To me, the most impressive is the range up to lets say 60 or 70 on open road. The lack of drama on a Vmax to get insane acceleration without downshifting, without screaming engine, just pull the throttle and off it goes. While sitting upright totally relaxed on a sofa. That is definition of cool.
My very conservative lifetime friend bought a new V Max. The brutal excelleration stretched his arms so much that he now wears a pair of 40" Levis on them. He eventually switched to a new Harley....now, EVERYthing outruns him....including the local garbage truck!
I own a ZX10R and my dad has a heavily modified supercharged Vmax. Those Yamahas were the fastest street bike in their day. They have incredible low end torque and pull like a train out of hell, especially on track surface.

The VMAX dethroned the Honda V65 Magna. The V65 was a brutal sleeper, an absolute wolf in sheep's clothing. The VMAX looked more serious. It looked like it meant business and it positively did. I really loved that era of motorcycles.

As a long time drag race spectator, and rational person I can tell you that it's the viewing angle that makes you think the 14 was closing the gap fast, it wasn't. There was a .3 difference in their ET and the 3 mph on the top end was due to aero. Both fast bikes indeed, but not a close race.

It was a Very close race, the fact the Cobra kept up with the VMAX is what impressed me. An inside page showed the rear fender of max covered with burnt rubber. We were like, fuck yeah, a muscle bike!!! Didn't handle worth a shit they said, but in a straight line, massive torque Vmax !!!
I own a Vmax and a ZX-12. You would have to be asleep at the launch to let the Vmax get too far in front, and you would reel it in quickly. Both are super fun to ride.
Just like I've seen posted, I too own a Gen I Vmax and an '08 ZX-14, both of which have stock motors. I love the Vmax but yeah, there's no way in hell in stock form it's going to get away from the ZX-14. The modified Vmax in this video is hauling serious ass.

My bosses thought I was crazy for showing up post accident instead of getting medical attention. Yes, I still ride and stupid fast to boot. Current ride is a 2022 GSXR 750 with a full M4 exhaust, Sprint Air filter, and flashed my Chris Moore/Moore Mafia so it’s a beast. Of course I have steel braided brake lines, etc. My upgrades are too long to list. We ride to add life to our days, not days to our lives. If that’s not you, you are not a purist. Go get in you cage and drive to work. I’ll be the guy flying past you.
I had a 1994 1400 Suzuki Intruder, this is the spec for a 1400 Suzuki Intruder - 1/4 mile 13.30 sec. @ 97.93 mph. Top speed was about 98mph. I never claimed to have a great 1/4 bike, all I knew was, it got there quick. Then I saw the specs and realized the Intruder really did get there quick. Now, I’m under no delusions the Intruder is quicker than Ms. Max when being ridden by a professional, I feel sure the VMax is quicker. The VMax earned the right to be respected in the 1/4 mile.

