Destroyed Nippy Drill Vise Restoration

- Welcome back to another video! This time I'm tackling an absolutely destroyed Nippy branded drill vice. This is quite an early model as one of the jaws had the remnants of the original makers stamp ( Jones & Shipman). The company was taken over by Record at some point but I think it was after this one was made,not 100% sure.
I could have spent an eternity working on this piece to get it perfect, but I got it to a point that I'm happy with and left it at that, the more I welded and ground back, the less of the original material was left, so I decided to stop filling and call it a day after a while. I really struggled finding replacement screws for this and as I don't have a lathe I couldn't make new ones. I ended up buying some allen head cap screws but I intend on replacing them with the correct cheese head screws at some point, just didn't fancy paying more for the screws shipped from the states than I paid for the vice :D!
More restorations coming soon so if you like what you see subscribe for more. My next restoration (see end of vid) is going to take a while so I might slip a smaller project in between now and the that one.
I'm not a professional, these are not tutorials, and I don't claim and never will claim to be an expert at this. I'm just a regular guy messing around and enjoying his hobby. I am in the process of restoring some of my gramps engineering tools that I was lucky enough to inherit and a nippy vice is one of them.
I struggled so hard separating the jaw from the threaded bar, in the end I heated it up until it almost glowed which done the trick, it was a last resort as I was petrified of bending the bar!
Mine too has the makers mark on the jaw as well.

Looks like either high school kids or apprentices learnt their drilling techniques on it. I guess it got to the point where it was more hole than vice, so they chucked it out. Amazing job, Mate, that was just little more than a lump of scrap metal when you started.
I couldn't quite tell from the thumbnail, once I got a good look at the damage I was sure parts of this were write-offs but man was I wrong! Brilliant job, you went more than the extra mile and truly brought this back from the brink... we say that a lot in restorations but sooo true here!

I can dig it. Nothing over the top, just restored to something a commoner would use in his shop. Restored to be used! Can’t wait for the disc sander.

I was going to say whst numpty owned that, school kids would be a good candidate. Shame we don't have corporal punishment in school anymore, but accidentally dropping the vice on a kids foot would serve.
Yes definitely, it looks like the vice at my school, I’ve seen kids just drill into it for no reason.

What have you and every other Restoration video person on TH-cam have against securing your tools/work to the table to prevent it from moving? Incredibly dangerous! Love the videos, hate the disregard for safety.
Thomas Van Driel I don’t think I’m overly unsafe, quite often I will have a different set up when I’m taking shots compared to when I’m actually carrying out the bulk of the work, clamps etc can get in the way of the shot! It does annoy me when my vice moves around but I haven’t decided where I want it to live yet...

This wasnt a "Restoration" it was a Revival!! That thing was Dead!!!! Lol was the previous owner a Blind and trying to drill a record amount of holes in a vise? Lol Beautiful Job! I cant imagine how many hours you spent filing that weld flat. You out did yourself. I truly didnt think that vise could be saved! But you did it. Brilliant work mate! Cheers.

Whitworth cap and machine screws, bolts and nuts are readily available in the UK. Google is your friend
Can I just ask, please would you secure your vise to the bench? Watching you file down with a loose vise made me think you’re wasting time because you can’t get a full stroke on the material. Otherwise, great restoration.
Nice job. Someone really abused that thing for an extended period. If you ever get jammed up on screw pitches, length, etc.; you can get some threaded rod and make the caps yourself. Or, simply fill them in with weld and tap them to a more convenient thread pitch for your part of the world. I like how you tried to keep it original. Considering the shape it was in; quite difficult. Nevertheless, very nice restore on a difficult subject matter.

- *why are both the grinder motor* (for polishing and brushing) *and the vice not mounted to the table*
- why didnt you make the top surfaces of the small vice (not the sliding surfaces) flat too?

