cannot.
Jason Gabler In your limited humanity you have failed to understand that I was speaking for myself. It's got to be hard though making sense of things when carrying around so much narcissism. You'll be free of the burden soon enough.
This was a very long " Short" film but wonderfully put together and had lots of story line changes to keep you enthralled but by the end you get it. So different to anything I have watched before. So glad I got to see this one, Thank You.

You need more funding so you can make even better longer movies like this one. This could easily have been a very successful 2hour long movie if you had the backing of a wealthy company to fund it. All in all 10/10
All I need is $3.50
God DAMN! It's the God damn Loch Ness monstah!
Its perfect as it is.
Loved it. At last a film exploring time-travel that isn't the usual, dull dystopic vision. Well-researched and believable, to boot.
Awesome really, great film, when i start seeing i couldn't take my eyes of the screen for 1 second completely awesome good job guys this is a outstanding short film way better that many movies of big companies, completely amazing great job to you all, that many more like this one can be done guys good luck you have all that you need to success :)
i watch the film from Portugal and the part that i liked more has when he realized that it was him that started all and was with peace with him self, but i kinda that imagine that something like that would happen
Thank you all for creating and developing this perfect short film BEYOND its a completely perfect short film it has that a real film needs, great job
This was extremely beautiful. You earned yourself another subscriber. :)
I am impressed as a science fiction fan of over 50 years I have never enjoyed a story more. Thank you.
Beautifully done. Reminds me of Jorge Luis Borges 'Book of Sand' for the time paradox / loop ...
(Watching from Melbourne Australia)
Fantastic Story, very non sci-fi but sci-fi! I really enjoyed this short film and thought it was well crafted and entertaining!
Well done.
That was grade A entertainment right there.
That app he was playing actually looked pretty fun
VayMatt I'm really considering making it into a real game!
I have always said to people that it is the story that counts and the storyteller that makes it real. Really a great job loved it.
Really good, very well written and acted out.
New favorite short!
Wow such a well thought out piece, bravo.
Wanna know how we pulled off this production? Here's a look behind the scenes: bit.ly/BeyondBTS1
Parabéns. Gostei muito.
***** Make a video with your old pals like Destorm, SupRicky, Rhett and Link etc.like you did back in 2009/2010. Kind of like a TBT video.

(Btw, I understand the references because I research ALOT of things... mainly history.)
There's obviously much more to this film than my first "judgements!"
Here's another look at the making of BEYOND! bit.ly/BeyondBTS2
That was truly incredible. Well done. Seriously, I can’t believe I found something like this on TH-cam.
"Share this with five people or Joe won't let me go home . . . Seriously." *****
Okay.. correct me if I am wrong, but did I just spot MysteryGuitarMan/Joe at 29:37 ?
That was definitely him
+Lauren de Graaf yep haha!!!!
This was a very long " Short" film but wonderfully put together and had lots of story line changes to keep you enthralled but by the end you get it. So different to anything I have watched before. So glad I got to see this one, Thank You.
