    Also note that IBM made an adapter for this purpose. I still have some from my days supporting PS/2s for my employer when I was in college. Just plug this little adapter into the PS/2 and plug a normal monitor into it. The IBM FRU is 96G2693.

    I always found it interesting how Windows 2.x/3.x, OS/2, and even the Common Desktop Environment on UNIX all basically shared the same user interface thanks to IBM's Common User Access specification. Supposedly that's where Alt+F4 for close and F1 for help came from. Can't wait for your take on OS/2 :)

    A more flexible solution is to modify an extension cable by removing the corresponding pin. That way, you can keep all your machines and monitors unmodified (if you happen to have more than one).

    I can't recall how many cables I had to go in with my needlenose pliers and small flat blade screwdriver to straighten bent pins. And not all were like these HD-15 video plugs, some people would just carelessly drop the cables, pins would get bent a little, then they would just jam the plugs onto the device and it was mangle city time! Always fun when the pins would bend over and short to another.
    Some of those HD-15S would be made one-piece, but some used an actual plastic insert to fill the missing pin gap. I was able to remove those in a few cases, or used a small drill bit to drill them out.

  • @wolf_hg
    @wolf_hg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I usually used a broken cable with all the pins still on it and jam it in there to make the hole. Doesn't always work tho, some cheaper and newer cables just ended up with the pin on the cable side pushed in the connector housing without making the hole.

  • @kirkmooneyham
    @kirkmooneyham 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That issue toward the end reminded me of how, in the old days, you'd try something that was a bit too far, and you'd get something stuck. Then it was a matter of figuring out how the heck to get everything reset back to defaults so you could try again. It could be frustrating at times, but I guess that was part of the "fun".

    I can´t wait for the OS/2 video(s). And, I used to cut the pin in the monitor connector instead making the hole in the VGA adapter. That way, I could use a monitor with any card. But that was when all my monitors were CRT. The last one was an Proview 17" beige CRT that was amazing for games as well for office tasks; it never tired my eyes.

    With all this stuff I’ve been hearing about most new cassette players using a bad cheap mechanism, what device would you recommend I get for making MP3 rips of cassette tapes? I have some story cassettes from my childhood that I’ve yet to see online uploads of.

    To go from interlaced to progressive, you have to half the refresh/frame rate, not double it. So 60hz interlaced would be 30hz progressive.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In this case the signal is 89.4 interlaced fields per second or 44.7 frames per second.

    • @kyle8952
      @kyle8952 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not true. To go from interlaced to progressive you have exactly the same field rate, you just exclusively send odd fields instead of alternating between odd/even. So in fact you are doubling frame rate.
      This is because the only thing that makes a video signal interlaced or not is the timing of the final video line. If the v sync pulse happens half way through the final line, then the next field will be vertically offset. The refresh rate and horizontal scanning rate are exactly the same, the monitor cannot tell the difference at all.

    • @Nabeelco
      @Nabeelco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vwestlife I think you said it backwards in the video. it was 44.7 interlaced fields which would make it effectively 22.35 frames a second, de-interlaced.

    • @Nabeelco
      @Nabeelco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kyle8952 To convert from interlaced to progressive, you merge the even and odd fields to form one full frame, effectively halving your field rate to your new frame rate.
      If you only sent the odd or even fields, you'd literally have half a picture with stripes running through it.
      So 60hz interlaced, would become 30fps progressively/non-interlaced.
      This is why everything in broadcast is recorded at either 60i or 30p.

      @vwestlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nabeelco No, I'm right. IBM used Hz to refer to the number of complete frames per second, not the number of interlaced fields per second. For example, their 8514/A graphics standard was 43.5 Hz which equals 87 interlaced fields per second: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_8514

Will try fire and paper clip before checking if this is some sort of scamware ( Windows) as my port was breaking wiggle ly. Thanks
