    ASEAN is well aware of the actions of the Americans in its spat with China. The region prioritizes peace and prosperity, understanding that a war in Southeast Asia would disrupt the region's peace and security. Many Southeast Asian countries count China as their largest trading partner, making it unwise and self-destructive to provoke a conflict. The Philippines stand out negatively in this regard, repeatedly seeking to align themselves as puppets to the Americans.

    Don’t generalize! Other surveys show that the Philippines and Vietnam have very negative views of China. So, this so called tilt of ASEAN towards China refers only to some countries in the region, not the region as a whole.

    • @zachary261
      @zachary261 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      A few months ago, Vietnam and China signed 37 agreements related to their sea disputes. When asked why, the Vietnamese government official just replied point blank "We trust China more than the US." CNA's report on ASEAN's tilt towards China is valid, largely because of US support of Israel in the war in Gaza. If water cannons are so bad and unforgivable, I would imagine the hundreds killed during the Philippine-American war using real bullets would've been a grim reminder of that unequal relationship. I think the Philippines is right about its claims in the WPS, but I can also understand China's moves in light of US involvement. This is a bigger geopolitical fight, one that should've been resolved through bilateral talks. If Vietnam could come to an agreement with China, why can't the Philippines?

      Singapore, the smartest country, as well as the most successful one in ASEAN, has been playing smart geopolitical balancing games between super powers for decades, for the maximum benefit of the country, without being squeezed and sacrificed as cannon fodder by the US or China.
      Filipino people always look at the success of Singapore with envy, and wonder why they can't replicate the best practices in their homeland and why their country is still deeply trapped in US colony mentality without a clear way out.
      Truth hurts. A smart leader plays smart geopolitical games and invites American and Chinese companies to build factories in order to generate jobs and increase revenue, while a clueless leader easily gets emotional like a kid, often is played by geopolitical players as chess pieces, invites foreign military to build bases in order to generate tensions and increase the risk of conflicts, and sacrifices the country's development and trade.
      Japan and S. Korea can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display.
      Other countries such as China and the Philippines can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on South China Sea, Taiwan, MILF or whatever, and develop their relationship.
      Now Even the leaders of Vietnam and Malaysia are much smarter, more resilient and pragmatic than P-Noy and BBM. Now the Philippines is the only ASEAN member that foolishly puts itself into current awkward position of either losing face or breaking stability in ASEAN.
      Soon, even Laos and Cambodia will become richer than the Philippines. The Philippines will compare better than only Myanmar.
