  • Welcome back to another episode of Ask GMBN Tech, where we try to answer all of your complex, scary, niche, and technical questions about mountain bikes and MTB-related tech!
    ⏱️ Timestamps 👇
    0:00 - Intro
    00:35 - I have a late 90s Specialized Rockhopper with an original 63mm RockShox Jett T2 but lately I have been thinking on replacing it with a 100mm RockShox Recon. How much would in change the headtube angle?
    02:09 - What are the pros and cons of tire inserts? Asking for a trail bike with 29" 2.5 tires...
    03:54 - My RD-M8000 derailleur with a clutch is rattling too much on bumps. Shortened the chain, the spring looks still, strong but that rattling is so annoying that when I'm going down on serious bumps I'm thinking about my drivetrain falling apart instead of focusing on the trail. Any ideas?
    05:32 - I have SRAM GX and if I backpedal on the largest cog the chain slips down the cassette. This is especially annoying if restarting on a steep climb. Is this a chainline issue or is it something that I can fix? All other gears are absolutely fine. Thanks!
    06:49 - Do rotors/gyro systems (the thing that lets you spin your bar infinitely) decrease brake power, I am thinking of putting one on my enduro.
    07:31 - How much travel do you think I need for doing some proper big jumps and still have a bike that can climb?
    09:07 - I currently have a shock stroke of 60mm and I am thinking of going to a 62.5 or 65 mm shock stroke, I have heard over-stroking a bike isn't good but it hasn't really been said why so I am wondering what the downsides are of overstocking a bike is?

    I run CushCore. I went to the bike park and was hammering down the trail. I had stopped to dial in my front shock and put in some air, and the guy said, do you need your tires aired? I said yeah-sure. He started with the back tire and he said, dude you have 8psi. I said fill it up to 21psi. Then he checked the front tire, and said, dude you have 8psi in the front.
    It felt a little squirmy in the back but I really didn't notice. I basically was running flat on the CushCore. I weigh 215lbs dry.
    I love CushCore!

    @Leo_Inclan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Honestly, Cushcore is the best upgrade I've made on my trail bike (Meta TR). The improved cornering feel alone is worth every single gram and every single cent.

      What tyres do you use? I've noticed that even Schwalbe tyre with Super Trail casing don't need inserts whereas Maxxis often need some. Even the Double Down sidewalls are not supportive enough in certain cases. I gave up with Maxxis tyre, especially at rear.

    • @Leo_Inclan
      @Leo_Inclan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@francoisjoly7696Currently, Maxxis. I've been through other brands and I agree with you on the difference in support, but I don't think it's massive.
      I'm on the heavier side of body types, so that's definitely a factor as well.

    #AskGMBNTech Could you explain how the pros set their suspension differently for different tracks and conditions ? For examples berm vs rocks/roots, dry vs wet, lots of bikepark jumps vs more drops etc. What can us amateurs learn from that ?

    I have the same backpedaling-on-largest-cog derailment issue on my 2 bikes with 12x GX. If that happens, the chain will jump 2 or 4 gears down (up?). To get out of that situation without entangling the chain further, you have to click the shifter a few of times to match the gear in which the chain fell. Then move the bike forward a bit while moving the pedals forward with your hands and you're set.

    Backpedal 12s issue - check if freehub body is secured correctly, as it may come loose. Vastly improved the problem for me. Also check if cassette is not loose.

      It can actually also be hardware issue. I bought a brand new Spectral AL5 with Deore M6100 derailleur and Miranda Delta cranks and I couldn't do even half of rotation backwards without the chain dropping from cassette and chainring. After changing Miranda cranks to Deore M6120 I can backpedal for ages and nothing happens. From what I've heard SRAM is worse in that aspect than Shimano.

    #AskGMBNTech I currently have a bike with 175mm crank arms and getting a lot of pedal strikes and having issues with manuals, would going to shorter cranks help out? Thinking of 165mms would 10mm really affect anything, or is it too big of a jump in size?

    tried inserts. Found they mostly prevent the liquid tire sealant from sealing the rims. (The inserts take up most of the space, minimizing the sealants ability to slosh around and fix holes...)

    @askGMBNTech On a Down Hill bike, is that stupid front section of a seat (designed well over 110 years ago) actually necessary.
    All it does for me is get in the way when I want to tip the bike down in a slalom.
    (And since we're on the topic, do we actually need the steel spring rails under the seat that steal precious dropper space, and weight... well they're steel!)
    (I have an 2010 Giant Faith so I need every mm of space to barely get 100mm drop... Ooh for a double section dropper!)

    #AskGMBNTech I'm looking for a fork for my old 26" bike, but sadly, none of the big premium brands make 26" XC forks anymore. The only company still making decent looking forks that fit what I'm looking for are SR Suntour. Top-spec period-correct forks on the used market are pretty rare in my area and they sell for roughly the same price as a brand new entry-level SR Suntour. So which one should I get, a brand new entry-level fork or a used high-end fork?

      Are they bedded in? Thoroughly clean the caliper and rotors with IPA, change pads and remember to bed them in properly, SRAM has a video on YT showing how to do it. Spectral AL5 I presume? I bought mine 3 months ago and brakes are squeling a bit only in wet conditions.

      My early 90’s Rockhopper came with a Specialized branded fork with 63mm travel. I don’t think there was an 80mm fork at the time, they came next. So for the guy that asked the question about fork size, there was no real data then. A 100mm fork on an old Rockhopper would be nice and probably safe.

    #AskGMBNTech I am looking to purchase rim tape for my tubeless ready rims. My rims are 23mm wide, and the Muc-Off rim tape is only available to me in 21mm or 25mm. Same with other brands. Should I look for 23mm wide tape, or would I look for something slimmer like the 21mm to allow some space for the bead to seat properly. Also, can I use this rim tape with Inner tubes?

    • @BruceLeeX3
      @BruceLeeX3 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      25 should be good. 21 is too narrow.

      @el_kombajno_enduro9026 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You should always add 2-5 mm (depending on the rim size and depth) to the tape width so 25 mm is actually the recommended width for your rims. For 30mm rim it is usually 32-35mm, for 35mm rim - 40 mm tape, etc.

    #askGMBNTech Hey guys, thanks for the awesome content! A question: If you're a pro you have to wear and ride the gear you are given right? What does pro do if for example a helmet does not fit his head? I've seen this a lot with POC helmets that people wear because it looks cool but POC helmets tend to have a strange shape so the helmet often obviously doesn't fit. Or even worse: what if a pro is between sizes in sponsored bike frames?

    • @gmbntech
      @gmbntech  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! A lot of the time companies have the resources to make sure that their athlete has the right thing they need to represent them, be that an in between size helmet, or custom geo bike. It's not entirely unheard of for pros to turn down deals if they don't get along with the product.