Did you consider a light skim with a milling machine just to tidy up the bed of the vice? Draw filing might have helped too.
Not everyone has a milling machine, and to find a company willing to do small jobs at a reasonable price isn’t easy

I do use flap discs most of the time, this disc was on the grinder from the last job I did on my car so I just rolled with it 😂

Greetings from the U.S.A.Try a supplier of British motorcycle parts for the cheese head Whitworth screws. Norton timing cover used them.
If you are going to do a lot of restorations, involving welding build up, I'd recommend getting a milling machine.
BedsitBob if I had the space I’d already have one! My current workshop is tiny, we are thinking about moving house in the next year or so and big workshop is top of my list! Probably won’t have anymore space though as I’ll just fill it with bigger projects 😂

Its criminal how some people treat their drill press vices. in good condition those Nippy vices are fetching around a hundred quid on ebay.
Has Hammerite blue changed colour? I never used to like it but seen a few resto videos now where it looks quite nice.
Midnight Joker thanks man. This colour is hammered blue, has a nice effect. Standard blue is probably closer to the original colour of the vice but I love the hammered effect finishes 👍
@@sparesorrepair9118 Thanks. I've been using Roundel Blue from Paragon paints, which is the record colour. Think I'll do a couple of the hammered blue now though.

This is a schools' special. There are hundreds of these things still in service in schools - ours were in the same miserable condition after forty years. Curently one (in unmarked condition) for sale on eBay asking £200. Hahahahaha!

This vise was made from cast iron. How could you weld it?
"Cast iron" can refer to different things. In a machine tool, what you're often looking at is cast _ductile_ iron(aka. black iron), not the metal used for old cast iron cookware(aka. grey iron).
Not convinced about the white background to Nippy, otherwise great restoration!
Iazarus To be honest I’m not sure about it myself, in my head it looked much better but I think it’s probably a bit too much. I’ll see if it grows on me but I imagine it’ll be getting removed and left blue if not!
This was my only 'gripe' as well. A minor one, as everything else is awesome.
I always thought these vice main body was cast iron? By the way the UK is not metric BSF, BSW, BA, BSF etc are all still available including the American versions

I have a vice like it in the workshop, that anyone can can use, then after purchasing a Bison 4” machine vice that has a quick release lever for the final locking of the product, I will not share it about the workshop after people who shall not be named, started to pepper pot the top , that was soon stopped,

You’ve put the wrong screws in it to replace the ones on top as they are sticking up too much
Read the description for full details, but I couldn’t find exact replacements at the time, I have since ordered the correct length cheese head screws and will be fitting them as soon as they arrive! The screws sticking out wouldn’t affect the use of the item though
theres one like this on ebay currently , in nearly as bad condition , i chickened out from buying it ........

To my knowledge Murray Son ltd made Nippy vice's and not Record,i own a Nippy myself and it clearly has Murray Son ltd stamped into the jaws,Murray Son ltd might have made castings for Record at some point but i don't think they were ever bought out by Record like Woden and Parkinson were,also Whitworth thread is the worlds first national standard thread, BSW (British Standard Whitworth) so in the UK we still have a fair bit of Whitworth knocking about on old equiptment, you can still buy it, you just need to know where to get it thats all.
haemhorrhoidian cheers for the info, I did a bit of research before and found a site stating that record distributed the vices and had a lot to do with the company in the later days, just presumed they’d bought them out. This one had Jones and shipman jaws on it, but that vice was a different design casting, I’m thinking this one came from a college or something and they chopped and changed parts from different vices over the years.
I have loads of spare BSW fixings laying around but for the life of me I couldn’t find any cheese head screws for sale! If you have a link to where I could get some I’d really appreciate it, would love to put the proper screws in it rather than the UNC cap heads I used
@@sparesorrepair9118 Well thats very interesting,you learn something new every day indeed,i personally have 2 Nippy type vice's,one of them is a real Nippy by Murray Sons and Co,the other is a Jones and Shipman without the Nippy casting so we certainly have a cross over with your vice :-) it wouldn't surprise me at all if Record did buy them both out,it wouldn't have been the first time they followed that practice.
Now i did some digging about and there happens to be a ton of sellers on Ebay who stock BSW,there's one particular seller who has 1/4" x 1 1/2" BSW BZP Cheese heads in stock :-) just copy and past the size into Ebay ;-) chips as cheap too,i'll probably stick them in my watch list for spares so's to speak.

@@sparesorrepair9118 np :-) you got me thinking actually,i own a small lathe and thought i could use it to make BSW when it becomes scarce,there's bound to be sizes people need but can't get hold of,i also thought about my soon to be milling machine and refurbing old vices,it would be quite easy to mill out the bed after welding,i'll have to start buying up old Nippy's and get on Ebays selling game!! ;-)