That is not the first generation of the V-Max (1985) as the side panels on the bike are different and the Scoops are black and shaped differently. I had the first year they were made in 1985 the scoops and side panels were brushed aluminum and the name VMax was stamped in the medal in the side panels. She was a BEAST!
The V-Max put every other power cruiser out of business. It's insane that a really heavy shaft bike can run with dedicated sport bikes. A sport bike is the equivalent of sitting in the cockpit of a jet fighter. The V-Max is like sitting out on the nose. A whole different rush.
Comfortable its not! Brutal power, with a heavenly band playing music only a V4 can make. The old V-boost was downright frightening at first. 6000rpm VBoost was a kick in the arse. Felt like you were coming unglued from the seat. 0-45mph through a 4 line intersection, from redlight to the opposing stop line! . Power to keep you safe. Passing 7 cars at once on a 2 lane road full of traffick. Comfortable its not.
Blown hip & back. Had to sell. Maybe I can get a TMW 2 wheel front end... VMax. With the extra weight maybe blow the motor up to 300hp? Almost as quick as Tesla's 3 motor sport model at a 3rd the cost. And the V4 music Tesla cant duplicate.
That was what the V-Max was built for . Stoplight Derby's . The ZX-14 will wind out to a FAR higher top Speed , and Handle/Stop way better . Don't misunderstand , the VMX - 12 Engine is a Brutal Monster of an Engine , and ultra reliable . Just pointing out Real World things .
HAd a 92 Vmax for many years. Lots of fun. To dangerous on the roads anymore for my taste. I dont need to go fast like i used to. If i got another bike it would be another VMax all day. Im not into crotch rockets nor do i care to race.
Back in the early 90's, I had a Honda V-65 Magna. I used to wipe everything on the streets.....FJs, Seca 2s, CBRs, GSXR...to name a few. I could do 65 in 1st at redline on the rear tire, 90 at second and race over. Only one bike I never raced because I knew the outcome before the race......this bad ass bike right here. I had 125 hp, and these had 145+. Man I miss the musclebike era...
Pretty predictable results from a V Four vs an Inline Four. Given more distance the zx-14 would have revved out and the ram air would kick in and good bye VMax. That said for a 1/4 mile drag the VMax is the perfect set up.
Lets do a bit of math. The VMax is much heavier than the ZX14. The ZX14 has a bigger engine and possibly more HP than the Vmax. Unless the Vmax has been heavily modified, I can't see how it can keep up with the Kawasaki.
It's only 100 lbs. heavier, and VMAX not only has more horsepower but the difference in torque is even greater. It also depends on the gearing, wouldn't need to be modified to at least keep up, this might have a few bits but I heard these were running 9's from the factory. The ZX actually finished with a faster trap speed, he'd eventually catch the VMAX
@@randyfurness2415 That is a false statement. As a previous owner of a Gen 1 and current owner of a Gen 2 I can attest that there has most definitely been a huge mod to that motor to run that time. A Gen 2 cannot run that time stock.
Thats a Gen 1 and that could have a PCW 1500 long rod or something similar. Gen 2 can run those times without modification of motor internals with and ECU flash, exhaust and airbox mods. That rider launched like a boss.
In our ET Series, the quickest one is a VMax (best ET 9.02, with the shaft drive still in place and a bone stock engine with no power adders) followed by B-King and ZX10R. VMax kills it on the 60ft. despite being a heavy one...

I recall when this bike first came out, racers were getting killed left and right because no one was used to the kind of power that came out of that bike. Kawasaki was years later behind Yamaha
I raced a vmax (just for fun knowing what it was) and it was the first time my z900rs felt underpowered by the time he was shifting to 3rd he was already pulling ahead and I was not letting off at the next light he said he bought it to piss his wife off and then did a burnout and launched it again madman
@@miroslavconk4068 I can tell you my 85 vmax vith a stage 2 dyno jet kit and header as well as a racing air filter but thats not where it stops. I have the vboost set up to be on from idle instead of activating at 6000rpm its just more instant acceleration and Flickable.

Vmax in the video looks to have flatslide mikuni carbs rather than the stock ones.

It feels twice as quick as it did in the stock set up and I used to get 105 to the tank if I road it easy and now it drains a little more running to the mid 80s and that reserve comes on. I'm more happy with it because its more snappy it also sounds like a chevel ss when I idle down the street as more predictable. I don't have to wack it open to activate the vboost because I got it from the get go like you. Its also my first motorcycle and boy am I over my head🤣🤣🤣

They run a 10 stock with a good rider. Slap and exhaust, tune and just enough fuel for the run and its doable.

