Setien is an admirer of Cruyff's methods. His Betis and Las Palmas teams answer the question "what will it look like if Pep Guardiola took over a mid-table team instead of Barcelona?"
Earl Indeed, good entertaining football but the material isnt good enough to get the results to match the football.
That's very true. IMO Setien's philosophy is probably the most intelligent way a team can get advantages from rules and the logic of the game, but he has to understand that professional football needs people more adaptable and the context rules. So if you have an squad that doesn't let you apply radically this idea of football, maybe you would have to negotiate this and try to get the best from your guys and your strengths in order to get results. Football is always above any coach's figure.

@@jjryan1352 we are conceding a lot this year, that's a fact but you are also forgetting how many defensive mistakes were covered for by Mats fine goal keeping and luck..against higher quality teams that doesn't work.
This style has got them picked apart few times this season, but it also got a deserved win agaisnt Real at the Bernsbeu.
Setien would be interesting to see at a big club which could really give him the players he needs. Arsenal maybe after Arsene? Dont think so but would be more than interesting.

Wow, I've been asking for this one for a really long time. Thanks for doing this, Real Betis, or rather Quique Setien, deserves a lot more attention than he is currently getting. If he spoke Italian I would recommend him for AC Milan. Low risk, high reward signing if it came to it. Love his style.

Great choice of team to cover more like. Setien is arguably the coach of the season in La Liga with his transformation of
Real Betis over the season.
The mentality is what Setien lacks. I love him as a tactical coach. He really tried his best to make Suarez, Messi, and Griez work together on the pitch. I just feel like coaching Barcelona is too big of a job for him and he didn't have the support of the dressing room. I'm still mad at the 8-2 but I truly believe that If he has a squad that Ronald Koeman has now. Tactically speaking, He would be doing so much better, but then Koeman has the authority, he has control over the dressing room. I honestly don't know which one is better. A coach with Koeman personality and Setien great mind would be the best for us.
And now he has been sacked, after pressure from fans and media. They lost "everything" in a horrendous week, both the quarter final of Europa League and semi final of Copa del Rey. That hit them hard, going on to lose some important league matches towards the end of the season, finishing just 3 points below qualification to Europa League.
But they did end the season beating Real Madrid 0-2 at Santiago Bernabeu. They also beat Barcelona 3-4 at Camp Nou and AC Milan 1-2 at San Siro. If only the fans and the club had been patient and invested in the long term, recognising what Setien was building here, I think this could have become a new great era for Betis. You don't know what you've got untill it's gone.
It will be interesting to see which teams will want Setien's service after these two years at Betis.

Hi everyone, I'd like to share my opinion about Quique Setien and his football philosophy as a Betis fan. After some terrible years with awful managers (such as Poyet or Del Amo), we can eventually enjoy a good and professional coach. I like how my team plays football, although everything is not as nice as you can imagine watching this video.
Betis have passed throughout a very bad part of the season after an amazing start of the league, with even a victory against Real Madrid in their own stadium. Most of the teams after the 10 first weeks of the season have learnt how they can block Setien's gameplay (for instance: Eibar, Getafe, Girona, Las Palmas...), making Betis lose some essential points for our final target in this season. The very-high preassure of the rivals, the terrible mistakes defending foults and corners, and the injuries of our best defenders, such as Feddal or Javi Garcia, made the team let the rival to score too many goals. Besides, he denies to change his ideas in some matches, where perhaps the team should have rejected ball possession and should have considered counter-attacks.
The result: 2 months without a win, even losing against Cadiz in Copa del rey 3-5 (a team which belongs to second division).
It seems that recently Setien has been able to "reset" the team and it has re-started to play more propperly. I rely on him, and I think that in long-term we will achieve good things with Setien.
To sum up, I reckon he is a good coach and a good communicator to his players, with a very beautiful idea of football, although sometimes these ideas make our team lose some key points. Although, of course, this philosophy is much more reliable with a team like Barcelona with Guardiola than Setien's Betis (a humble team compared to the big ones).

Josekh10 I believe slightly differently. Setien has a good system, but aspects of it are too predictable. For example, his full back will always stick close to the sidelines, maintaining the width and drive up the width of the pitch. Only on a counterattack or when they have no other options available will they deviate from this. That means that full backs can only overlap to the outside of other players on their team. Other patterns of play that allow more variation to the play would help make them less easy to read. For example, fullback does an inside overlap while winger maintains width. Or fullback drives toward the box releasing winger to carry the ball up and cut the ball back into the box. Or fullback pushes centrally to pack the midfield and create a compact overload. These are all things that Guardiola has added to his teams over the years to keep the opposition on their toes. Possession is great, but possession in dangerous areas is what causes the damage. Possession where we pass between defense and midfield is how a team gets screwed on mistakes. And creating these different types of overloads is what allows ball progression into dangerous areas.

Betis just beat Barcelona at their home and as a Barça fan I think there is no shame in losing to such team which can play very high level of football without any famous star.

I think he will be a massive success with Barça. Wacth the Real Betis game vs Madrid, it was beautiful how they created and kept possession.
His style isn't manic or intense like Guardiola, but it has the same DNA. It's a bit slower and the players seems to glide better within the lines, which will be very good for the Barça ageing players. It resembles how Ajax played with De Jong.
De Jong and Messi will love him and I'm sure he'll know how to get the best out of Griezmann. The man is a real tactician, he knows football.
What it will do is create a template that won't be 100% on Messi. Everyone had to adapt to Messi, but with this system, even Messi will have to adapt to it. And that's a good thing for everyone 🙏

So eager to watch the whole new versions of Firpo, Wague and Griezmann. But, above all I'm so excited and curious to see where and how will Messi play under him cuz for last 2 managers it has been a bit controversial of letting him play rw and slowly shift to CAM. We only have one proper winger who is Dembele so either we'll buy new winger to which I prefer selling Suarez and coutinho in according to buy Neymar back. Good times ahead hopefully.
This guy brought a normally bottom half team into top 10 with Barca-like tactics. He'll do well with actual Barcelona players. How successful he'll be is up for debate. I find managers who don't usually handle world-class egos tend to suffer when they're at a top club.

@@ugwuaduchukwunonso3539 Lol he absolutely should olay there Setien wants wingers with workrate not Messi on the wing. Also a real 9 limits his touches which is unlike Griezmann. Griezmann is more than capable of playing behind defense on the wing and sometimes make the 9 runs a la Villa. The problem with MSG is that Suarez recieves the balls and doest track back while Griezmann was more ignored even he made the proper runs movements off the ball using his speed and giving a good option behind defense to Messi. Now that Suares is hurt, Griezmann will 100% get more balls and with a good collective football, he will be heavily involved in build up play. Hes not a Coutinho. He has the speed and forward instinct to finish his chances. Trust me, Griezmann CAN play on the left if Messi is CF and thrive like Villas did in that exact same role.
Quique would be immense at Barca, given the right midfielders he could bring so much success
