  • This video shows our stop at Juneau during our Alaska cruise in May 2023.
    We wanted to go and see the Mendenhall Glacier and possibly Nugget Falls, but didn't really like the idea of going on an excursion or paying at least $45 each just to catch the tourist bus from the cruise port.
    So instead, we decided to catch the local public transport system and make our way there and back using the public bus.
    We had done a little research beforehand and thought the bus would leave near the public library. As it happens when we got there, we asked in a little tourist information booth, and the nice lady pointed us toward the Downtown Transit Centre. The bus was already there and we only had to wait about 15minutes before it left.
    Amazingly the cost of using the bus was ONLY $2 EACH to get to Mendenhall!! (and the return journey is another $2 each).
    The bus was typical for a public bus, enough room and comfortable, and the trip only took around 40 minutes to get there.
    It's important to note that the bus doesn't go all the way to the visitor centre, so you will get dropped around 1.5miles away. The final walk though is very easy and along a nice flat road/path.
    One there you can either pay to go in the Visitor Centre (it's only $5 each) which gives you a pass for certain areas, but you COULD also walk in various places for FREE.
    The areas that you do need to pay for a pass for are:
    * The Pavillion
    * Photo Point Trail
    * Steep Creek
    * Restrooms
    * Bus Shelter
    * The visitor center
    We had a lovely walk around and then walked down to the Nugget Falls which is a great waterfall that you can get very close to.
    On the way back we timed it perfectly and arrived back at the bus stop at exactly the same time as the bus. The journey back into Juneau centre was as painless as before, and got us back in about 45 minutes.
    All in all, we had a fantastic day and would really recommend this method to get to the glacier and waterfall.

    Lived in Juneau for 3 years. Never made it to the waterfall from the bottom. But we did look down from the top after hiking through the rain forest. Hope you enjoyed it.

      We loved Juneau! It was a lovely place. We stopped there twice and on the other day we went for a walk up into one of the trails. That gave us another incredible memory where we came across a lovely black bear crossing the track. We made a video of that day as well (including the bear encounter)…

    Exactly what I planned to do. I hope the weather holds out for me too. I wasn't sure if the walking path is still there since the flooding in 2023.

    Also, if you don’t mind me asking, which camera are you using for video, we are scheduled on an Alaskan cruise next summer. Thinking I should get a video camera instead of just using my phone for video. Thank you.

    Great tip for the savings and the area to visit. Were you given a bus schedule to know when to be at the return bus stop? How long of a walk from drop off to the entrance of the park? Was the return bus pickup location the same as when you were dropped off? This is definitely a lot of savings. Thank you.

      We knew there was a bus at least every hour, so we didn’t fret too much about exactly what time we got back to the bus stop. We used Google Maps to check the journey and it actually has the bus times on it. It took us about 30 minutes or so to walk from the bus stop down to the visitor centre. It’s a nice scenic flat walk though. The bus picks up at the same place as the drop off point.

      @@BrainzIOW That’s good. We’re thinking to spend a good part of the time between going to the glacier and the falls. Agree, then no issues with one hour schedule. Thanks again and we do very much appreciate you both.

    This is amazing and just what I needed we will be there on 21st September, have a dog sled ride in the morning so hoping to do this in the afternoon. How often do the buses run?

    I'll be there mid-June, 2024. My ship will only be in Juneau from 7:00AM to 1:30PM, so I'm taking the ship excursion to save time. I believe that they will drop me off at the visitor's center, so it's only 1 mile walk to the falls. This should give me time to check out the Steep creek and Moraine Ecology trails.
    What time of year were you there?

    Great video thank you for sharing. The view during the walk looks amazing as well. We are planning to take the bus there but take a taxi back to the ship. Is it easy to call a taxi from the visitor centre? Thank you

    • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the positive comment. To be honest, I’m not sure how easy the taxi back would be, as we didn’t really look at that option. There does appear to be good infrastructure there, and it’s obviously geared up for tourists, so I would have thought it was easy enough, but don’t quote me on that :)

    Do you ask bus driver to alert you for the stop where you can walk to the visitor center? Do you pay $5 to get into the visitor center?

    • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We were using Google Maps on our phone so knew when we were approaching the correct stop, but despite that, the bus driver did indicate when we were there anyway. We didn't need to ask him, he just did it. You don't need to pay the $5 visitor pass unless you actually go into those designated areas. That doesn't include walking to the waterfall.

    Thanks for sharing your video. Really helps to see what it is really like as we plan our trip for next April. How much time did it take you from port to port? Our cruise itinerary shows we only have half a day leaving at 130pm, wondering if it's too tight in time to walk from port to town for bus and then walking to the glacier, walk to nuggets fall, and if time hike around a bit before we walk back to the bus in town and then bus to port. We are traveling with two kids but both are used to hiking so distance wise I think we are ok but just thinking if we even have enough time to enjoy the glacier. Also, do you know if it makes a difference taking the bus counter clockwise or clockwise?
    Thanks

    • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We were lucky in that we were docked all day, and didn’t leave until late in the evening. We probably would be more cautious having to get back for a 1:30pm departure. The buses go every hour, but if they are short staffed or other reasons, they apparently sometimes miss slots. Spot on time when we were there though.

    How long was the journey? How often does the bus run to and back from Mandenhall?

    • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @jl-kb4kp The actual bus journey took about 40-45min for us. The walk from the bus stop to the Visitor Centre took us about 25 minutes. You can see some good information here: juneaucapitaltransit.org/how-to-ride-to-the-mendenhall-glacier-visitor-center-with-capital-transit/

    • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It only takes about 15-20 minutes to walk from the visitor centre to the waterfall. It’s a good path that’s clearly signposted, so very easy to walk. Definitely well worth it. There is a good GPS and mobile phone signal, so no chance of getting lost :)