HAd a 92 Vmax for many years. Lots of fun. To dangerous on the roads anymore for my taste. I dont need to go fast like i used to. If i got another bike it would be another VMax all day. Im not into crotch rockets nor do i care to race.
Good race! Closest I've ridden to these is a V-star 1300 and a Z1000 (gen 2?). Those were plenty fast for my skill level.
If you switched riders, the outcome would've been the reverse! 🤷♂️👍
Back in the early 90's, I had a Honda V-65 Magna. I used to wipe everything on the streets.....FJs, Seca 2s, CBRs, GSXR...to name a few. I could do 65 in 1st at redline on the rear tire, 90 at second and race over. Only one bike I never raced because I knew the outcome before the race......this bad ass bike right here. I had 125 hp, and these had 145+. Man I miss the musclebike era...
Pretty predictable results from a V Four vs an Inline Four. Given more distance the zx-14 would have revved out and the ram air would kick in and good bye VMax. That said for a 1/4 mile drag the VMax is the perfect set up.

I love my Vmax but there is no way that is a stock Vmax
Lets do a bit of math. The VMax is much heavier than the ZX14. The ZX14 has a bigger engine and possibly more HP than the Vmax. Unless the Vmax has been heavily modified, I can't see how it can keep up with the Kawasaki.
It's only 100 lbs. heavier, and VMAX not only has more horsepower but the difference in torque is even greater. It also depends on the gearing, wouldn't need to be modified to at least keep up, this might have a few bits but I heard these were running 9's from the factory. The ZX actually finished with a faster trap speed, he'd eventually catch the VMAX
Max was cammed, timing degreed, and a host of other tricks. Probably kicken 220- 240 horses. Rider had it figured out as well.

There are serious mods to run a 9.1 on a Gen 1. Likely a CC upgrade for sure.
@@randyfurness2415 That is a false statement. As a previous owner of a Gen 1 and current owner of a Gen 2 I can attest that there has most definitely been a huge mod to that motor to run that time. A Gen 2 cannot run that time stock.

Thats a Gen 1 and that could have a PCW 1500 long rod or something similar. Gen 2 can run those times without modification of motor internals with and ECU flash, exhaust and airbox mods. That rider launched like a boss.

Vmax had a MUCH better start. The Ninja had a better top speed. Maybe the difference was the skills of the riders?
The impressive part is that is a Gen1 Vmax, 1200, and it ran a 9.1 at 144mph.
In our ET Series, the quickest one is a VMax (best ET 9.02, with the shaft drive still in place and a bone stock engine with no power adders) followed by B-King and ZX10R. VMax kills it on the 60ft. despite being a heavy one...

@@johnjones5977 Its what the timing system says. They shaved off a lot of weight, added 3" to the swingarm, modified the FI system and some small things more, but didn´t touch the engine itself. Also, the driver is just 150 lb. What is your best ET?

I recall when this bike first came out, racers were getting killed left and right because no one was used to the kind of power that came out of that bike. Kawasaki was years later behind Yamaha

I raced a vmax (just for fun knowing what it was) and it was the first time my z900rs felt underpowered by the time he was shifting to 3rd he was already pulling ahead and I was not letting off at the next light he said he bought it to piss his wife off and then did a burnout and launched it again madman

@@miroslavconk4068 I can tell you my 85 vmax vith a stage 2 dyno jet kit and header as well as a racing air filter but thats not where it stops. I have the vboost set up to be on from idle instead of activating at 6000rpm its just more instant acceleration and Flickable.
@@briankrasne3518 My '88 vmax has a stage one dynojet kit, laser pro stock racing mufflers, a K&N filter and a 3 position vboost switch, stock at 6000rpm, off to save fuel, or on from idle and when on from idle it is very interesting. Vmax in the video looks to have flatslide mikuni carbs rather than the stock ones.
@@vmax4steve524 lol I have my 85 set from idle so it's always on. It feels twice as quick as it did in the stock set up and I used to get 105 to the tank if I road it easy and now it drains a little more running to the mid 80s and that reserve comes on. I'm more happy with it because its more snappy it also sounds like a chevel ss when I idle down the street as more predictable. I don't have to wack it open to activate the vboost because I got it from the get go like you. Its also my first motorcycle and boy am I over my head🤣🤣🤣
