    Even just 1$ a month, comes out to the same as Binge-watching like 400+ of me Videos every month.
    My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
    I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

    Being modular, I used to be able to break one down totally in under a minute for cleaning and problem resolution , one bloke pissed me off, so I dismantled his 50z and just left all the parts on his desk for the next day, he was VERY nice after that :)

    Speaking of mechanics, a local shop here has a alignment machine from the early 90's. Still runs off an old 486 computer. It has proprietary software that can't run off newer machines, so when/ if the computer fails completely, the machine is basically scrap metal.

    There's something wrong with me. Yesterday on my way to work, I saw an Opel Omega A in Cologne, the boring old late eighties Pampers Bomber style family car, and I enjoyed the sight. For one of the local routes here, the Deutsche Bahn railway peeps reactivated and renovated a train from around 1970, and I love it. I never owned a car that was younger than 10 years and to my left I right now look at my C64 and the 3D-printed model of a Cray1.
    And I love that clunky old PS/2 PC. I know it's practically useless, but that "Plonk!" when you throw the switch…
    Fun fact: I had the idea to design a 1:10th scale model of a cray 2 as case for a Raspberry Pi cluster a while ago, which started me thinking how many Raspberry Pi 3s it would take to actually match the calculating power of a Cray 2. The result was a bit shocking. If I remember the numbers right, the Cray 2 achieved around 380 MFlops at full throttle, a Raspberry Pi 3 around 310 MFlops. I was thinking about putting 5 Raspies into that Wannabe-Cray, so this little project computer cluster would have blown the real thing stratight out off the water in numbers.

    Oh, I've once had been given 2 IBM PS/2's in the late 90s, they were even a bit older, with 2 DD floppy drives (720kB). A bit lower case, but wider. They had an 8088 CPU, and some ancient RAM modules which looked like the old SIMMs, but had pins instead of PCB contacts. Once, I turned one on and let it run, then slid a screwdriver over the RAM socket of one of the modules. It made a spark and the computer died. But when I turned it back on, it booted up without a problem!

    Don't throw it out! Find some vintage computer enthusiast who would like to have it and give it to them! There are lots of people who love this old hardware and take real good care of it! Last weekend, I was on the Vintage Computer Festival in Berlin, and there, they didn't have one of those! (But many C64's, Apple Lisa's and PDP8's, and lots more nice stuff like that, but also newer devices like the Apple Newton and more). But you would need to give all the passwords to the collector that takes it.

    I apreciate the video.
    I just love how these machines look. Even without the cover it just looks nice. And the whole modular system is pretty cool, definitely for that time.
    I used to own two of these, that I was given by some family friends. I eventually gave one to a friend, and put the other online for free. And a farmer came to pick one up. Saying he needed it for his machine that makes the numbering earrings for cows. His original one had died, and the replacement was too fast to run the software, so he was looking for a machine like this.
    I still have two Olivetti machines and two Highscreen pc's, one of which is the Highscreen Colani one, which has a special design to it. I also have a few Pentium 1 systems, but a lot of Pentium 2, and Pentium 3 machines that I have collected over the years. I plan on fixing them up and maybe upgrading them a little (I've managed to buy a lot of 512MB SDRAM sticks for cheap) and maybe sell them for a fair price or give away to people who want to play the games of their past on the original hardware once again.

    The "big" floppy drives at that time were 2.88 MB, used in some PS/2 models. It did not get momentum to gain much popularity. Fun to see how IBM got a lot of success with their original PC line, aping the Apple II concept of openly usable slots for anyone willing to make hardware. Apple went proprietary instead, and down they went. Then IBM switched to the improved but proprietary MCA bus, wanting others to pay licencing fees. Almost all said no to IBM, and down they went, with PS/2 only becoming the name of the keyboard/mouse ports IBM introduced.

    I've gotten my first PC in 1992, it was an AMD 386 DX-40 with 4MB of RAM and a 120MB HDD. A few years later I bought my first "build to order" PC, which was a Pentium 90MHz with 16MB RAM and a whopping 850MB Hard drive (which later died on me, because it was a Conner drive). After that, I built my first PC myself, which was a Celeron-A with 333MHz and 128MB RAM...Oh, those were old times...also, I was still suffering from being dumbed down by Microsoft GUIs that hide stuff from the user (although it only got really bad once I had become clean).

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1991 or 1992 I got a 386SX 33MHz 1Mb and 20MB HD got an extra 1MB soon after that.

    • @Seegalgalguntijak
      @Seegalgalguntijak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, it must have been 1993 for me - since it was my parents' old office pc that they gave me when they bought themselves a new 486 DX-40 (same megahertz, but 8MB RAM and 240MB HDD, so doubled everything else).

    Keep the old crap coming, we love that stuff. My first PC was an IBM XT that came from a cemetery, it had two 10 Meg hdd's, noisy as hell, I learned DOS on that thing and it served me well for many years. The thing I liked most about DOS 6.2 was the book that came with it, spiral bound and every command came with syntax and examples of how to use it. If Linux had the same thing for its command line I might consider switching.

      That was common in the good old days, even alla Unices/VMSes had a full library of manuals, I remember tons of valuable manuals about all aspects of the system for SunOS and Digital VMS, from assembly to all languages and behind. That was until the second half of 90s when paper manuals started to disappear. Not all that is for the bad: now we have more space and anyone can find manuals for free on the net about all hardwares and all softwares even, current and past. Not bad,at all for me.
